The world map mosaic has almost 12,000 pieces, which is about 3,000 more pieces
than the collosseum.

Due to the different designs, it looks like you don't use all the pieces.
Does anyone know how many pieces it uses when completed? I'm curious if it
still beats the collosseum as the biggest set piece-wise.

At a guess, using the BL image and part count, the set consists of 40* 16x16
plates, so just covering those plates with the mosaic tile pieces (without any
pins connectors, brackets or any other parts/gubbins) equates to 10,240 + 40
plates. Which is 1000+ more pieces than the Colosseum (10276) at 9036 pieces.

Thanks! I have a smaller mosaic and there are quite a few plates on the back
to hold it together, so I'd guess closer to 100-150 parts plus studs.

Now it's a bit tempting to buy.

Each to their own, but to me this is one of those sets that you should not judge
by the part count. Multiple 1000s of 1x1 round plates and tiles.

PG partout (parts only): €676.16 (6-mo) / €866.87 (for sale)

Auto-select WL in EU: €663 (all the parts), it can certainly be optimized but
retail is €250 (so BL = 2.7x-3.5x retail), I doubt anyone could beat that on
BL buying parts.

Could be interesting if you don’t live near a LEGO store… and are interested
in the parts (that means mainly the 16x16 bricks and the 1x1s).

Yeah, but when you have a competition with a relative as to who has the biggest
set, and that relative is currently ahead with the coliseum...

Anyhow, I did one of the smaller mosaics and really enjoyed it, I think a map
of the world would be quite fun to do.
