| I am getting older, so the memory is not as fast as it used to be. I go into
rooms and forget what I needed. I start to do something on my computer and forget
what I was going to look up.
The other day I am building something with Duplo, for the Toddler (my grandniece
whom I do childcare for) to play with, doing various sorts of problem solving
as I was trying to figure out how to make it hard for her to get parts of the
structure apart. Later that day I noticed I was recalling things quicker. I
have been rebuilding the structure each night, based on how she plays with it
and what she gets apart. After a week of this, I noticed definite improvements
in my memory recall.
Before I retired I did have a job that required problem solving, so it is not
as if my brain was not being used. I haven't been retired for that long
(about 2 years now). But I am really wondering if the type of problem solving
I do when building with LEGO (my own design not just following instructions)
exercises a part of my brain different enough from the problem solving I did
on my job (software engineer) that it really might be helping my memory.
My next challenge is to design something that doesn't require I buy any new
parts, My latest structure started out that way, but quickly evolved into my
buying a few hundred dollars worth of new parts (many of the parts just because
I was already buying something from that seller, and I wanted to maximize my
value of paying to have the items shipped).

Nice read.
I enjoy these type posts, the more personal anecdotes. If you're starting
to be concerned about your short-term memory, they say socializing and exercise
are two things you want do more of, to help maintain that recall. I'd say,
especially socializing.

Socializing went way down due to the pandemic. After I was fully vaccinated I
started some of my social activities again, with friends that were also vaccinated.
But then as breakthrough cases started increasing, I pretty much isolated myself
again.
We (my niece and I) are concerned about the 2 year old not developing socially.
I agree with exercise. Years ago I discovered the impact of exercise on depression.
If the physical activity accomplished something (such as doing yard word) the
positive impact was even greater.

Is that when you do poetry with 3-foot-long words?

| There is truth to the old adage "Use it or lose it." It goes for the mind and
body.
