| I'd like to hear peoples thoughts or policies about selling to brand new
accounts, especially ones who created the account that same day. We currently
don't have instant check out because we send a quote for the shipping before
payment.
I have had a couple of accounts attempt purchase the same day they created the
account and then canceled the order the same day they ordered it.

My thoughts on this issue are few. I have sold to many a zero-feedback buyer
without issue.
That being said, I only use instant checkout, so buyers must pay when they place
the order. If you are concerned about cancellation, then I recommend you do
the same. In your store settings, it is possible to enforce instant checkout
for new buyers, while simultaneously allowing experienced buyers to request an
invoice.

Thank you for the feedback! One follow up question; with instant check out on
purchases how do you calculate the shipping, since each set/box is a different
size?

You don't. Sometimes you overcharge and sometimes you undercharge, but as
long as the buyer can see the total cost before placing an order, it doesn't
really matter. Personally, I use a simplified rate chart based on USPS prices.

You make sure you set up your shipping bands to take account of sizes and volumes.

I currently have only instant checkout for new buyers but I've enabled manual
methods in the past. I think only one buyer used it, and after confirming that
the buyer didn't want the order any more, I wound up cancelling the order.
Frankly I think most if not all new buyers aren't interested in manual invoices,
they just want to order their items, pay for them, and receive them in the mail.
This shouldn't be surprising since it's the way 99.9% (or more?) of online
shopping works.

| I've only been selling for two months, but about 10 of those orders have
been to customers with 0 ratings and so far I've had no issues. The only
one that made me nervous was an order with some expensive parts and so I purchased
insurance (at my own expense) just for peace of mind.
They do make me a little nervous because some might not understand how disruptive
a negative review might be and not completely understand BL policy, but at the
same time... we all at one point made our first purchase.

I have only two purchases from my store, both from new accounts. And there were
no issues. Genuine buyers. Maybe I was lucky, maybe people are not bad after
all.
If you have PayPal seller protection, and follow the rules and use common sense,
you should be fine.

| When I started selling (modest shop about 200k parts but some very in demand
stuff), I got an order (about 300EUR) from a new account
I wasn't comfortable with that (high risk country to boot) so I messaged
the buyer that I was going to cancel it
I got another order, for the same parts, right after from different BL member
with a high BL feedback score (in the same country), so I shipped the parts
All went well, and I apologized to the initial buyer
Cheers,
Ole

| I lurked on bricklink for two years before creating an account. I only registered
because I wanted to buy something. Because I didn't reply to an email within
2 hours at 3:30 am, my order was canceled.

| On a side note, of all the orders I've received on BrickLink, more than 1/8
of them have been a user's first order. I'm pretty happy with that number.

I have had only 2/100+ orders not go through. Both were from same day accounts
and both were over seas - I think they just misjudged shipping cost. And I have
had a lot, maybe most, of my buyers are fairly new (no minimum buy probably helps).
HOWEVER...
I got a second order today that was a new buyer/seller under construction who
placed a massive order over 700 individual pieces, cleared out a bunch of specialty
stock. Yes I am here to sell but this buyer is setting up a store and decimating
mine and at least one other store (had one review). I price at or slightly above
average sales, so I don't think I was priced too low, and they bought everything
not just the low priced ones. But my variety has been affected, and it doesn't
feel good.
I joined Bricklink thinking that it was a community helping each other build
and earn a little money to fund my own builds, not this - possibly "gaming the
system" to manipulate prices. Is this the direction Bricklink is going? Or
is there a way to minimize this situation at least from stores less than a year
old or under a minimum inventory.
Thoughts?

There are also many people on here who sell lego for a living (myself included)
and some people even have employees so I wouldn't say its meant entirely
for a bit of side money although many sellers on here do it as a hobby so we
are always buying and reselling as that's how it goes on a marketplace. But
I can confirm that not everything I buy as a store is for resale, sometimes I
buy things for my personal collection when shopping at other stores which could
have been the case this time
(not hating just pointing out several different possibilities)

My first order from a buyer with 7 feedbacks. That's ok. But his order was
$439. He asked photos of the used set and its box. The communication was great
and he left me this feedback, I think to support my store:
Exceptionally packed. Great customer service. Fair prices! What more can I say?
I don't have instant checkout. I have some off-dated shipping rates and I
allow "quote request" and I made it clear that if buyers wants to know shipping
costs before ordering, they have to submit a quote request through the system.
I don't get that many cancelled orders. But you wrote
"...and then canceled the order the same day they ordered it."
Buyers CANNOT cancel the order. If a buyer do not pay or submit a cancelling
request, I submit an NPB (non-paying buyer) and COMPELTE it. It takes 5 to 12
days but they will get an NPB strike, they cannot leave any feedback for the
transaction and I will leave a negative feedback (occasionally neutral FB) and
I stoplist them.
I do this to make sure they do not do the same behavior with other sellers. Once
they get 3 NPB strikes, their buying privilege will be terminated.
In some cases, specially with well established buyers, I may accept to cancel
their order but I first request them to submit a positive feedback by saying
"I took time to give you a shipping quote... and it is not my fault that you
want to cancel and I can cancel it if you don't mind to submit a positive
feedback for this transaction..."
I request them to submit a positive feedback so that they don't leave a neutral
feedback later because some buyers don't know that a neutral feedback is
considered a negative one on BL. The other reason is that I want them to work
a little bit extra so that when they make sure before submitting an order from
other sellers.
