| In light of the upcoming international sanctions against Russia, what is Bricklink's
stand?
I suppose that when all international economic traffic with Russia will be disallowed
this also implies that BL (as an American registered company) may no longer handle/support/allow
traffic between shops and buyers located in Russia and the rest of the world.

I should think BL's immediate action should be to temporarily close all Ukraine
stores. There are 18 currently open, and I would understandably assume that many
of those store owners aren't thinking about their stores at the moment.

sanctions would apply to Russian stores, not Ukrainian stores. There are 240
stores in Russia right now:

Yes, but right now Ukranian stores aren't it position to fulfill orders.
So if anyone buys from them, they're going to lose money more likely than
not. That's why I suggest Ukrainian stores should be temporarily shut down
until/if things calm down.

You can't impose that on anyone. It would take away their right to decide
for themselves, even at this relative insignificant scale of a lego store. If
anyone wants to close their store the owner is the one to decide.
|
That's like saying BL shouldn't shut down stores with 3 or more NSS.
If we look at this logically and practically, I doubt those store owners are
even in position to close their store. If anything, simply close all Ukraine
stores with the ability for the owners to open it again immediately. That way
those that may still have access to internet and their stores can resume right
away.
As far as I know, no traffic is even entering/leaving Ukraine, so it's impossible
for them to ship out orders right now.

While I'd recommend buyers shopping to Ukraine to be cautious and ask for
the shipping conditions, anyway, it's *now* Ukraine especially needs help.
Closing those stores is just a silly idea, I'd say.

Waiting for an official position from BL, it's up to each of us, buyers and
sellers, to determine how we want to act toward the russian market. BL does give
us the tools right now to act immediately on that matter.

When sanctions apply because of law applicable to Bricklink or the seller, we
should comply with them.
As long as the politicians are still deciding about which sanctions to implement,
Bricklink should wait. It does not make sense to take measures based on what
you guess that they might be. We will know more in a few days time.
As a buyer, I would not order from both the Ukraine and Russia now. But I think
that it is not up to Bricklink to enforce that as long as no sanctions apply.

Being a US company, BrickLink is required to comply with any sanctions that the
US government imposes on other countries or regions.
Our policy for eligibility is stated explicitly in our Terms of Service:
The Site is not open or available to residents of any country that is subject
to any U.S. sanctions or residents of any country where otherwise prohibited
or restricted by law.
https://www.bricklink.com/v3/terms_of_service.page
(Section 1)
If US sanctions are imposed on Russia or Ukraine, we will comply with government
policy. Unless that happens, though, we have no plans to limit eligibility in
those regions.

Thank you Russell. This is exactly the reply I was looking for.
I wish everyone in the countries involved in this terrible situation the best
of luck.
War is above our imagination. While LEGO is all about imagination. Poor comparison
perhaps, but yeah... I'm struggling with the situation right now.
Let us pray for peace!

My estimation is that sanctions (I guess the idea being to motivate changes at
the highest level by changing people's minds about their government) are
going to be completely ineffective/counterproductive for the reasons I outlined
here: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1329597
But of course, if governments should decide on it, it makes sense Bricklink has
to follow along.
