Classic Lego Star Wars sets vs those of the last few years?

For me, 1999 through 2006 remains the best period for Lego SW sets. Best in simplistic
design and quality. They just look and feel better, imo. Though I can appreciate
the more prolific printing of parts (minifig parts in particular) in the newer
SW sets, the overall design is often disappointing compared to the earlier sets.
A matter of opinion? Maybe… I see it more as objective evaluation, the question
of quality anyway. Though the question of design standards is admittedly, more
a matter of preference or opinion.

That’s not to say there aren’t exceptions or a percentage of the newer sets that
have retained that higher design standard or effort, for whatever reason. The
UCS product line comes to mind, as well as scattered others throughout the SW
lineups of the last few years. But in general, a decline in quality of what should
be their strongest of franchise product lines. I don’t get it, but I’ve been
trying to ever since Disney started inserting itself more into that facet of
their Lucasfilm acquisition. I mean, just walking through the Lego isles at your
retail store year over year, should tell you the direction of the Lego Star Wars
brand.

I had a feeling about this, the day I heard the news that Eisner, of all people,
finally got him to sell Lucasfilms. Never thought he would… Eisner wasn’t even
at the helm of Disney at that point, which begs the question why he worked so
hard in getting his longtime friends beloved franchise out of his hands and into
Disney’s, knowing how personally important Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise
were to him. You gotta wonder though, was it his years of persistent nagging
of a friend that paid off? Let’s hope not and that it was simply the number of
zeros proffered that day, that softened him up for Iger and Disney?

It was a unique alignment I felt, George Lucas and TLG. An ideal partnership
for those first 13 years, to make Lego fans of diehard Lucasfilm fans to include
Star Wars and Indian Jones franchises. That's right, two years of George
Lucas Indiana Jones Lego, too

Anyway, glad it took decades for Lucas to even consider the courtships of Disney
and others.

I'm at the opposite end of the scale - I dislike the early LSW sets, despite
them leading the way. As a LSW collector, I've foregone all sets with yellow
headed mini-figs and original grey/dark grey (except one) (Zam Wesell's Speeder
Chase is the one exception).

Design, build, strength and looks of the modern SW models are generally all much
better than the originals IMHO. It's impossible to compare early models -
eg the Blue TIE Fighters, Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator, Y-Wings, B-Wings,
AT-ATs etc. etc. with the most recent versions; the originals look pretty ropey
compared to modern versions. Source accuracy isn't necessarily a be-all and
end-all, but early models often hint at the source rather than try to mimic it.

But that's not to say that the older models don't have a charm of their
own, but they're not my cup of tea.

I'm no doubt the odd duck in this

Someone has to buy the old sets that people upgrading (or maybe downgrading)
to new sets want to sell!

I've never had any trouble selling my older used SW sets for a decent price.
I'm guessing there are quite a few people that also still want the older
versions so you are not necessarily the odd one out.

I think I prefer the new to the old, and definitely flesh tone minifigs over
yellow ones.

I tend to sell off older ones when better looking new ones come out. Some may
never be beaten in future (like Jabba's Palace). However, I tend to avoid
newer ones that rely too much on stickers. Luke's Landspeeder, for example,
I prefer 8092 to the other versions. It hits the sweet spot between being modern
and not being covered in stickers for the decoration like the Cantina one and
later versions.

Always good input. Thanks.
