I wasn't here when Dan was still alive, but I feel the same way. I am so
happy for what he created and how it allows all of the varied AFOLs of the world
to come together and interact.

Hot take.
I like the name bricklink better than brickbay
(Although the website was made before I was born so I wasn’t there when it was
a thing)

I've long held thoughts on this which I'll keep to myself, other than
to say that some pushback would've been in order. The site in question from
early on, often acts as a bully. But as with most bullies, when you respond in
kind with your own attorney and the threat of litigation, they quickly cave.

These types of entities typically use the one page letter in shotgun fashion,
either from their legal department or law firm on retainer, to handle and quash
any perceived encroachments on their business. It’s unfortunately effective on
the little guy or small business. Never did see legal redress eBay imagined they
might’ve had with the name use.

A little later all shops with Lego in their name had to change their store names.

I remember the debates on whether it should be extended to include usernames
too. Glad it wasn't further pushed, though. Wouldn't you agree, legoman77

We were allow to keep our personal names used here, but store names did not allow
Lego. I tried Leg0 and LeGo and Leggo, all rejected. So for ebay I settled
on Billundbricks77.

eBay has NO right to the words Auction Bay! That has been around for centuries!
So if you want to have a company with the word Bay in it, it's perfectly
allowed and the judge would just laugh and throw out the case. And hopefully
the judge would make ebay pay for the other's legal fees and compensation
for inconvenience! They were just jealous of losing money to another website!

Problem in those cases is the cost to defend yourself.

So when eBay sends you a Registered mail from their lawyers, you may back up
and don't take this risk. IMHO - I don't know much about this, just this
story about the BrickLink name.

BTW - to reply to the original Post:

Dan has made (at least) one great thing, is remembered by many people - and that
what counts when you're not here anymore.

Bravo and thank you Dan!

When this all went down I was wondering if eBay asked San Fransisco Bay to change
their name.

Yes, as a matter of fact, eBay even filed a lawsuit against San Francisco Bay.
However, the case was waved by the court.

I prefer the name bricklink to brickbay anyway.

I wonder how many erroneous hits Dan Bricklin's website has received over
the years due to the site name. I think I visit it once every few months.

Years ago, I was a big user of Brickset and Peeron. Years ago...

I am here for more than 12 years now (and I hope for a long time !), and I try
to be the nicer and most useful I can...
As everyone here, I know how big was the work done here to make this website
; And how big the work is currently to make it perfect.

Thank you Dan !!

And a big THANK too to everyone who keeps it running!

Sincerely,

Nicolas

I did not realized that today was the day of his death. I came along in 2016,
but I am very thankful for his vision here. It's a sad week all around for
us. Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary that our dear friend Ethan Lakey
died at age 16. He worked for us in fulfilling orders for several months, and
rarely made any mistake.

We miss you, Dan! And as Cory said, Warm thoughts to your mom, Eliska!

You actually knew and remember him when he started the site, didn't you?
I believe you helped him beta test features in the beginning, too.

That's right. Dan floated the idea on Lugnet and, to tell you the truth,
I didn't really think it would succeed, but I'm so glad it did!
