I have a picture of a mosaic that was built using LEGO and I looking for some
help to determine how to buy the bulk pieces so I can also build one. I am new
and would help any guidance, direction or FAQ that may help me. I have attached
the piece that I would like to build. Thanks for anyone's help in advance.

I found where someone had "laid out" the proposed pieces (img 1), but then I
found an example where it had actually been built and looks much better (img
2).

The grid in you second picture will definitely make the process much easier.
Unfortunately, it will still take a bit of work to "work out" all the necessary
parts. Essentially you are going to want to create a wanted list for sure (upper
right "heart" icon) to keep track of all the parts that you will want. I would
suggest that you take your second image and break it down into a functional parts
list. 1x brick come in many lengths from 1x1 to 1x16, but availability in color
and cost for parts will factor into your cost.

You can use the general search bar for "catalog items" and search for "brick
1x1" or "brick 1x2", etc to find different part lengths. From there, you can
add them to your wanted list in the necessary color and then add the total number
of each part that you want.

Once you have your list created, you can then "buy" your wanted list from sellers
here on the site. You many not find one person that has all your parts, but
given that you will be mainly looking for generic parts in widely available colors,
it's possible that you could get a single seller.

Great piece and welcome to BL. Good luck with your first build.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but the built mosaic is at
least two bricks thick. If you look closely at the black borders (internal and
external) they are one stud "behind" the red, white, and blue fill. Of course
that probably makes the final model stronger, but it would also make the grid
less useful in building.

And who noticed that the grid and the build are not the same scale?  (The build
is something like 80 studs wide, the grid is 64.)

Also, the build uses plates.

If you use “head-on” plates or tiles (like the Beattles mosaics), you can
use a square grid.
If you use sidewise bricks, the grid should be 1x0.833 (say, 80-studs-wide x
67-bricks-high) to be square.
If you use plates too, the grid should be 1x2.5 (say, 80-studs-wide x 200-plates-high)
to be square.

My brain got stuck at the "pepsiness" of the design but brain failure aside,
this would probably be a good job for studio. Relatively simple build to try
in both directions and you can export a parts list at the end when you're
happy with the design.

That's very cool.

First thing I noticed is the finished product and the grid are not the same scale.
In the diagram the eye on the left (it's right eye) is 13 wide from the
tear duct to the outer edge. in the other one it is 17 wide or nearly 25 bigger.

The resolution sort of stinks, but it's pretty straight forward. There is
a black base layer and the red/white/blue (RWB) pieces stick out by one stud
to give it a 3D effect which is kind of cool. There are a few different ways
to accomplish this and they each have pro's and con's.

For example that black layer could be 1 stud deep and all the colored pieces
are *x2s. This would be weak and break like a soggy pancake if you ever tilted
it without a rigid sheet behind it.

Personally - if I were doing this with the intent of having it standing on a
shelf - I would make the whole thing 3 studs deep. The black would be a mixture
of 1x2's standing on end for the areas you see black, and then the rest could
be a patchwork of 1x2/3/4/6/8/10/12/14/16's that are punctuated with gaps
where a 1x3 or 2x3 RWB that go all the way through to act as jumpers and help
add structural support.

The mouth area is mostly white plates that are flipped vertically, perhaps using
modified bricks with side studs

Part No: 32952  Name: Brick, Modified 1 x 1 x 1 2/3 with Studs on Side
*
32952 Brick, Modified 1 x 1 x 1 2/3 with Studs on Side
Parts: Brick, Modified {Light Bluish Gray}
or

Part No: 26604 Name: Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Studs on 2 Sides, Adjacent
*
26604 Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Studs on 2 Sides, Adjacent
Parts: Brick, Modified {Light Bluish Gray}
to get the orientation
flipped over on the right side. The only bricks I can think of off the top of
my head that have an opening for a stud to receive on the studs on the left side
of the mouth are

Part No: 4070 Name: Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Headlight
*
4070 Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Headlight
Parts: Brick, Modified {Light Bluish Gray}
, but these do not have a flush front, so you would
end up with a tiny space when these are turned to the left.

If you want this to last forever, I'd use some "Kragle" and build it on something
that can help you get it vertical.

Looks like the graph is 64 wide and the actual one is 74 wide, FYI.

If it's 74 wide, and the border is 2 of that, then the design minus the border
must have a width of 72 and a height of 60 (72 / 6 * 5).
