There's no pleasant surprise quite like finding a piece that seems mundane
until you look up the price. One of my favorite examples is this one, averaging
$60 due to being exclusive to a 1997 pirate ship:

Part No: 30033 Name: Plate, Modified 2 x 2 with Bar Frame Octagonal
*
30033 Plate, Modified 2 x 2 with Bar Frame Octagonal
Parts: Plate, Modified {Red}

I bet the majority of people coming across that piece in a pile of LEGO wouldn't
even think about being able to make $60 off it. This can be a good thread for
such people who are sorting their childhood collections, garage sale finds, etc.
and want to make some extra money or simply get excited they own a valuable piece!

What are some other sought after parts that can be easily overlooked?

Wow! Makes me happy to see a valuable Lord of the Rings piece; usually Star Wars
is the perpetrator of expensive set-exclusives (I'm glad I'm not a SW
fan, otherwise I would be very poor!) But I suppose any piece exclusive to a
big enough set will grow in value, no matter the theme.

Those spheres made me think of this. Admittedly, it's not as surprising as
other parts since being a brain, it's pretty eye-catching. But still... the
set it came in retailed for $20!

Its up to $60!! We sort tons of used pieces to sell and we've gotten 2 or
3 of those total. Started out at $20 a few years ago, was up at $40 last year.

But here is one:

Part No: 86500pb01 Name: Cylinder Hemisphere 4 x 4 with R4-P17 Astromech Droid Pattern
*

But her

Plate, a simple plate, 3026, Lt. Blue Gray, $50.00, $35 for 2 faded pieces) -
fortunately I am able to utilize other plates to complete a project.

I found one of these in a random lot I bought:

https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=4502a&idColor=7#T=S&C=7&O={%22color%22:7,%22cond%22:%22N%22,%22iconly%22:0}

I hadn't seen a blue one before so looked it up...it's not mega expensive
compared to some other parts but considering how much material is there (probably
close to zero value) it's worth a surprising amount of money because it happens
to be blue!

Have you seen the prices for the black and dark tan ones? Maybe they should qualify
as a rare substance like gold or saffron, having such a high value-to-weight
ratio! Reminds me of the white dragon plumes:

Definitely setting those aside.

Awesome! Then this thread has already succeeded, but hopefully it continues

I designed a MOC using lots of dark green 1x2 tiles, assuming they were widely
available
Boy was I wrong. Needless to say I had to redesign my MOC

Just checked the prices on the dark green 1x2, wow, over a dollar for reach one.
No way, I'd redesign too.

Yup, did exactly the same with the same part. It's one that's definitely
overdue for reuse in new sets.

Raised baseplates can be absurdly valuable, and you'll find them in 90s collections,
in various conditions.

of $77.

I'm actually quite surprised just what is worth money these days. Seemingly
innocuous pieces that you'd overlook. I have like 40 of those "pirate steering
wheel" in other colors. Who'd know that red just happens to be 60 dollars.

what I discovered is that the little screwdrivers in the tools , that most are
expensive, and certain color are super expensive, maybe because the vacumme cleaner
ate most of them, lol!

I got two of

Part No: x870bc01 Name: Electric, Train 4.5V Whistle Adjustable with Yellow Base
*
x870bc01 Electric, Train 4.5V Whistle Adjustable with Yellow Base
Parts: Electric, Train {Black}

in a bulk purchase one time, was shocked at how expensive a simple whistle was,
I sold one and kept the other.

That purchase off craigslist for $250 also had a

Set No: 6991 Name: Monorail Transport Base
*
6991-1 (Inv) Monorail Transport Base
555 Parts, 4 Minifigures, 1994
Sets: Space: Unitron

in it which I sold late last year. I also found about 7 or 8 other older sets
in it. Needless to say, I doubt I will ever find such a deal again. I let the
person know that they had some valuable items in there, but they just wanted
it all out of the house. I happily obliged them, they got their space back,
I got a bargain.
