So I acquired a copy of the Hogwarts Castle (71043) and am in the process of
cleaning it and doing an inventory check. In doing so, I noticed that I've
only got one of each of the wands that are held by the minifigs. After looking
at the inventory, there are multiple entries of [p=36752c01 ] for each of the
different colors obviously.

So my question is, if one were to try and sell the set as Used/Complete, would
you need to have two wands even though only one is used in the build process
because there are two on the inventory? I understand that it doesn't have
to be on the sprue, but just wondering about the count.

You only need to supply what you need to build the set (and any alternate models)
for used sets, not what it is the inventory. However it is a good idea to indicate
this when listing if the necessary inventory differs from the publicised inventory
- maybe put no extra parts or wands in the description.

That's what I thought, but seeing as I hadn't dealt with any sets that
had parts on sprues yet I wasn't sure. Thanks.

I guess the issue is that you can't have multiple parts as an alternate for
a single part? I wonder if it wouldn't be better to list the part with the
sprue as a counterpart.

I'm confident that most if not all of the Used Complete sets of the following
do not have the 1x1 round plates on the sprue:

Set No: 6927 Name: All Terrain Vehicle
*
6927-1 (Inv) All Terrain Vehicle
161 Parts, 2 Minifigures, 1981
Sets: Space: Classic Space

I think that's where part of know what is in the set (for use) and knowing
what is extra makes it hard with the contents on a sprue. From an inventory
perspective with a new set they will 100% always be on a sprue so I completely
understand this from BL's perspective. Without someone either looking or
build the set though, you don't know if they parts are all used or if one
is extra and since both are accounted for on the sprue in the main inventory,
the second one will not show up in the "Extra Parts" because there are two in
the main inventory.

I'm not sure if there is a good way to fix this for any of the sets, but
it's not just the wands. I forgot about the old 1x1 round plates, but there
are also flowers, and many other pieces like [p=44658c01,85] in

Set No: col07 Name: Jungle Boy, Series 7 (Complete Set with Stand and Accessories)
*
col07-10 (Inv) Jungle Boy, Series 7 (Complete Set with Stand and Accessories)
3 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 2012
Sets: Collectible Minifigures: Series 7 Minifigures
where there is only one, but the inventory has two because it is on a sprue.

I'm not sure if there is a good way to fix this for any of the sets,

Simple¹, there needs to be multiple inventories for each set, at least two:
— new set, what comes in a new box (with Regular, Alternate & Extra),
— built set, what’s needed to build the set (with Regular, Alternate & Counterparts).

And then you can add variants, like “main model,” “main and alternate models”
(for those few old sets that have parts that are not used for the main model
but are Regular because they are used in other models) and even “alternate model
only” (e.g. for models 2 & 3 of 3-in-1s).

where there is only one, but the inventory has two because it is on a sprue.

Wands and knives are “simple” (see previous note) because they are handheld,
so they are not in the inventory of a potential minifig.
Search the forum for discussions about plumes to see the other problem with sprues….

Oh yeah, it definitely needs to be addressed in a general way, not merely with
a special case for HP/wands.

It's super simple, in theory, to fix. On the inventory page AND the part
out page, just have an option to break bundled parts (just like the current "break
sets" option). There should be an checkbox option at the part-out screen to "break
bundled parts in set".

This would also apply to bags of Minifigure utensil parts as well as anything
on a sprue.

I agree that would be very helpful.

Our inventories reflect, as close as possible, the contents of New sets.

Rules regarding completeness of Used sets is only addressed within item listing
rules, not the catalog.

It's a good trap for sellers and confused buyers, but it's the only system
we have had available to us. It is important to inform buyers of any small discrepancies
when listing Used sets.

Since many New and Used set inventories are inherently different, I am hopeful
one day we will get the tools to indicate the inventories of each.
