The middle pin was added to the 2-prong connectors in 1981, along with all changes
on train and technic parts that had 2-contact holes before 1981 and got 3 contact
holes after 1981.
The back side on the box shows this wire with connector without middle pin.

Wow . . . a minute and a half watching some guy loudly tear the cellophane off
a vintage box with one hand and then only ten seconds which show the actual contents
- and he doesn't even take them out of the box. What a disappointment!
And something of a waste of a new set, too.

Anyway, you're right. The set box does show the connector without the middle
pin. As with the other requests, shouldn't an alternate motor box also be
added to the inventory?

I will reply this to the request for 7859.

Since the day I submitted this request, I opened my Lego boxes after some time
so now I have access to my good (but not 100% complete) collection of trains.

Among the used sets I bought, there were only few of them in near new condition.
One was this set: 7863. The cellophane is still there, the parts are shinning!
The black tape on the cable is still there. I paid for this only 20 Euro! Lucky
me.

Here are some photos.
Note that my set is a later release of this, probably after 1981, since the connector
(and switch) have 3 contact holes.
For the connector, having three contact holes needs more explanation. I will
explain under the request for 7859.
