Hello All,

It's with a heavy heart that I am forced to leave you all for a while. No
idea in the foreseeable future when I will back. Know I will miss this place,
the members and playing with Lego!

If you aren't there already, many of you will be one day. I am in pretty
intense elder care mode. I have been for 10+ years, but with age comes the increasing
need for intervention in all things. My mother just turned 94, amazing. She still
lives alone in our family home and I want to keep it that way until I/she can't.
It is a pretty exhausting time and emotionally intensive job. What was 1 day
a week is now 4, and constantly on call for problems. The home infrastructure
is also crumbling - so scrambling for contractors for many issues - and we all
know the pain that can be.

One day, I will have time again and hoping I still have the stamina/knowledge
to make a presence once more.

all the best, Judith

Thanks Stuart - her timeline will determine all. Have to say, when you have 3
other siblings who do nothing, it's a bitter pill to give up your life. But
I could never let her down, I'm all she has now.

You are very strong and caring to do this! It must be very hard when there are
those who could help but won't.

Take care and be well,
Jen

Thanks Jen - it is hard. I actually had to tell, not ask, my older sister to
visit her on Mother's Day, as I'll be staying home with my family - who
she helps financially quite a lot. That she wouldn't think to do this on
her own amazes me.

Mom passed a few days ago, aged 83.

I understand, and don't worry about this, in the end, here it's minor.
But you'll be missed and welcome any time.

I'm so sorry Sylvain - you can think you're prepared but the truth is,
you're never prepared for that day.

all the best, Judith

What you're doing for your mother is supremely difficult in ways beyond simple
exhaustion or the disruption of personal needs and desires. Some of these difficulties
will only become apparent after she's left you, Judith. Psychologically taxing
caring for another as they fadeaway, much more so for a parent or child.

I’m eager to learn what you might learn during with this BL-hiatus:
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1161196 Please share when it's time.

… But my hope is that you’ll make the effort to stay involved in what’s been
in a sense, your forum of the last 15 years. It can be a good place to find a
little solace

The subject of caring for me when it’s my time, came up for the first time between
my kids and I, some time ago. Of course, I tried to make light of the fact that
dad's not gonna be around forever, by saying something like “no biggie, just
find a decent raisin ranch to stick me in” Neither my son nor daughter appreciated
the humor at all. In fact, my daughter upset and with a stern voice, declared
“You’re living with us, dad!" Subject dropped

After spending years sheltering them, parents never want to see their children
burdened, even when grown. To then perceive oneself to be that burden… very difficult.

Great message Cory! I can't believe you found that thread - I had completely
forgotten about it and that point in time - rereading it was a great reminder
to me (with my own words, lol) to try and find balance.

My husband and I have made those jokes with our son of our demise. Typical sense
of his dark humor response - "It's okay, I'll just put you in a home."
And I hope he really does when the time comes. I don't want to put any of
this on him.

Actually wasn't looking for it, I just remember conversations that have more
importance to me.

I had completely forgotten about it and that point in time - rereading it was a great reminder

Good. Thought it might.

Completely understand, Judith. There is another side to this though, which I
left out not wanting to be too lengthy. That is the sometimes profound meaning
and keen sense of purpose that’s often found, which offers a caregiver the comfort
and peace of mind needed, especially when it’s a spouse, child or parent that’s
fading.

The alternative is to sit on the sidelines while the inevitable happens, as your
siblings apparently have decided. In the end, it's you that will have had
those precious moments with your mother, your siblings will never know. Makes
you sad for them, almost.

Leaving for the weekend now. Take care.

Good luck to you. I know the demands of caring for others. I had my mentality
and physically handicapped brother-in-law. My time was no longer my time. He
was a handful and died when Covid just started. He was one of the reason I sold
my little Lego collection. It was worth it.
Your mother is very lucky she has a good child. You will be proud of what you
are doing. Caring for another person (or a cat) is what fuels one’s soul and
makes a life worthwhile.

Thanks John P - I had no idea you were going through that. I remember when you
decided to sell your collection. I will do my best for her, as always - but living
30 minutes away causes a great deal of anxiety - her mobility is not good these
days. You question, am I doing the right thing, constantly.

need for intervention in all things.

Just remember to take care of yourself as well. Caregiver burnout is a very real
thing. Your health is as important as hers.

Good luck and be well.

So sorry to hear about the path you are taking. Just remember that you will
need to take care of you. Debbie

One day, I will have time again and hoping I still have the stamina/knowledge
to make a presence once more.

all the best, Judith

All the best to you as well.
I'm just starting the Alzheimer's experience with my 80 year old mom

Take care - Julie
