Just looked at the major sellers in usa and europe - but to buy from usa I think
I am going to pay sales tax, and import duty and a handling fee and a similar
situation from EU.

I know the lawmakers were after the Amazons of the world but is it really necessary
to clobber the 'bit players' in this way.

This saga has shown us it is no longer viable to buy outside the UK and I am
sure lots of others see it that way as well.

No, unless you change your address to a USA state with sales tax, you will never
pay Sales tax.
For the same reasons, you shouldn’t pay EU VAT either.

What you’ll certainly pay, and that goes if you buy from any non-UK seller (not
only US or EU), is:
— UK VAT only, through BL, under £135.
— or UK VAT and UK duty and a handling fee, above £135.
— or both (that is, twice UK VAT + one handling fee) if the UK customs or Royal
Mail don’t realize you already paid UK VAT through BL.

1. Some “bit players” are actually “big players” acting small to pass under the
radar.
2. The goal is to make it fairer to local “bit players,” so they can compete
with foreign “bit players.”

I guess it depends on your perspective. Rather than the sellers, I think they
were after the customers importing stuff to avoid paying VAT and for higher value
but still under £135, simplifying the collection so it is done before rather
than at the time of import. It will take some time for everyone to learn what
they are doing and hopefully it will settle down. When it does, it will be cheaper
than it used to be before the whole OMP tax collection started as there will
not be a Royal Mail collection fee.

There are small sellers on amazon and big sellers on 'small' sites. Surely
they are all doing the same thing though.

Not sure anyone has got it absolutely correct yet eg sales exemptions in the
USA are not catered for yet. Exempt items in the UK are also not yet catered
for. There is a long way to go with the actual details of this - in the short
term it is messy and a bit unpredictable - people paying twice etc IOS numbers
or what ever . Bit sloppy really but you are right in the end it will settle

This isn't about targeting either Amazon or small fish. The consumers
are the ones who have to pay taxes. We are just the ones who are tasked with
making that happen. That's part of the "deal" we made when we registered
as businesses.

I don't like the amount of extra administration I will be facing (when selling
over €10000 to EU countries particularly) but I understand these things are part
of the natural evolution of ecommerce. The thresholds of the past are no longer
feasible today, considering how much people buy online these days.
