I used to sort both my MOCing collection and my store inventory by color. Both
were terrible decisions. It makes the initial sorting a little easier, but actually
finding pieces in your supply becomes almost impossible.

Hello,

It depends on the size of the set that I am parting out. Some of the monster
sets that I have parted out, I have sorted by color first and then I sort down
from there.

When I started using Brickstore (I waited WAY too long to start using the program),
I can easily upload portions of a set at a time so I can get the stock in my
store as soon as I put it away instead of waiting until it is all parted out
and stored before I do the upload.

What do you mean? Take all the parts of one colour from a set and store them
together? No way!

If you are sorting the parts when you part out, you might as well keep them separate
by type and colour. If you do need to mix to save storage space, mix by part
type and not colour. At least that way you can find a part quickly by sight.
That works well for part collections when MOCing too.

Just imagine trying to find one of these:

Part No: 85861 Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Open Stud
*
85861 Plate, Round 1 x 1 with Open Stud
Parts: Plate, Round {Red}
in a big pile of these:

Part No: 4073  Name: Plate, Round 1 x 1
*
4073 Plate, Round 1 x 1
Parts: Plate, Round {Red}
and I think you will have answered your own question.

I think the OP is merely wondering how other sellers sort the inventory
when parting out sets. The default sort is by color, I think - at least I did
it this way for a long time and don't recall ever setting it or changing
it. Now I do it by shape (item name? I think).

Why would one desire such pain?

Long ago, when I started Bricklink, I was sorting by color. Then I had to go
back and change everything. Do it right the first time. I part out a lot of sets
and sorting by part type works fast and easy for me.

I will part out by color when I buy a large quantity of the Classic Creator sets
like 11717 where everything is bagged by color groups.

Brick Seller has a nice feature within it Part Out processing that allows you
to part out only items with the selected color into your inventory one color
at a time will keeping all the data in one Batch (Batches are unique to Brick
Seller keeping all inventory transactions grouped together).

If you are not familiar with Brick Seller, you can find a link to it on the BrickLink
Inventory Software links here: https://www.bricklink.com/links.asp?catID=9
