Hello everyone,

I'd like some insight on Canada Post tracking from sellers/buyers, especially
those located in Canada. I always ship orders registered, which includes tracking.
It feels safer, to be able to track the order, so I don't offer any other
way of shipping, and because I don't have a lot of orders, usually I follow
them until they are delivered.

I've had by now about 20 international orders, from more than 10 different
countries. Every time, when the orders reach the country of destination, I can
track them on the local post office tracking site, except for Canada. I had 4
orders from there, and every time, if it wasn't for the buyer's feedback
I wouldn't even know that it reached the country let alone be delivered!
Which is kind of the point of shipping registered...

Is there another way to track orders after they reach Canada?

Thanks
Chris

Let’s just say Canada post and tracking aren’t best friends Canada post dosnt
like to offer tracking on most shipments so maybe the ones you send only have
partial tracking and stop getting tracked once they arrive in Canada or Canada
post just dosnt scan them. A decent amount of my tracking numbers are still scanned
as out for delivery and never actually get a delivery scan (although that might
just me my local Canada post employee) so they might not be the most consistent
with tracking either.
(Or perhaps tracking with a website like 17track)

We have the same problem, and not just with Canada. For what I gathered, the
problem seems to be a lack of a full cooperation or disagreement if you will
(I bet it is a money issue) between Sender's National Post and Receiver's
National Post.

Canada Post still scan the packages, but instead of publicly releasing the info,
they will withhold it. In order to retrieve that information you will have to
either ask your Buyer or file a complaint in your local Post Office.

There's no much you can do about it, except using Private Couriers when you
see fit. These, of course, update the tracking info at every stop.

  Chris

On another topic. Purple Overdose were (are?) a kind of Retro Psychedelic / Post
Neo Progressive band. Loved the Indigo album and some. (Loved Allison too, another
greek band from the 90s). Are you Christophoros, their drummer, aka Chris Silver,
by any chance?

It just seems a bit weird that after it's been sent for dispatch abroad,
the tracking number is dead. It also seems a bit unfair, after all, my customer
paid for tracking! And, even though I didn't have any problems so far, I
was wondering what proof can I use for delivery if needed? It kind of beats the
purpose...

Unfortunately I've got no connection to the band, I just love them! Their
older sound in exit#4 and indigo, and their newer sound in Reborn! Although I'm
more into metal, this is one of my favorite bands. It's amazing that you
know them, even in greece they're not that famous!!!

Sadly Costas Constantinou passed on May 2020, so there's no more Purple Overdose!

Have you tried going to the Canada Post web site and entering the tracking #
there? I recently found that USPS will track when a package enters Canada and
when it's delivered, but not WHERE it is in Canada; but when I used Canada
Post to track, all that information was available.

Yes, once it reaches the country of destination, I always check their post agency's
website until I see it delivered. Canada Post says "item not found" which for
the current order might be true if it hasn't reached Canada yet. But this
happened in all orders. After leaving greece the tracking number did not update
any more, even when delivered...

I'm wondering whether the tracking number is getting changed once the package
leaves Greece? When I send a package internationally from the US I get an international
tracking number (e.g. LZnnnnnnnnnUS where n is a digit 0-9).

I don't have a problem with other countries though, I just use their site
with the same tracking number. USPS, PostNord, South Korea, all worked fine...
It might be what Give.Me.A.Brick said about postal services cooperation, or the
lack of it...

It might be what Give.Me.A.Brick said about postal services cooperation, or the

Believe me, it is what I described. I've been dealing with this issue for
several years now and I see some countries going on and off on the cooperation
thing.

For instance, I had this issue with New Zealand through 2021 and from January
2022 on, Portuguese Post made mends with New Zealand Post and now the tracking
info updates just fine.

If you happen to talk with someone deep inside Greek Post Office (I talked with
over 20 inside people on the matter), someone who really knows what he/she's
talking about, and trusts you, they will lay out for you what the issue really
is.

You may have not noticed yet, but I do believe you have this same issue with
a couple of other countries too.

It seems weird. It is weird and upsetting. Greek Post will blame Canada Post.
Canada Post won't answer you or will redirect you to Greek Post. Been there,
done that.

Here you have 3 solutions:

1. If you have a priority option, it comes with a tracking number. It is actually
cheaper, because it doesn't include the small insurance of 30DTS + what you
paid for shipping. (Raw numbers, you mileage may vary.)

The good news is that Canada Post will update this tracking number online!

2. Private Courier

3. After 1 month of your shipment, if you didn't get any feedback from your
Buyer, file a complaint on your local PO, just in case. You will get a reply
variyng from 1 to 3 months, but at least you will have a proof that your package
was delivered.

And since we are here, one more question.

It seems that an order I sent to Spain, is being returned "due to lack of necessary
customs documentation"... What did I miss? Why would an item go through customs
in the union?

Yep.  The Canary Islands are special.  They have different customs rules (and,
if it’s like French ultramarine territories/départements, different VAT rules),
even when sending from mainland Spain.

Well, in the meantime, they have the right to play with LEGO… or maybe they buy
bricks to build a seawall?  (Yeah, not really funny….)

Here’s info on this mess¹:

(¹ I mean, some are in, others are out, and all the shades in-between.)

Everytime you have someone from one of these, you need to check the postal and
customs rules.
(There’s a summary table in the WP article about two thirds down.)

Thank you very very much!

I'll have to bookmark that wikipedia page, resend the order when it comes
back and prepare an apology for a lego lover who is apparently outside the EU

Whenever you see Island in the address always check if special shipping rules
apply.

In Spain for Canary Islands and Ceuta and Melilla you need to send as if it was
an order to outside of Europe (invoice copies and content description etc.).
For the Balearian Islands sending with the postal system is okay, but private
couries could have additional charges.

Thanks
Chris

Those you sent are "registered letter" and the tracking number starts always
with "R" (I believe). The difference "letter" and "registered letter" is this:
- you get partial tracking that only works when the parcel is in your country.
- CanadaPost knows when and where the package was delivered but they won't
offer any tracking.
- you get little insurance. (does this work? I don't know) For example, with
Deutche Post in Germany, you can pay extra 4 euro (19.89 instead of 15.89 Euro)
and only get partial tracking plus 50 Euro insurance.

In my opinion, it is not worth it. If a buyer opens a PayPal claim, you lose
anyway. CanadaPost is very reliable so I would just charge 1-2 euro extra and
ship letter, instead of registered letter. If the value of order is high, then
you may want to ship as Package to get full tracking.
