| I prefer the opposite:
Cost of parts: X
Shipping and Handling: Y
Any optional fees: Z
Total: X+Y+Z
I really don't want to see individual break downs of S+H. If you are doing
shipping separate to handling, then why not mention envelopes are new and cost
A, tape is B and a printed invoice is C.
If someone says handling is $2 is that good? Surely you need to know what that
$2 is for - new or reused envelopes/packaging? $2 could be genuine expenses and
reasonable or could just be an extra for nothing.
Most internet stores don't tell you their costs to the penny, so there is
no need here. So long as I know what the total is at the time of ordering, I
don't care if the parcel ended up a couple of grams lighter than expected
and went in a slightly different shipping band.

| | Currently there is wide abuse of this obscuring of what comprises S&H at checkout.
Transparency currently comes after the sale.
The suggestion is to show this breakdown before the sale.
I think that ultimately is a simple ask.

I totally agree there. I have long wanted instant checkout OR if not implemented
by a store, then the order is not binding until all costs are stated up front
and the buyer accepts them.
What I wouldn't want to see is for a store that does, for example, fixed
cost or estimated shipping to have to state exact (postage stamps cost) prices,
plus whatever left over as a handling fee. There has to be some flexibility for
sellers that don't want to have to cost up every order exactly. For example,
if a seller estimates an order will be 105g and charges shipping for that, and
it turns out once packed the order was 99g and fell into a lower shipping band,
then if the buyer was told $X.XX for shipping and it turns out it was 25c or
whatever less, does he have a right to complain as the seller lied about the
shipping cost? I'd hope not. Saying what exact postage will be almost suggests
to buyers that they should be looking at the stamps to see if the seller was
telling the truth.
