I'm thinking of changing my store to specialize in minifigs and accessories
only. My idea is to buy bulk lots of Lego, wash & sanitize all of it, then keep
the minifig pieces to sell here. I would resell the bulk lots on eBay. When
I resell the bulk lots, they would be clean and 100% actual Lego pieces, but
without any minifigs.

Any thoughts on this?

I think it will save you a lot of time.

If you are selling as bulk on ebay, I'm not sure I'd bother washing it
or even checking every piece.

Hmm, how will the standard rise if everyone aligns with the lowest?

It is not so much about standards but how much extra a cleaned and checked kilo
sells for compared to as found, and the amount of time it takes to clean and
check it.

Although if you do check every part is genuine, you can of course pick out any
you recognise as valuable.

Ah, yes, I forgot about the invested work.  I never count my hours: too many
zeroes (before and after the decimal separator )

I'm hoping it will add more value and sell for a higher price. Especially
if it's advertised as "100% Lego washed and sanitized".

It is worth checking what value there is in the difference before investing too
much time. For some lots it will be worth it, some not. There are definitely
different types of bulk!

I've sold a fair bit of bulk locally through Facebook by the kilo and if
it is general 'kid lego' from say 2010 onwards then parents don't
seem to care, or at least want to pay a premium, for washed and the odd megablok
is not going to be an issue. 80s and 90s bulk I'm more likely to check but
that is because I am more likely to pull out any hard to find parts either for
myself or to sell on individually rather than as bulk. I find keeping back cheap
generic city minifigures that are not worth selling here helps sell bulk too.
A kilo plus five figures is much more attractive than a kilo with no figures.

Buy bulk, take out the pieces you want, sell the rest.

Wash the parts you want to sell.

We buy bulk lots, pull the figs and sometimes set parts, sell the rest of the
clean (semi-sorted) bulk to local people who have lego stores. Occasionally we
will sell lots on craigslist. works for us!

-I operate similar to this. The loss of sales vs time saved is a necessary trade-off
for me with little ones at home.

Here are my thoughts:
-I focus on the figs and the bulk becomes an after-thought.
-I sell complete figs and many licensed theme figure parts on BL. (or valuable
stuff)
-I bulk a few of the less valuable or time consuming theme figs on eBay.
-I bulk everything else leftover locally to save on shipping and fees. (These
are random mixed lots including off-brands and all the other "stuff" you get
in a lot.)

I did this once and made about a 200% profit within a year, BUT:

- the bulk lot was very cheap (50+ lbs for $100)
- there were a few minifigures and a ton of mini-dolls
- I let the bulk go at the same price I paid ($2 per lb), but then a lot of it
was weird Friends colors
- in addition to the minifigures and -dolls I also held onto the 8x16 and 16x16
plates

I've found keeping Friends separate can help in bulk pricing if not already
mixed up. Keeping traditional colours from Friends (or vice versa) increases
the values of both. A big pile a Friends colours with one each of the five common
Friends minidoll characters can sell quite easily, more than if there are obviously
bits of City and police or fire all mixed in. I'm guessing to parents of
little girls that don't want the "boy stuff" mixed in.

Interesting. I've got a similar box going of minecraft. Started with a partial
set and I've just been adding anything that's minecraft looking (within
reason) to the pile.
Jumper plates, tons of torches, bricks / plates in certain colors... etc.
And then a Steve, Alex, Skeleton, and Zombie.

My bulk processing came to a grinding halt so I haven't actually tried to
sell it yet. Hope to fill it up some more as the box is perfect size for squeezing
4lbs into a cubic rate.

Might experiment with a listing like "supplemental minecraft lot" etc...

I think it makes sense for any themed bulk lot, so long as you can find a buyer
for that theme.

I had a load of Angry Birds sets I got in a bulk lot. I bundled the mixed up
parts with half a dozen castle figures and got way more than I would have selling
it as Angry Birds.

I do a bit of a hybrid on my used lots. I'm pretty picky about what I buy,
but when I do get a bulk lot, I pull figs and any individual pieces over about
50 cents. In my experience, many seemingly common parts (particularly from the
80's) sell very well even at "high" prices. I'd say profit is about
50/50 on parts and figs and it's not like I go nuts pulling parts. But since
you're looking through it anyway to pull figs, you might as well pull the
valuable parts. You might miss that black feather or blue palm tree top if you're
just looking for figs. I was curious so checked my inventory and surprisingly
to me, I have more than double the value in parts that I have in minifigs and
this is all just from used bulk buys.

A good idea indeed. I kind of wanted to do this when i started. Good luck on
this change.
