For PayPal onsite with Order Status = Paid. If I mark payment status as complete...the
order should appear on my Not Yet Shipped list. http://www.bricklink.com/orderReceived.asp?viewShip=Y&orderFiled=A

I'm most interested in a link showing on my My Action Items area of the My
BrickLink page. I don't really care if it is part of "Orders Not Yet Shipped"
or some other label.

I can back up an order status from Paid back to Ready and it shows in the Not
Yet Shipped list and the link shows in the Action Items.

I am not sure if I understand you correctly, but you are not supposed to mark
an order as "complete". That's for the buyer to do when he received and checked
it.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, Nadine, but if this option is only
for a buyer to do, then why is the seller even able to select this status?

Probably more due to BL's less-than-cutting edge design. There are all sorts
of quirks on this site that don't fully comply with policy. So while the
seller can change the status to complete, this page clearly and fully puts the
burden on the buyer:

http://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1138

Buyer and Seller each have tasks to do during the lifetime of an order. These
tasks called "Action Items" are located by default on your myBrickLink page (if
there are any). The following is an explanation of what each action item means:
Buyer:

Change Order Status to Completed - When you have verified the contents of your
package and consider the order completed. You can also change order status to
Received when you have received your package (but have not yet verified its contents
or there is a problem). The option to change order status on your Orders Placed
page appears when order has status of Shipped or Received. The myBrickLink action
item includes orders you placed where the order status is Shipped or Received.

While it might make sense that buyers should mark orders as complete, sellers
can do it too. BL help doesn't say that sellers should not mark them as complete,
and doesn't say that buyers should do it either.

Yes in an ideal world it works so, but many buyers - especially new buyers -
never change status to received or completed and do not post FB either. Therefore
as a seller you need to have the option to put an order in status completed -
and I guess - this will cause a line on buyers action items list that a FB for
an order is left to be posted.
I put many orders in status completed - about 25% of them actually. Normally
after one month within Europe and 2 months for worldwide buyers. Often but not
always will this result in a FB from the buyer.

I have tried to contact buyers that they have unfinished business when order
should have been received but I find this time consuming and quite often without
any result.

Why would the seller need to do this? What I mean is -- how does that benefit
the seller?

As a buyer, I use that field precisely as it is described. When I receive a package,
I change it to Received. When I have gone through it and made sure that everything
is there and good, I mark it as Complete. This can sometimes be quite a while
later. I don't want a seller going in there and changing it to Complete.

But why does that status matter to you as a seller? You know you shipped it.
You're done.

I guess enforcement is the problem. Is there a fair way to force a buyer to mark
the order as complete? Maybe if buyers were only allowed 20 open orders at a
time, or some other number, would it make people mark orders as complete? Does
it even matter? They could equally well just remove the option rather than leave
it as compulsory or as an option. If sellers can just file orders away without
them being complete, is there a purpose to it?

I don't see the purpose for sellers, no. For buyers, it's useful.

Unfortunately, you are completely wrong.
In addition to what Todd said, an order which a buyer has received, checked and
left feedback for can well be set to complete by the seller.

Btw. the OP refers to the payment status, not to the order status.
The payment status shows up if a seller selects to separately display order status
and payment status.
The payment status requires to be "Complete" to trigger the action item "Order(s)
not yet Shipped" in MybrickLink.
Payments sent through PayPal (Onsite) currently set the payment status only to
"Received" which does not trigger the action item.

Payments sent through PayPal (Onsite) currently set the payment status only to
"Received" which does not trigger the action item.

The problem is actually that it sets the order status to paid, which is a status
that is not normally available when you separate the payment status and order
status. This is what makes the action item not triggered. Even if you set the
payment status to completed these orders still won't show up as orders not
yet shipped. You'll have to set the order status to packed (or back to ready)
to make them show up in the actions items.

Sorry for not paying attention to followup earlier.

Yes I am setting "Payment Status" as complete. Meaning I consider the payment
done. Order Status remains at "Paid" as set by buyer completing the PayPal onsite.
However, this status combination does not cause the order to appear in "orders
not yet shipped".

I may see a payment, verify it is complete. I may defer work on packing/shipping
for some period of time (a few hours perhaps). Having the "orders not yet shipped"
link show on My Action Items is my reminder I still have work to do.

PS...it is possible for me to change the order status from Paid to Ready. But
this seems like going backwards.... However it does cause the order to show
in Orders not yet shipped.

Perhaps there is another way..... whenever a buyer changes payment status to
paid (by any means) that should show in my action items list.

It seems like a bug.
I would not set the order status from "Paid" to "Ready" as this opens the order
for additions. What happens if you set it to "Packed" instead?

Complete/Packed shows in "orders not yet shipped" just like Complete/Ready....
the issue is the one in between. Complete/Paid (Payments status/order status)
does not show in "orders not yet shipped"

Converting this reply to the "Problem" topic.

IMO it does not make sense at all to use the "Paid" status if payment and order
status is separated. Whoever programmed this PayPal (Onsite) feature either was
not familiar with the separation (and its triggering the action items) or desperately
looked for a solution to block order additions after payment is done. An elegant
solution would be to block order additions if the payment status was set by the
system to "Complete" after payment, regardless of order status. But this
may have required more programming work.

I don't want to stir the pot too much, but some people have seen that onsite
payments result in people apparently paying with eCheck. If that bug (if it _is_
a bug) is still there, having the system flip the payment status to "complete"
would not be appropriate for those eCheck payments. In those cases it should
go to "clearing" or somesuch.

Maybe the developer knew this and explicitly avoided "complete" to force the
seller to decide it is complete. Just shooting in the dark here (as most of us
do when it comes to figuring out how new features are meant to work).

Niek.

My understanding is that eCheck can happen when the buyer chooses to pay with
funds in their bank account, or the PayPal account doesn't have enough cash
in it.

So far after a couple of onsite payments both were normal, no eChecks. Had
eCheck's in the past from non-onsite payments. So unless there is some
other bug...it seems fine to me.

Niek.
