| Apologies if this topic has been covered, I tried searching but I couldn't
find anything.
Does BL's tax collecting system account for sales tax holidays? My state
(MA) is having a tax-free weekend tomorrow and Sunday. There will be no sales
tax charged on any items below $2,500, including items ordered online.
I know big sites like eBay etc. work this into their systems, do we know if BL
will as well? I may be mistaken, but I think this is the first time our state
has done this since BL started collecting sales tax.
I was thinking of spending a bit of disposable income here this weekend, but
I don't want to get into a situation where I have to chase down sales tax
I wasn't legally obligated to pay.

Yes, I am aware that states do this sometimes. I am asking if BL's tax collection

I would bet heavily on them not to honor tax-free days. AFAICS there is no automated
way of knowing which states have what days tax-free. To implement this, BL would
have to first put in some code to disable taxes for certain states on certain
days, and then somehow track what all these states do (by constantly reading
government web pages?) and manually add these exceptions to the system.
In short, not gonna happen.

AFAIK, BL is subcontracting the calculations. Does that mean they use a library
that’s updated every blue moon, or is it a service that’s used for each transaction?
If it’s the latter, maybe the contractor does know about tax holydays?

It may not be fair to compare BL to sites like eBay or Amazon etc., but those
marketplaces handle tax holidays.
Do these sites each build their own software individually? I.E. eBay's tax
collection system is exclusive to eBay and isn't some package available from
TaxSoft Inc.?
Meaning that each site has to handle tax holidays by brute force as you suggest,
rather than having TaxSoft Inc. automatically update things as my layman's
brain assumed?

Please check with your state department of revenue, for the precise parameters
of the tax free holiday.
In Florida, it is not a full-spectrum sales tax is zero. It only covers certain
types of items, and in several categories only up to a certain dollar amount.
As far as BrickLink is concerned, for sales to Florida, it might cover some Gear
that is also clothing. It might cover some Gear that is software. It does not
apply to sets, minifigs, and parts.

If I buy a Lego set from Target or a minifig via a seller on eBay, they are not
subject to sales tax in my state for these 2 days. I don't see why it should
be any different for a set or a part bought through BL.

Our third-party tax solution is supposed to account for sales tax holidays. In
fact, we have coded certain categories in the catalog to align with the typical
"back to school" product types, just for the tax holiday issue.
Please report back if you find you are paying tax where you think you shouldn't
and we'll look into it.

| I can confirm that BL's system DID NOT charge me sales tax when I paid for
an order today.
So that indicates that whatever tax-collection software BL is using knew about
my state's tax-free weekend and correctly applied it to my order.
