| As a new seller what is the general procedure when a buyer chooses the shipping
option cheaper than the final cost due to the bulk of the order?
Do I cover the cost or ask for the additional 6 dollars?

You cover the cost and fix your settings so that it doesn't happen again.

There is a learning curve to getting started and adjusting the rates for shipping
especially if you are using instant checkout. One option is to only use the
invoicing method. Then you can pull the order, get everything packed and weighted
and send an invoice with a proper shipping method. Down side to this is that
you do all the work upfront and if the shipping is to high for the buyer, they
have the right to cancel and you have to break everything back down and put it
away again.

Yep -- the downside of the invoice method -- unpaid orders.
Since I really do not unwinding orders, I instead exercise extreme patience in
waiting for payment to materialize. With once-a-month invoicing, I do have
about a 50 percent chance that payment will eventually come. Recently, I got
two payments for orders nearly 5 months old, but like I say -- the chances
of receiving delayed payment is only about 50 percent.

You've sent all these buyers a polite reminder outside the BL system? I find
that method clears up the vast majority of unpaid buyers.

Any suggestions on the best way to fix the settings? It was a thickness issue
rather than a weight issue.

You will have to make this adjustment on each shipping method that you offer,
that you want/need to adjust. If you go to your store settings - Shipping -
select a shipping method to update, then go all the way to the bottom to "Restrictions
and Adjustments". Under the "Package adjustment" select the drop down and then
add a "padding adjustment". Basically you are adding a buffer to be use when
an order is placed. Hope that helps.

As others have said, you eat the cost this time and change your shipping settings.
I recommend adding some package adjustments for the shipping setting selected
( and others as required). So if the package was thicker because you added padding,
then make sure to add some dimensions margins and some package padding adjustments.
This will add to all packages you ship with the shipping method in question.
Since i adjusted all my shipping to using this option (s) , I don't have
any problem with the buyer underpaying shipping on IC.
The only other option is to invoice for shipping on all your orders.

The shortfall on this order should be thought of as the cost (to you) of not
getting it right the first time. Crank up your shipping costs, such that all
your competition (who is too low for their own good) has to eat the shortages
when the buyers go running over there.
You should be aware that BL has given special permission to sellers, to opens
a second test account. You may not actually take an order to the point of generating
an order number, but you can toss stuff in the shopping cart, to see if the system,
is calculating correct shipping.
