| Would you and/or Bricklink consider parts/minifigs that smell like smoke new?
It is not just a bit of a smell, it is horrible on each minifig I ordered.
I also contacted the seller after placing the order that he should not send the
items if they smell like smoke as I saw that in his feedback. The seller never
responded but shipped the parts AFTER I sent my message.
Any ideas on how to handle this?
Thanks

I, personally, would not consider them new. However, Bricklink has a definition
of what new is, and AFAIK it does not preclude smoke damaged items.
I would ask for a refund, even if I had to pay return shipping. I would recommend
reading feedback before ordering from now on and don't order if they have
complaints about smells.
Just imagine, if the Lego smell like that, what their house must smell like.

Except that dying at 50 from lung or throat cancer doesn’t prevent them from
making lots of babies betwwen 20 and 50 (or even earlier…).
Well, smelling like an ashtray might reduce their chances at seducing a mate
though….

I don't know, my mother-in-law's house has always smelled fine, even
though she's a heavy smoker, but when we've gotten things from her they've
absolutely reeked of smoke. We once got a bunch of Nat'l Geographic books
from her that smelled like a forest fire. I guess some things just absorb odors
more than others, or perhaps aren't the sort of thing one would typically
clean - books and Lego would fall into this category, I think.

Another negative feedback for the seller and hope future buyers read it before
ordering.

| I'm very allergic to cigarette smoke, and have had this happen with Bricklink,
Ebay, and even store bought Lego. I'll put them in a bucket, and every time
I go to the bathroom pour the water out and put new water in, this usually takes
about a week to get the smell gone. If it's raining putting them in a mesh
bag and leaving it outside will speed up the process.

In my experience the smell is gone within like 2 weeks. I once bought a huge
batch of plastic bags from an excessive smoker for packing lego, it smelled horrible
but even that was fine eventually, I am still using those and they just smell
like plastic now.

Dawn soap and water does well to remove smells from plastic parts. The rubber
parts hold on to smells.

| I have never been able to remove a smoke smell from rubber parts (mainly tires).
If anyone has a good way to do this please post.

They could technically be new. On Bricklink, "New" and "Used" are not descriptions
of physical condition, but rather of history. Even a "New" piece could have
some damage. So, the listed condition "New" is not incorrect.
However, reasonable people would consider that a heavy smell of cigarettes is
a form of damage, since it can interfere with the buyer's ability to use
the parts for their intended purpose. Damage, and other condition problems (including
in my view cigarette odor) should be described in the listing.

And even if their sense of smell is so screwed up they cannot tell that their
items stink, getting negative feedback about it should inform them of this. They
should then change their terms to say they are smokers and the parts will probably
stink, so buyers are forewarned.

One difference with other kinds of damage/condition problems though is that it's
completely gone after a week or so (apart from rubber parts). Not saying that
should mean we're 100% fine with it, but it is a significant difference with
other kinds of damage. In a way you could consider it "slow shipping" instead
of "damage" because it takes some more time before you get what you ordered in
the condition it should be in

I've had a weird experience with smoke smell. I had three bricklink orders
all from different places arrive on the same day, that had a smoke odor. I can
only assume it came from some point in transit.

Mine was from the seller as it was on the inside and I saw several reviews from
different states having the same problem with this seller. Very unlikely that
it is from somewhere in transit.

Regardless of how you and the seller want to proceed, I only wanted to inform
you that I have experienced the smell goes away quite fast when you leave the
parts in open air (not in containers, zip bags, closed cabinets, ...). It worked
for me with a huge lot I once bought.
