Hello.. new here to the community forums. I'm currently in my 50's and
I've been collecting sets on and off since I was about 7. I have several
hundred sets and I've got about 90% of the boxes for those sets as well.
Boxes are all in good to excellent condition as I always opened from the ends.
I literally have a closet full of just boxes as most of my sets are on display
in my Lego room. Wife however has been asking me to open up some storage space
in the house for my other projects. I'm wondering how important it is to
keep the boxes for my sets and if they add any value to the collectors out here
should the wife win and I end up having to sell off some of my collection?

Thanks in advance.

I suspect it depends on the themes and individual sets, some original boxes in
good condition are valuable.

How are you storing the boxes? If you flatten the boxes, you can save a lot of
space without significantly diminishing their value.

Welcome here

Generally speaking, the older the set the more important the box.
Older boxes can be very valuable, some old sets are only worth something if you
still have the box…

If possible, you can flatten the boxes to make more space.

And ofcourse check on here what the boxes are worth.

Good luck,
Maxx

I keep all the boxes of the larger sets and flatten them. A good storage bag
for them are the largest of the Space Bags or any of the generic versions. The
largest one that I found fits flatten boxes for the modular buildings and Ninjago
city. Keeps them dust free and flat.

If you collect for future value, yes IF you have the space without having to
pay extra for storage space. I am not sure the cost of storage space will compensate
for the increased value, but it might. If you mostly want the sets to build
and play with, saving the boxes seems pointless to me. If you like having the
sets for decoration (after built) maybe cut up all the boxes and make a huge
collage. Boxes are also good for wrapping Christmas presents if you want to
make the receiver think they are getting a cool LEGO set. Skip the wrapping
paper and put a ribbon around the box. The feel and sound are harder to disguise,
but not impossible. I have a huge stack of flattened boxes in my attic and now
I am getting to old to be able to safely get up into my attic. I looked up the
prices of the sets, of a few of the boxes I have, and the difference in price
between listings with the box, and listings without the box, were not significant.

Some old boxes are worth hundreds of dollars. Search for the set number on bricklink
and you will find an entry for the box

Personally, I think boxes are an important part of Lego. They complete the set
and are a form of advertising and art work in their own right. Especially vintage
ones with elaborate fold-up fronts, display trays, etc. Often times, a vintage
box will be worth just as much as the set it came with because most people did
throw them away.

I definitely wouldn't throw anything vintage away and new sets can have both
ends up and be folded up. Selling them depends on the personal value you attribute
to it.

I've seen people on other websites selling boxes from even new sets for such
a high price I can't imagine who would buy it. I own vintage sets that I'd
love to buy the boxes for but the trouble is that shipping a box is so expensive,
even flattened.

I own only about 75 sets and keep boxes. Emotionally, I would no sooner throw
away the boxes from my Harry Potter sets than I would throw away the dust covers
from my Harry Potter books. It's part of the set in my eyes and it's
part of the play for me to flatten and file the boxes as much as the ritual of
sorting the pieces while building. It gives me pleasure.

But as far as cold hard cash goes, I'd say as others have said. You can check
prices on this website of sets with box and without box and do the math to help
you decide.
