The middle pin was added to the 2-prong connectors in 1981, along with all changes
on train and technic parts that had 2-contact holes before 1981 and got 3 contact
holes after 1981.
The back side on the box shows this wire with connector without middle pin. See
photo attached.

The match Ids should be changed to 2. I didn't know match Id "1" was already
used.

The attached photo is why I was asking about a box with only two holes. The
back of the set box shows a part which clearly only has two holes, not three.
And this is not a render, but an actual photo of the part. Shouldn't that
part be added to these set inventories?

I've edited and reattached your photo showing the part which should go with
the two prong connectors without middle pins. It's not in any of these inventories
and possibly not even in the BrickLink catalog (I haven't checked).

By our best knowledge, the part

Part No: 70026  Name: Electric, Train 12V Remote Control Switch Motor 4 x 8 x 1 2/3 (Undetermined Type)
*
70026 Electric, Train 12V Remote Control Switch Motor 4 x 8 x 1 2/3 (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Electric, Train
Marked for Deletion
does not have a variant with 2 contact holes.
Similarly, for the part

Part No: 70022 Name: Electric, Train 12V 2 x 3 Signal Light Brick with Red and Green Lights
*
70022 Electric, Train 12V 2 x 3 Signal Light Brick with Red and Green Lights
Parts: Electric, Train
The photos of these parts on the box are a big mistake from TLG. Probably, they
first wanted to release them like the photos. However for the part 70026, they
made a small hole in the middle in which the middle pin of the connector 766c01
does not fit.

I am glad to see you come to the conclusion that box images are not always correct.
They use prototypes for these images, which are often sent to the print shop
months before the actual production of the parts and sets begins.

I have heard from good sources that TLG would sometimes drill that third hole
to make old parts work with the new wires.

Yes we know that. For this inventory change request, the part bb81c190 exists.
If it didn't come with 7858, 7859,... then how does it exist? This is why
we can trust the box image for this part.

  I have heard from good sources that TLG would sometimes drill that third hole
to make old parts work with the new wires.

On what part(s) they made the third hole?
But something is not clear. The middle pin did not exist in 1980. It seems to
me that they added the third hole or middle pin in mid 1981. So, TLG released
some copied of certain sets such as 7858 and shipped them to the shelves, then
they were sold as they were (no middle pin). Maybe they drilled the hole to their
parts in storage that they had not used.
If this happened for some parts such as

Part No: 4707pb01 Name: Electric, Train 12V Remote Control 8 x 10 with Switch Pattern
*
4707pb01 Electric, Train 12V Remote Control 8 x 10 with Switch Pattern
Parts: Electric, Train
or

Part No: 70026  Name: Electric, Train 12V Remote Control Switch Motor 4 x 8 x 1 2/3 (Undetermined Type)
*
70026 Electric, Train 12V Remote Control Switch Motor 4 x 8 x 1 2/3 (Undetermined Type)
Parts: Electric, Train
Marked for Deletion
, then we
can verify this. The production dates of these parts are engraved under them.
