Hi,

I was wondering if anyone is listing both there new and used Lego as used. I
can see a lot of benefit to it and very little reasons why I shouldn't. Just
wondering if anyone has tried it and how it effected sales.

Thanks

I'm slowly moving in that direction. I initially separated out all my new
parts, but the sales patterns have convinced me that listing everything as used
is better except for two categories -- regular bricks and regular tiles.
I intend to keep listing those as new when I acquire them new. But overall, I
sell far more used parts than new parts, even proportionally, and buyers seem
to appreciate having their expectations exceeded on the quality of "used parts"
more than having their expectations met with new parts.

I think it will A-FFECT my sales positively, but I wouldn't necessarily suggest
others follow suit with THEIR stores.

That's a good idea to keep some items still new and used. Didn't think
about that, I might just do the same.

There are two fairly obvious reasons:

It cuts the prices you can ask for the new parts (and still sell it).
It cuts the number of people likely to be interested.

I have found that neither of those are necessarily the case, both anecdotally
and by carefully tracking and analyzing the price guide.

For retired parts, retired colors, rare parts -- yes, listing as new is far
better. But common parts, currently-available parts, recently-released parts,
etc. tend to sell at similar prices as new parts, and usually at a better proportional
rate.

And overall, from watching the price guide on numerous parts from various time
periods, there are far more used-condition and any-condition buyers combined
than there are specifically new-condition buyers.

My high prices and continued sales would refute that reasoning...

Been doing that for years; it makes managing a massive inventory (I've maintained
over a million parts for years now) much simpler that way by myself... the only
items I will typically list as new are minifigures, cloth items, sticker sheets,
and a few various items (like stuff on sprues)... but the bulk of my parts is
listed as Used, even though many would be considered brand new; I find my Buyers
are always really happy to find that the "Used" items they ordered, are in like
new condition...

Still though, it makes managing a massive parts inventory easier as one inventory
("Used"), as opposed to two ("Used" & "New")...

Life is Good.

The time part is a big seller for me and why I'm thinking about doing this.
It will make picking orders much faster and allow me to separate pieces more
where I now have some together. The more time I safe the more I can list and
in return get more orders.

The amount of orders should cover for the price difference in pieces and therefore
make more profit.

I find the responses here very interesting. For several years, we sold mostly
used and hardly any used. Within the last couple of years, we've gone towards
a lot more new and have seen a dramatic increase of sales. 99% of our orders
now contain at least 50% new pieces, with probably 80% of that having at least
2/3 new. We currently have 300,000 used 365,000 new, yet the new is almost triple
the value.

So with our experience, I'd say totally separate the two conditions!

That does not equate money in your pocket

The value may be higher for "NEW" parts, but what do your books say?

Having a high value inventory very means little compared to sales and again,
money in your pocket

Also, whenever these questions come up, every BL seller seem to live on a planet
with NO time. Just how much time does this elaborate stock system take?

Looking at the most sold items new compared to used, new sells way more than
used.

Um.. it's not elaborate at all. Very simple. In fact, it's no more complicated
than just selling used, just may take a bit more space which I understand hobby
sellers may not have.

How long ago did you separate it and do you remember how many pieces you had
roughly at that time?

Obviously you are getting a good amount of sales

hmmm... I'm thinking about two years ago is when we really started to buy
into new, and probably about 400,000 pieces (split half and half between used
and new).

I was looking at your store and noticed you have a max lot limit of 1500 lots.
Just out of curiosity, what is the largest # of lots in 1 order that you've
gotten?

My guess is they set that limit because it was advised by Russell, following
“attacks” where a buyer would buy the whole store and break the store.

I can see the benefits of taking such a tack as seller… though I don’t know if
they would outweigh the detriments to a vendor on this site?

Staying with the premise though, moderating it some, you might do as Carol has
practiced for sometime: https://www.bricklink.com/feedback.asp?u=carolannee that
is sell new parts/items as "new" with a description within each listing's
comment section, denigrating the item's condition for prospective buyers.
Underselling the new listing, in other words.

Incidentally, she’s been an inspiration for me as a BrickLink seller. Ever since
my early years as a clueless fool in California with too much budget and too
little knowledge, I’ve tried to anchor my selling behaviors in part by emulating
sellers such her, whom I consider through empiricism to be the pinnacle of selling-excellence.

Of course I’m not of Amazing Bricks caliber, but to quote from the classics “All
men reach and fall, reach and fall” Doesn’t discourage us from reaching in the
first place, I would add

Thanks,

I just took a look at her store but it seems to be closed. I'm assuming that's
because of the holidays. So there is not a lot of information I can see, but
what I do see is that she has about 3 times as many pieces as I have but I have
almost 3 times the sales she got in the last 6 months.

Now I wouldn't base anything on just one store but selling only new doesn't
look promising based on this.

I did think about only selling new for a while because that is all I buy where
as in the beginning I bought more used. But I think there might be a better market
for selling used.

You're misleading yourself somewhat. She's been selling-off for a few
years now, and often closed much like us.

If you wish to contrast n' compare your BL experience with hers, you'll
need to factor the aforementioned.

I wouldn't do it unless it saves you a significant amount of sorting/picking
time and/or inventory space. Obviously what "significant" means is up to you.

There's numerous reasons why I think this is a horrendous idea. Number 1
being, the more lots people see that you have for sale, the more likely they
are to check out your store.

Yes, if they are different parts. Having many lots draws customers, because the
chance is higher that a part someone is looking for is in a shop. With lots that
are the same part, this chance isn't increased. So that doesn't really
do much.

Plus, the quantities will be small, so that increases the chance that the shop
will be disqualified for not appearing to have enough of a part.

(And if you really wanted to bump lotcount artificially, you could just list
1000 technic pins as separate lots.. )

Yes, i've done that a long time it works just fine. There is a saying to
support this kind of approach to selling.

Better to underpromise and overperform, that the other way round.

It's all about managing expectations.

Good luck!
