I see this discussed a lot. A buyer wishes to cancel an order and the seller
is more then willing to offer this service. However, this leaves the seller
open to negative feedback even though they are allowing the buyer to cancel (the
seller could go through a NPB).

Please add he ability for the seller to
A. Cancel per buyer's request
or
B. Cancel order (the way it is today)

For option A. the buyer is shown I dialog stating they request to cancel the
order has been received. They choose 1 or 2
1. I did not cancel the order
2. Cancel the order and leave positive feedback (or cancel and no feedback allowed)

This way a seller can cancel the order in an act of good customer service without
risking any negative feedback from the buyer.

Yes, please! It really needs to be an option.

You are quite correct, this is a much discussed and long overdue deficiency with
the site in need of rectification.

A simpler means of accomplishing this, at least to me, is for the party that
initiates the OCR forfeits the right to leave feedback. If the buyer backs out,
then they expose themselves without the ability to slander the seller. If the
seller initiates, they cannot hold the threat of feedback over the buyer.

Not bad...
How about we all just be honest to each other?

I'm not against this, but it needs to have limitations placed upon it.

Or just to make it simple:
deny a buyer the ability to leave non-positive FB if the buyer initiated a cancellation
for any reason.
If a buyer asks to cancel in a message then seller can tell the buyer to start
the 'request cancellation' process on the order page.
No seller should be afraid of a negative FB if the buyer initiated cancellation
and since the BL terms state that buyer must follow through on orders placed
then the buyer can be at risk of a non positive from the seller for wasting their
time (even though we never leave non positive when buyers ask to cancel weather
politely or not).

It seems a good option. I allready have this once, on request of the buyer I
cancelled and then they left neutral feedback (not negative), this has no effect
on your FB rate, but your % will drop (depending how many feedback you have).
I personally think that if an order has been cancelled on request of the buyer,
that option to give feedback would be fine, since in the end there was no transaction.
So at least the option to not receive negative of neutral feedback is maybe the
best option. IF you want to give feedback that's fine, but it cannot be negative
or neutral.

Why would a buyer leave negative feedback after asking for a seller to cancel
an order and the seller complying with their wishes? I've cancelled orders
in the past and never had a problem. Is there evidence that this really happens
frequently enough to be a problem?

Yes, it happens frequently based on just the people that post about it in other
forums.
The most common reasons

1. Cancelling the order after shipping is totaled. In this case, I can understand
a new buyer not understanding that they need to read the terms to understand
how shipping will be calculated. So if a kit takes $20 additional to ship, I
understand a person wanting to cancel and I can live with that. However, in
some cases they leave negative feedback because they think a US seller should
be able to ship a single minifig international for less than $5. (NEGATIVE -
Seller's shipping rates are a rip off!)

2. A new buyer doesn't understand a neutral feedback negatively impacts a
store. They think neutral makes sense as no transaction occurred.

In the vast majority of cases the sellers if willing to initiate the cancellation
but worries about exposure to negative feedback. This leave them with the NPB
option as the only option (which also ties up inventory)

Yes, this is a good idea.
It should be submitted as a suggestion.
