Hi,

So I put an order in with a store that didn't have many parts but had listed
2 of one item I was desperate for, along with a small set that I could make use
of but didn't really need.

Seller then comes back to me stating the parts are no longer in their inventory,
and offering to cancel the order.

I agreed to that, but then the seller asked me to cancel it because they couldn't.
I couldn't unless I filed an NSS which I was reluctant to do since they were
at least upfront and apologetic (and I know stuff happens) and also because insufficient
time had elapsed for me to do so anyway.

We'd both agreed the order should be cancelled and this is in line with the
cancellation policy - yet neither of us could straight away.

I noticed the retraction page states the order must be in certain states for
this to happen and informed the seller - because I couldn't change the order
status from where it was (it was in "paid" status because of instant checkout).
The seller did change it and has cancelled the order in line with our agreement
and the retraction page. But I'm assuming a refund would have to be separately
issued???

But my question is really around that this seems overly awkward and more difficult
than maybe it needs to be... I mean if it's in "paid" why can't it be
cancelled straight from there? There are other scenarios that I see where this
is a bit broken as well.

And OK, once we both knew what to do in terms of shifting state it's probably
not that big a deal... but I spent half an hour digging before I was able to
find that info.

The seller can cancel the order once he or she files an OCR (order cancellation
request). He or she should refund first.

And change the payment status as none with the edit order button.

So can sellers issue an OCR regardless of the status then? I certainly didn't
get that impression from the help info...

Either party can file the request but only the seller can ultimately cancel.
But the OCR has to precede the actual cancellation.

Well, no, they can't; that's the point of my original post. *I* as the
buyer can only file the request if the order is in certain states (one of which
is NSS) - and if it's not in a state in which I can file the request it requires
the seller to change state for me to do it. I'm not a seller, so have no
idea if the same restrictions apply but it seems crazy if they do.

Well the seller can change the status of the order to something that allows him
or her to cancel it. I believe the payment status has to be changed before the
order can be cancelled, but I'm not 100% sure about that. There may be a
difficulty if the order status is something that can't be changed by the
seller. You definitely need not file an NSS for the seller to be able to cancel
the order.

The seller can change the payment status as none and the order status to pending
with the Edit Order button.
Then he can cancel the order.
