Lots of people have made Lego color charts with actual Lego parts. And lots
of those people have taken photos of them and posted them online.

Google tells me there are 14 Million results for "Lego Color Chart"

So, there are lots of examples to choose from. Good Luck.

Lego colors are definitely complicated. If the colors get much more complicated,
BrickLink is gonna hafta get more creative and more descriptive with the naming
of them -- like the names for house paint or automotive paint or Crayola
Crayons. We are running out of simple descriptors like Light, Medium, and Dark
to name colors.

Really need Lego in Raw Umber or Burnt Sienna now

Yep. Exactly.

For years I have been buying the following two Prismacolor pencils and now I
use them extensively for BrickLink purposes, too:

Tuscan Red 937 and Carmine Red 926

I've found the easiest way to start working this out is to create your own
color grid. I found this very important as I started to build my store originally.
The color guide give a good starting spot: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogColors.asp
and will allow you to start to identify what you have and know against those
you think you might have. If you know the set in your collection, that also
help by look at that inventory list. From there, you can decide how you want
to make and label your personal color chart. Personally I decided to go with
2x4 bricks as much as possible. If they were not available or to expensive,
do what works for you. It will take some time to purchase needed parts to fill
the gaps, but once you've got it, it does make things much easier. I tried
to stay with all the "modern" colors that are more available now, but still come
across some pieces that I don't have on my grid. Then using the BL color
guide I linked above makes it easier to narrow down the other options or determine
that it's not a Lego color.

My reference consists of printed parts that only come in one color. Easy to be
confident that way!

I save on labelling my color charts by laying them out on baseplates in order
by Bricklink color number.
