I never marked order as gifts for customs. I don't know why to lie about
it in the EU, I don't think there would be extra fees.

With the new scheme, a gift below €45 (IIRC, or around that anyway), is still
exempt VAT. Above that, the VAT is paid at delivery (with a handling fee added).
So:
Gift: below €45 = no VAT, above €45 = VAT at delivery
Commercial: below €150 = VAT paid to seller, above €150 = VAT paid at delivery
(So, below €45 = no VAT, but between €45 and €150, a gift costs more because
VAT at delivery has a handling fee.)
But as all BL sales are commercial, BL already collected VAT for packages below
€150.
So, below €45, declaring as gift won’t make BL refund the VAT.
And, above €45, VAT will be charged at delivery, always, because a gift can’t
have had VAT already collected by the seller as there’s no seller because it’s
a gift.
IOW, marking it as gift is not only pointless, it’s a sure way to have to pay
VAT twice between €45 and €150.
