I'm considering buying a number of these parts organizers from Harbor Freight
this weekend and wanted to know what experience other Lego collectors and sellers
have had with this product.

Thanks

Hi,

(Look very much like the drawers I got at Lidl for €10 )

They are good for storing vertically.
But the problems I have with them are:
1. you have to open multiple drawers to find what you’re looking for,
but that is solvable with a label on each drawer (picture for building, number/code
if you’re picking for an order),
2. you need to open one drawer per lot (or a bit less if you use separators),
3. overflowing is difficult to handle (one size doesn’t fit all).

If you have the room / possibility, storing ‘horizontally’ is better: big (shallow)
drawers with compartments or cups.
You open a drawer, you see all the parts and can pick similar parts that are
in the same drawer but different compartments/cups.

But you shoudln't use them in Australia, the drawers would be upside down
and the parts would fell on the ceiling

Can't you just install them upside-down?

Nah, everything is special down there: with magnets or antigraviton or something…
that’s complicated.
But that’s why everything is so expensive there.

Of course in Australia you will find at least 2 poisonous spiders in each drawer.

Yeah, but at least they don’t have rattlesnakes!

(Hmm, sad, I can’t find that old story any more….  Well, those who know it will
understand the reference )

Thanks. My storage space is extremely limited (a 25" x 24" area under my work
table.

Harbor Freight sent me a coupon I can use once per day for 3 days, which would
get me 3 of these for around $42. That would give me 120 drawers. I have some
bins I can use for larger pieces, overflow. Ultimately, I hope to get 5 more
that I can mount, along with these 3, to the inside of 4 rolling carts I'm
going to build.

Okay, so about 64cm x 60cm.
But is that the ‘front face’ or the surface?  (Standard work tables are around
70cm (27in) high or more.)

Hmm, I don’t really see how you’ll fit the 8 under your table….

For info, mine are 41.3cm (16.3in) high and 30.2cm (11.9in) wide and 13.5cm (5.3in)
deep.
The inside of each small drawer is about 8 x 14 studs (& 4 studs high).
Other brands have very similar sizes.

As for ‘fitness’ for storing your LEGO, it also all depends on how many parts
you have and what type they are.

I’ve 13 such cabinets… but that’s only for about a third of my ‘free’ parts,
so around 40k small parts.
My unmodified bricks, plates, tiles and other bigger parts (windscreens, big
tyres…) are in other, bigger, drawers.
All that’s taking a space of 3m (10ft) long and 1.6m (5.3ft) high.
But then, I like to have my parts well sorted for building.  (OCD?  Nah…)

The measurements I gave are the height of the space under the desk (it's
one I made myself using a door and a 2-drawer file cabinet) and the width of
that space.

Basically the rolling cart would have the 5 1/2" side of the cabinets facing
forward, with 2 cabinets side by side per cart. Think of it as a dolly with
walls on 2 5 1/2" sides, a top, and slats on the open back to allow the cabinets
to be mounted securely.

I've just started collecting, so what I have currently are mostly small parts.
So that's not a problem.

Drawer dividers are great for small parts and help maximize your space. Harbor
Freight does not have official ones, but you could explore DIY options. I also
use freezer/slider ziplocs in shoeboxes for larger parts and minifigures.

Nothing's rarely good for life.

Just find the appropriate one _for now_ (and fine if it's not expensive),
then later on, based on your environment, use, habits, preferences - whatever,
then maybe you'll keep this or upgrade to something else, etc.

When it comes to drawers you will be sliding in and out frequently do not go
cheap. I tried one of these years ago and each drawer stuck and slid like trash.

Personally I'd recommend going super cheap zip lock bags first and using
your profits to buy decent drawer units.

Hmm, those work well for me.  I’ve some that were more expensive (metal case)
and that are worse.

But that’s also good advice.

Test and ponder before going all with one solution.

Thanks. I had considered that, then I either read or heard that the baggies
option wasn't the way to go because pieces could be damaged. If that's
not the case, then I guess I need to consider it again.

Well, it depends if you have big bags where parts can move and rub together and
that you manipulate often or if you have well-sized bags that protect parts

Opening/closing the bags can be a pain too.

There’s many pros & cons for every solution and many parameters (quantities,
your usage, price…).

Sometimes you find a good solution… and 6 months later there’s a small annoying
detail you can’t stand any more and you change everything for a ‘better’ solution

Honestly I feel like the bigger investment was all the time I spent labeling
the drawers haha. But yeah it was definitely worth it for the efficiency increase.

Nice, I've been eyeing these myself for a long time but haven't taken
the plunge yet.

I see you have them stacked 4 high and it doesn't look like they're bolted
to the wall. How do you keep them from tipping over?

They are bolted. It's a wall I built with them on each side. Here are some
more pictures. You can see the part I built on the edge.

They are nice I'd recommend them. Some came broken from shipping and I had
to exchange them in store.
