I often find myself having to make 2 trips to the post office. The first to get
a quote for the packed item, and the second to actually ship the item. The lady
at the post office said it was the only 'reliable' way.

Is there a fool-proof on-line tool that provides a correct quote for shipping,
based on weight of box and dimensions?

Do I need to invest in a desktop scale as well?

The USPS website has a Calculate a Price feature. But it only gives you the retail
rates for First Class shipping. You should be using Pirate Ship or Shipstation
(thru paypal) to get commercial rates.

You need a scale and a way to print postage purchased online. Absolutely.

Good luck,
Jen

Definitely get yourself a postal scale. It will greatly increase your efficiency
-- you will be able to pick, pack, and print your own shipping label in minutes
and even get orders out the door all on the same day.

Plus, the third-party online postage vendors offer significantly discounted shipping
rates versus what you will pay to buy postage at the post office. Even USPS
dot com Click-N-Ship is less expensive that postage bought at the post office.

Royal DS10 shipping scale: $20-$35
or Trips to the Post Office with gas at $4+ a gallon...
Makes sense after about a dozen trips...

I bought a small Dymo digital postal scale at Target, it was less than $30 I
think and has worked well for me so far.

Kitchen scales are cheap, and a ruler will cost you around twenty cents.
