So I got in a bulk shipment yesterday, and as I was sorting through them, a lot
of them felt like "Fego" aka Fake Lego. Usually I'm pretty good at either
seeing or feeling the difference almost immediately, but these threw me off.
They don't feel like LEGO, but they say LEGO, but I can't find any regular
LEGO numbers on them...

anyone else had this recently??

If they have the LEGO logo or copyright symbol on them, then they are almost
certainly genuine. Perhaps they are simply older bricks, which have a slightly
different look and feel to them (and often don't have mold numbers). You
could also post some pictures here and see what the other members think.

Yet to find any fake Lego with Lego logo, sounds fine to me.

Most likely older LEGO.

Maybe post pictures for us to see, as Stuart said, have yet to find any Fego
with LEGO logo.

Pics would be nice. But maybe they are warn out lego or even some of the original
patten lego. Those had a more vintage lego print then what it is today.

I got a batch of wide treads (part 42479) on Bricklink that do have the LEGO
logo on them, but are definitely fake (see picture - real on left). They are
shiny, not matte. I have the same part from a kit I bought at Legoland, and they
look totally different. I'd really like to know what to do next; should I
contact the vendor about it? Report it to someone on Bricklink? Post about it
and identify the vendor for everyone to see? This is my very first post on Bricklink,
so any guidance is much appreciated!

I’ve never seen fake Lego / alternative brand with Lego logo.

I've been collecting/buying Lego for the past 20 years and I sometimes see
such differences between seemingly 'identical' parts. It could be mold
wear, but most likely parts made at various plants, and the molds do not always
have the same 'finish'. Also, in the past many parts were shiny, but
it seems lately Lego has switched to more 'matte' parts are those more
robust to scratches.

Thank you so much for your very helpful response! I'm new to this, and I'm
embarrassed to have made such a bold, incorrect, claim. Is there any place, like
a website or book, that I can go to educate myself? I am interested only in LEGO
Technics right now.

Yes, that's the consensus. Sorry for making such an uninformed claim.
Any advice on where I could go to figure this stuff out?

Thanks,

If the logo is on them, they're real (the converse is not true, of course).
But:

- they could be cellulose acetate (CA) - old bricks
- they could be Samsonite (Samsonite made Lego bricks under license and they
used the "open O" logo on them - sometimes you'll see bricks with upside-down
or sideways logos on the studs)
- they could be one of the newer plastics used by TLG

Fascinating! Thank you so much for your highly informative response. I'm

Generally speaking the BrickLink forum is the best place (and I don't say
that in jest!) at least once you put Sylvain on your ignore list (OK, that part
*is* a joke)

anyone else had this recently??

Many people are saying they are older lego, but it's also quite possible
they are newer lego. Many pieces have had their material switched lately and
I have noticed a different feel to them. Particularly transparent parts like
windscreens, which now feel more flexible and rubbery than they did in the past.

As most have said though, if it says "LEGO" on it, it's almost certainly
lego. The only thing to be cautious with that is printed pieces for very rare
parts like torsos. Those can sometimes be custom prints (whether completely
custom or copies of rare printings) on official lego.

For the transparent parts, we know (= certainty) that LEGO switched from PC to
MABS/transparent-ABS.  And the first tests were cloudy.

For the others, well, LEGO is always testing & changing the ABS formulas.  And
they can do dual-molding very well now, and not only for colours: they do it
for the towballs.
