| In a recent bulk lot, I found about a dozen or so of these slopes with messed
up stud logos (see pic, ones on the right are the parts in question, left one
is standard). They are identical in mould, weight and colour as the one of the
left, but the stud logos are upside down and/or crooked. Are they fakes?

| I've also found dozens if not over a hundred of them. They do seem like the
real deal but I may be wrong

No, this was fairly common in the '60s and '70s, and I've found a
few pieces from the '80s too. It seems especially common with Samsonite parts,
which were produced right here in Loveland, Colorado where I live, since they
didn't have the same quality control as the pieces produced in Europe. Sometimes
logos will be rotated 90 degrees or 180 degrees or some small amount like
the ones in your picture. Sometimes one stud will have one logo style, like the
open O, while other studs will have a different one. Sometimes a few studs will
have the slightly recessed edge of the stud like the ones on the right in your
picture, while other studs will have the newer slightly rounded edges and even
more will have the oldest sharp edge. I've even found ones a few old plates
with the logo completely missing from a single stud while it was present on the
rest in various styles and rotations, but I sold those years ago.
From what I understand, it was due to poor mold management. I don't know
enough about molding to explain how that led to the various versions of studs
on a single piece, though.
I once bought a large box of parts from a lady who told me her uncle used to
work at the Lego factory in Loveland and would occasionally bring home bags of
rejects and parts spilled on the floor for his nephews and nieces to play with.
Almost the entire box was Samsonite parts, and a lot of them featured "defects"
in the logo. I've sold a lot of them, but I know I have some lying around.
I'll try to find some and post pics when I have a little more time.

This part was introduced in a number of sets (in black) in 1976. all sets released
in the US as well (some even with alternate set numbers compared to EU/rest of
the world)
I'd say this is typical Samsonite carelessness
Cheers,
Ole

I don't think they're fakes. Just out of curiosity, what do they look
like on the bottom?

My opinion, real LEGO.

| I have several pieces like this. The only time I have have seen it is on this
exact same piece. Mine are brown. I think they are new. I found mine in a
batch of used Lego, everything else in it the batch was Lego.

Don't recall who told me about this kind of thing, but back in the day, they'd
do work on the molds and they wouldn't get the alignment 100% straight, or
even close. Now, things are much tighter on tolerances, quality, except for the
whole brittle blue, dark red, and reddish brown debacles...

| I would pretty much guarantee that if it's an older brick (even just pre-2010),
there is about a 0% chance of a counterfeit with the lego logo on it. I've
never come across it and have never even heard of it. I've actually never
heard of anyone trying to to do it even in the past 10 years, but wouldn't
say it's impossible these days.
