Interesting. Is there some way to mark that the part only appears in some editions
and not others?

Yes, and it has already been marked. Notice the match number (2) on the right
hand side of the page across from the tan technic brick lot (32000). You will
also notice the same match number (2) across from the light bluish grey 1 x 2
plate in the regular section of the inventory and across from the same plate
lot in the alternate section.
What this means is that one version of the set has 13 lbg 1 x 2 plates and 2
tan technic bricks. The other version of the set has 9 lbg 1 x 2 plates and 0
(zero) tan technic bricks.
This is common practice in BrickLink inventories. Another thing to check is the
change log for this inventory (links at both the top and bottom of the page)
and look at all the back and forth changes that have happened over the years.
It is also not uncommon to find a note at the foot of the inventory stating that
the set has multiple versions of instructions, but in this case a note has not
been added.
