I was looking up ball socket, trying to find a part with no success.

When I did finally find the part I was looking for it was listed as having a
ball receptacle rather than socket.

Can these bricks have alternate search terms so that a search for Ball socket
will also turn up ball receptacle and vice versa?

Failing that, standardisation so that if we find the right term we'll actually
get all the matching parts.

Hello,
I have done some research in the catalog about the difference between a ball
socket and a ball receptacle. The results for both a receptacle and a socket
were different yet had the same common element. I will put in some requests to
tweak some of these items to create a clearer common title between these parts.

Regarding your question about alternate searches, I am not aware of any ways
to do this, however it would be a great addition to searching experience. To
be honest, I think this is more of a communication problem between the people
who have named these items.

Kind Regards,
Theo - The_RealRedHex

This is an issue that comes up often. International standardization that appeases
everyone is not feasible without cluttering the catalogue with every possible
synonym people could potentially search for. That is not to say the entries are
perfect as they are, but it isn't a burning issue. Learn to search by part
numbers and use set inventories to find parts in the catalogue, it's a lot
easier.

The issue of Catalog name-standardisation is one that the Catmins have been working
on (with varying degrees of success, given its complexity).

BTW; I would suggest "Socket" for the standard term, because 1.) it is the most
accurate (this is a ball-and-socket joint), 2.) no one is going to see
this piece and search "Receptacle", and 3.) "Ball Receptacle" just sounds inappropriate.
😬

I like Socket better also.
