| It would be cool if there was a way to find stores in my city, not just my state,
so we could have the option of meeting up craigslist-style to avoid shipping
costs, and to make new Lego friends.

It isn't a feature because there are (privacy) laws involved.
There are better ways to meet up local Lego enthusiasts.

| Interesting point. I would agree that it would be a privacy violation if the
sellers whole address was provided (however, this is something that is provided
as soon as an order is placed). However, I would have no problem with my city
being available, in the same way as my country and province are.
This could also be something that could be toggled on or off.

Privacy issues come in to play for private sellers, which is perhaps another
reason why BL could introduce a self-certified "I'm a business/private seller"
toggle, which would then allow searching by city without listing those sellers
who (a) self-certify as private and (b) choose not to publicly disclose their
city.

Yes, a simple toggle that defaults to undisclosed would alleviate privacy concerns
for all I think. Even if you live in a thriving metropolis or a hamlet.

If your town is New York, or Toronto, it’s okay. If it’s OneHorse, population
3 (counting the horse), it’s another matter.

Off by default, please.

That’s why I asked the default to be off
People are used to expose their whole lives nowadays. They don’t even notice
when they’re doing it (look at how many people have their birthyear (even birthday)
in their ID). If they want to continue, it’s no skin off my nose, but I prefer
not having to parse a f-load of options to keep my life not searchable by the
first crawler that comes.

Fair enough. But all that crawler has to do (if you're a seller) is to make
a minimum purchase and they have access to your email and address. If it increases
a buyers ability to find my store, I'm certainly fine with them knowing I
live near them or not.

By “crawler,” I was thinking about an automatic web crawler.
I don’t think they’ll make one of those that automatically orders on BL.
(But they make those that search websites for personal info.
Well, they also employ real people to do it for them….)

Fair enough, though knowing the town doesn’t always help about nearness (next,
it’ll be the district or the street…). I rather like the idea of distance
(which wouldn’t be perfect either).

I wish this were an option as well. My guess is that it isn't an option is
due to potential fee avoidance. (just contact the seller and make arrangements
to buy/sell and avoid BrickLink, to spell it out). I wish it could be like eBay's
feature, where I can search on items near me, and it doesn't show what city
they live in, just how many miles distance from myself. So that covers the privacy
aspect when just doing searches. So if I buy something heavy, at least I know
the shipping is lower, and possibly could meet up with the seller to avoid shipping
cost.
I vote yes, with perhaps the limitations mentioned above?

As soon as you’ve messaged someone and they responded, or made a small order,
you have their e-mail address and everything you need to make any arrangements
you want.
Being in the same town isn’t necessary.

It is necessary if you are trying to save on shipping fees, especially for a
large, heavy order. We have filters right now in place that lets me filter out
other countries (since of course that is where shipping costs are a big concern!)
Why not be able to filter even further, and have it by city, or even by county,
and then a pickup order would be possible.

So many factors go into whether or not local pickup is cheaper than postage.
A number of Canadian sellers live really close to the US border such that a US
buyer close to the border may very well find a local pickup in another country.
And on the other side of the coin, not all sellers within the same geographic
area are equally inexpensive for local pickup. I live on one side of a river
which has tolls, the cost of the tolls alone pretty much wipes out the saving
over postage.
Which can mean, a buyer from Blaine WA may well prefer a local pickup whereas
one in Maple Ridge BC would rather pay the postage vs the tolls to get to Surrey
BC.

Maybe (counter-examples can always be found), but it isn’t necessary to avoid
BL fees. Not having the option doesn’t hinder fee avoidance at all. It only
reduces the visibility/possibility of a pick-up option.
I was answering to what was quoted, not to what was cut.

Seems like a bad business decision for BL to make this happen:
First- they will most likely lose fees on many transactions.
Second- they will be opened to the same lawsuits Craigslist is facing everytime
someone get assaulted while making a transaction...
stick to conventions & LEGO building clubs in your area to make LEGO enthusiast
friends in your area.
