How can we be certain this is a genuine variant taken from a new set & not a
used minifig with a head thats been handled & had the chin dimple wiped off?

Agreed especially that these early head can vary in pattern, the best example
is:

I also noticed that digital Maul head differed last week whilst trying to work
out which head/minifig this yellow variant belongs to...
