I love ebay and have been a member since Jan 1999. But I am starting to wish
there was another way to sell. Why am I upset at ebay? I stopped and figured
out what percentage of sales I am paying ebay.
I get 250 free listings a month, if the item sells there is a 30 cent fee. When
sold there is a 12.55% fee. Ok, high but not too bad. But they charge the 12.55%
on the shipping. I charge exact shipping and estimate the shipping costs (by
weight.) If I am wrong I refund any charge over the post office rates. I do
not get any of the 12.55% back for the refund. After 250 items are listed there
is a 35 cent fee. If your list as Buy It Now, it automatically relists and that
goes towards the 250 free listings and uses them up. I also use their GSP and
they charge around another $1.50 for each sale. They have ulta-high shipping
rates for the buyer.
Just a rant because ebay just drains the money out of you as a seller. More
than a wife or girlfriend or both.

Both? Bu-but you can't possibly have both together at the same time - I mean,
can you?

Anyway, BrickLink fees are simple, straight and reasonnable, which is the good
way to make business in the long run.

And this is also why many of us do love BrickLink.

So, stop complaining and please stay away from eBay dear John!

And please PM me about this story one could get "both" )
Take care of you.

I cannot stay away from ebay. I am selling my huge collection of Simpsons.
I started with over 4200 different Simpsons items, from Kidrobot figures, Neca,
toasters, bowling balls, dinner ware, and fine china.. And I am selling my Wizkids
Star Trek Attack Wing and Heroclix. I had both lines complete and the Attack
Wing is selling very quickly. So I need ebay more than ebay needs me.

I collect movies and tv series, Eaglemoss Star Trek and other lines, and large

Barbies.
Now I have move room.

That is what I do.

It is so hard to determine the prices on ebay. I look at what others are selling
for and price less. That's what I did on Bricklink. I do not make a business
out of selling, just want to get a reasonable amount and get the stuff out of
my way. I am somewhat different than most sellers. The money is secondary to
making someone else happy and making room for my new interests. And I am trying
to help my heirs. They would not know what to do with all the crap I collect
and probably would have put my Lego and Simpsons in garage sales. And every
bit helps us feed more cats. I am now feeding 12 outdoor cats and 6 indoor cats
and carting a lot of food to the community college to help their 90+ cat colony.
(We just had a cat bring her three kittens who are living on our patio. We
got heating blankets in the back for the babies so they are cozy now that it
is winter here.)

You realize there’s an eBay forum for this type of complaint? Or was the point
to find new venues to express your disgruntlement with the site?

You seem to have known and accepted their terms, only to offer complaint afterwards
to others

Sorry, no sympathy here

No sympathy needed. Just stated the facts. I am making thousands selling these
two collection, but wanted to say to others how ebay squeezes the last penny
out of the sale. It just shows the fee system at Bricklink is so much better
and seller friendly. I did agree to their terms and they are free to charge
whatever they want to. I guess it is just subterfuge when they raise things
and change their system. I, and probably the majority of users, do not read
the terms when they are changed. There is nowhere else to go. eBay has the
market wrapped up. They have managed payments and got ding legally for not sending
the payments daily. They pretty much have the out of country shipments payments
going to ebay.
Not a complaint afterwards, more like does everyone realize this. It is like
getting married then divorced. You promise to accept your partner for eternity,
spend a couple of years where everything is good, things go badly slowly over
the next few years, get a divorce, and then spend the next decade paying spousal
support and child support.

I’m just grumpy, John

Been carrying the weight of others for so long (in my life, not here) those that
prefer to complain over taking action, I sometimes let it out on others. Working
on that, though. Getting better, I think

Always enjoy your posts, hope you keep them coming.

Do you guys not get regular offers of low fees? Here non-business sellers get
70% off fees every two weeks or so, ending up paying about 4% plus the fixed
fee. After taking into account paypal fees necessary here, the eBay fees are
somewhat cheaper than BL. We get 100 items per offer, which is plenty for me.
It is ideal for used sets, bundles of minifigs missing parts or with parts switched,
and so on. Stuff that won't sell for top price here or haven't moved
in months, and virtually everything sells on ebay if priced fairly.

If you read the Discworld series (by pTerry, mayherestinpeace) you would learn
that headology is Granny's term for pulling the wool over people's eyes
... for their own good.

As a buyer I find eBay to no longer have the bargains it used to have (or if
it does, it is hard to find them among all the clone junk and jacked up prices).

However, I do understand why they now charge fees on shipping cost. Too many
sellers were inflating shipping cost so as to minimize their fees. Many sellers
still do this and since they pay fees on it anyway, it baffles me.

I never use eBay.  I don’t even know if you can sort by price and if it includes
shipping

Otherwise, there may be a psychological effect.  People notice/remember prices,
not shipping?

One can sort by lowest price + shipping first, however it pushes sponsored content
intermittently through the list, even if it is priced much higher.
I do still use eBay to buy certain obsolete items, but rarely. I refuse to buy
anything that has not been off the market for a while for more than original
retail price. I have only once seen any LEGO on eBay that was either a better
deal than (or not available) on Bricklink. I did pick up a large Duplo brick
24x36 (really a building plate, but brick thick so listed on BL as a brick).
It was interesting that multiple people had placed bids, but there was also
a buy-now at a reasonable price slightly higher than any current bid, so I bought
it with the buy-now.

out what percentage of sales I am paying ebay.

They still recoup some of their fees from the markup.

More than a wife? Come on you're just being dramatic now. I wish I could
limit my wife to 12.55%

Ebay also has millions more users and almost instant sales compared to here.
Especially on sets and odd lots.

Its a give and take.

Did Ebay increase selling fees from 10% to 12.5% or is it because Ebay collect
PayPal payments and so there won't be any PayPal fees for seller? In this
case, 12.5% is better than before (10% + PayPal fees about 3% to 4%)

I do not know if everyone pays the same, but that is what mine came up to. You
are correct about it is slighly less than paypal and ebay combined. But then
you have to figure the fee added on to the shipping charge also. I tend to over
estimate shipping and do a refund for any amount over that. I do not get any
money back for that. On the refund page they call it a shipping discount. And
sellers get stuck on combined shipping. We pay for each shipping charge as listed.
Five items might have a $3.00 shipping which totals $15. You pay the fees on
$15 and when you combine them and the shipping becomes $8.00 you still pay the
fee on $15.
