I'm finally getting around to going through my son's vintage set tubs.
He has a lot of the old star wars sets using the old light gray and old dark
gray - all in display condition - he built and displayed and didn't really
play with them. I looked up the at-at 4483 set and there's only been one
sale in six months for $224 not in US - ebay is worse at average $90. Yet the
part out value is $388. I am really at odds for the best option to make my son
some $$ for school loans. What is the best way to go here? Looking for advice.

The parts are still valuable because they are old gray. The sets aren't because
they have been redesigned better and yellow minifigs aren't that popular
anymore.

Some small amount of advise, Judith: check your son's set for this helmet's
print, trapezoid or full triangle?

If it's the full triangle it's worth WAY more.

How do you know that!!!

To two of our premier Lego Star Wars collectors here: keep it in your pants!

It's the common or original trapezoid pattern, Judith has.

I always get excited when someone mentions 4483.
That's how I found my two full triangle versions.
Still think it deserves its own catalog entry, but that argument never goes anywhere.

Speaking of Star Wars figures that deserve their own catalog entry, I remember
you and Kevin talking about a one of the Han figures with a Hoth parka that was
unqiue in a similar way to the full/truncated triangle on this figure. I never
really got in on that discussion and it's definitely been purged from the
forum by now. Any info on what that was all about? I may be interested in adding
it to my collection if I know what I should be looking for.

Yes, I know the minifig you referring to, Pete.

Don't have those files anymore. I've moved on, both figuratively and
to a new Mac Just didn't save much from those Lego days

I'm sure Kevin still has pics and data, though. Knowing him.

These are the variations I have. I think the one on the left is the "rare" whiter
fur but I'm not positive. Also don't know what listing the white variation
would have fallen under or the story behind the variation. Let's see if Kevin
chimes in.

I'm no Kevin, but -

The minifig in the discussion was sw112 (now called sw0112):

Minifig No: sw0112 Name: Star Wars
*
sw0112 Star Wars
Minifigures: Star Wars: Star Wars Episode 4/5/6
Marked for Deletion
The discussion at the time indeed focused on the headgear. To quote a younger
popsicle:

What makes the fig rare is it's headgear.
Very few made, and even fewer are found because of the confusion expressed here
in this thread.

For the serious collector, the fig must come with the headgear to the left.....
dark blue with true white fur & reddish brown hash marks

and yes, all of mine are gone except one, which is reserved for a collector that
knows his stuff.

Niek.

Apparently they were given away as a promotion in Europe, though I have yet to
find any concrete evidence of this. If anyone has any information on the origins
of this figure I would be highly interested.

There are definitely collectors for parts in the old grays. The printed dish
pieces in this set tend to go for a good bit of money. This set is much harder
to sell nowadays, especially given that there have been many AT-AT models released
over the last few years. Parting it out might only guarantee the sale of a few
of the more desirable parts, so you may be holding onto other more common parts
for a while.

Yes, you’re quite right, so many newer versions. I guess this one is destined
for parts, too bad, I actually prefer this older version.

some $$ for school loans. What is the best way to go here? Looking for advice.

I also prefer this older version. It has stability issues around the head, but
it’s a beautiful display piece and decent for its time. Definitely was one of
my favorites while I still had it.

I’m not sure exactly why this particular set doesn’t sell very often on Bricklink
in the United States, but it might have something to do with the availability
of the current models. It’s a desirable set for old school collectors, but it
is certainly overshadowed by its successors. This one might be worth selling
fully built and hoping that the right person comes around your listing. Is that
$388 part out value assuming these parts are new or used?

Yet the part out value is $388.

Are you basing that on actual sales, or on what other sellers are asking for
those parts ?

There is a usually a bid/ask spread there.

I would sell the set at - at least - PO value and give it a month or two (see
what I did there). When a set is rare on BL it may have potential value that
the last 6 mo. Sales don’t account for.

You can try selling it locally on a "mom's" internet site or Craigs list.
When thinking of part out, consider the time involved in listing and shipping
the parts.

I'm honestly surprised that a lot of vintage stuff isn't worth a whole
lot relative to how quickly newly retired stuff is jumping up in value.

I honestly prefer the look of the older star wars stuff because it looks more
lego-y and less like a model recreation of what it's meant to represent.
