For regular dirt and mud and dust, or for parts smelling of smoke, I soak in
soapy water for a day or two, then soak in water and white vinegar (10:1 or so)
for a day or two, then dry spread out on a towel for a few days. The vinegar
prevents water spots when drying and takes smells off of anything except tires.
A laundry bag is very useful for soaking.

If it has sharpie, paint, pen, sticky dust, or other hard-to-clean items, you
may need to clean parts individually. In that case, a microfiber cloth, some
91% rubbing alcohol, and a little elbow grease will take care of almost anything
except superglue.

If you care about stickers, make sure you pull them out to clean individually
first.

I usually use a soft toothbrush and how soapy water. Soaking first helps. I used
a salad spinner to get all the excess water out of the cleaned parts and lay
them out on a towel in front of a fan to dry. Good luck!

Me too! Dawn + Salad spinner + Towel on Tray for me. (I don't have a table
big enough to lay things out on!)

And, I switched from a soft toothbrush to an acrylic artist's brush as the
toothbrush was leaving very light scratches.

I’m still using a regular dish brush, I haven’t noticed any significant scratches
but maybe I haven’t been looking too closely.

On the other hand, I’ve noticed to my dismay that a magic sponge will tarnish
tiles without removing sticker glue residue, though.

Put them in a container of warm water and add a bit if dish soap and let them
soak a while.
If the container has a lid, shake it to agitate. Dump them in another small
tub, use an old soft toothbrush to get off remaining dirt. This works best if
you stroke each way between studs, especially on plates. Rinse and let dry on
a towel. A fan can help dry them faster.
