Such an iconic set that I had my eyes on for a while. I'm not willing to
buy an original copy because the bricks might be stiff even in the best condition
and that's likely to cost me an arm and a leg. I figure modern counterparts
wherever possible would be ideal so I'll likely replace the heads with hollow
stud varieties.

My only concern are the stickers... How would I go about getting a decent reproduction
set, if sharing that sort of information is allowed on these forums?

Stickers can be ordered.

But in my opinion it might be cheaper to buy the parts with stickers separately
and then put them on the set instead of buying the sticker sheet.

It sounds like a fun project but besides the stickers I would check how well
modern yellow blends together with 80's yellow since you can't get modern
versions of at least these three:

Part No: 3685  Name: Slope 75 2 x 2 x 3 Double Convex
*
3685 Slope 75 2 x 2 x 3 Double Convex
Parts: Slope {Yellow}

Part No: 3581  Name: Brick, Modified 1 x 1 x 2 with Shutter Holder
*
3581 Brick, Modified 1 x 1 x 2 with Shutter Holder
Parts: Brick, Modified {Yellow}

Part No: 73037 Name: String Reel Winch 2 x 4 x 2 (Light Gray Drum)
*
73037 String Reel Winch 2 x 4 x 2 (Light Gray Drum)
Parts: String Reel / Winch {Yellow}

If I can't get them in modern counterparts, that's alright with me. I'll
buy the originals.

On another note, I'm pleased with the cost so far. I'd say I have 90%
of the set purchased with new parts and parts in good condition and I'm at
$136 before taxes and shipping. I decided to replace the red window bricks with
headlight bricks that I plan on flipping around; not sure if they'll work
but if they don't, I'm out less than a dollar on them.

I ended up at $197 before taxes and shipping, not including the minifigure items.
Given how expensive the original minifigure items are even in terrible shape,
I'm going to attempt to get modern counterparts in bluish greys or silver
(all other greys are true to the set). The only other place I cut corners besides
the minifigure heads is the window bricks being red headlight bricks. I'm
trying to keep costs as low as possible here yet staying true to the original,
but I did do what antant7 suggested and purchased the other parts for which there
were no modern equivalents.

If I were to make a wild guess, I'll be able to get the instructions and
entire set with new and like-new parts for roughly $250 before shipping and taxes.
After shipping and taxes, well, that's something else entirely (believe me).

Does the $200 include figures? If you try to get them all separately, you’re
looking at probably $200 more.

I’m a bit confused by your effort here as you could probably get an original
in decent shape for about $250. I’ve sold 3 personally (still have 1 complete
and 1 missing 1 fig I think). It’s been a year or so since I sold one, but I
think they went for $229, $259, and $399 (this one also had some unused original
stickers). If you haven’t already pulled the trigger on buying the parts, I’d
say just look for a deal.

I've got some bricks from 1985 that came from a Basic set I purchased sealed
and the bricks are pretty stiff. I can't help but think it'd be the same
for this set given its age.

I'd like to have new bricks without any wear from age and doing it the way
I am I can do that while getting pretty close to the $250 mark if I choose newer
kinds of pieces for minifigure accessories. The $197 includes the castle itself
and the minifigures but not the accessories.

At any rate, I ordered around 95% of the set already so I'm going to have
to go through with it. It makes sense to me and I'm pretty happy with my
decision so that's all that matters, right?

If the $197 includes the knights' facemasks (and shields and armor to a lesser
degree), then that's not bad.

Replica sticker sheets are easy to find and fairly cheap. BrickStickerShop
or the like are good places to look. Some of the Ebay versions can be of poor
quality.
