For the last several months, the user Bill_FM has published, unpublished, and
republished their MOCs in order to manipulate the "popular" page. For example
their Lamborghini was just "published" yesterday, yet has comments dating back
to May. That same MOC is also not even their own creation. It is the work of
the user Alex_Qwerty that Bill_FM recolored and called their own. At one point
they credited the original designer in the description, but that has been removed
in the current iteration.

My question is if publishing, unpublishing, and republishing the same MOCs multiple
times in order to garner likes and remain on the default popular page an acceptable
practice? Or is it more appropriate to allow users to see new models from many
different designers instead of the same 3-4 MOCs from a single user?

Hi, I forwarded to the admins in charge of the Gallery.  They’ll look into it.
And something may be done to prevent the gaming of the popular page….

For copyright infrigements, as explained in section 25 of the ToS, the official
way is for the author/right-holder to contact customersupport@bricklink.com …
but you may also report the member through the Problem Center (link at the bottom
of every page) with links to the infringed & infringing designs: https://www.bricklink.com/problemMember.asp
.

Thank you! There are a couple other users doing similar unpublish/republish tricks
too. It just seems manipulative to me.

Yes, it is.  And all that to have their 15min vainglory on the Studio Gallery.
I hope the devs will quickly find a simple block for that.

This up and down republishing activity was done ostensibly to deal with a bad
actor in the Gallery who was targeting members and their designs.

Before we developed tools to handle the abusive behavior, some members would
unpublish their designs as a way to prevent the bad actor from hitting their
model comments during the hours when the BrickLink office was closed. They would
then republish when it was "safe" and content could be reported and taken down
immediately.

Is this the only user that has been republishing designs recently?

Okay, so that makes sense that the design are still ‘popular.’

Seems not: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1357765

Corkyscrewloop seems to be doing the same thing. You mentioned that tools were
developed to prevent the bad actor from hitting the comment section. Does this
mean that unpublishing/republishing designs is now an obsolete way of handling
this issue and shouldn't be done anymore? Even if it it is done in a non-malicious
way, the end result still seems like a good way to game the system.

Are any mods going to do anything about this? He's unpublished/republished
3-4 MOCs again since this thread was started. This has nothing to do with keeping
people from commenting.

Hmm, I've also noticed that if I un-like and then re-like my own designs,
it can manipulate the "popular" page as well; or at least bump the design
in the Gallery to the top (if the are being sorted by "Recently Liked".) Is
this considered an acceptable practice? I only do it every few months or so
and on a few designs to attempt to get a little more interest in my designs.
