| I'm intrigued by the concept of simple checkout on BrickLink whereby the potential
buyer is presented with the simple total of all costs of an order upon checkout.
Just like I can go to amazon.com, fill a shopping cart, and begin checkout to
see the total I will pay before I commit to an order.
It would appear such a feature is being developed for at least part of BrickLink.
From here: http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=656715
The other big issue for German sellers is the so-called "button solution"
that
German politicians have imposed on us. For non-German sellers, there's no impact.
For German sellers who are deemed to be "professional" sellers, the total price
has to be calculated before checking out and placing the order. This is a major
shift from Bricklink's model and will take some time to implement, but we are
working on it as quickly as possible.
I'd be interested to learn more about this. So if anyone working to develop
this feature can give some insight to how it might work on BrickLink, I would
like to hear it.
Assuming the feature works as intended, I would suggest that all sellers have
the option to subscribe to allowing Button Solution. Sellers could choose to
maintain their own shipping and fee structures. Or they could opt into the BrickLink
"Button Solution".

Admin is already considering this for BL 2.0. He has had dialog with some leading
German stores. I provided him with all of the documentation for our automated
checkout system in case any of it is useful to the redesign.

| This would be a good idea from both Buyer and Seller standpoints. Buyer can order,
know what he has to pay in advance and make payment immediately. Seller can do
away with majority of cancellations due to shipping costs too high, "oops, didn't
mean to order that" and other cancellations. Not to mention this offers the potential
to get paid a lot sooner. Only problem would be that there needs to be not only
weight taken into account, but physical dimension of parts too.
Be interesting to see how this all turns out.

I like the button option also but you are correct, how is it going to account
for boxes and packing. Since I primarily sell sets some boxes and packing can
account for 1-2 pounds of extra weight. And I have had more than quite a few
orders that were large and had to be split into two sometimes three boxes for
mailing. Great idea and would love to see it in Bricklink 2.0 but it would need
some serious testing, maybe some parts sellers and set sellers could be the participants.

I don't have first hand knowledge, but from my interactions with Admin, I'm pretty
conifdent that it will be tested extensively. The solution to the box size issue
is cubic volume. We already have this for sets (becuase we have dimensions),
but we would need to add a database field to the parts, gear, etc. catagories
so that the system knows how big something is. Interestingly, if you've ever
ordered from Lego PaB, you can see on the packing slip that they are using cubic
volume as part of their packing and shipping process. -Jason

I would even be intrigued if there was a simple solution that was mostly correct.
If a typical allowance was made for the order based upon known weight and sizes
I would think that would cover 90% of my orders accurately.
- For shopping carts that weigh
- For shopping carts that weigh 8 oz and
- When available (sets) use set dimensions + 1" on each side for package dimensions.
Calculate box weight based upon box size and add 4 oz for packaging.
Orders that don't fit these simple rules (so many parts they don't fit in a bubble
mailer, sets + parts mixed) are the slim minority of my sales. So if the vast
majority had a break-even to slightly profitable S&H rate, I would be willing
to risk a loss on the others. At least until savvy buyers figure out how to
game the system.

Not to mention every Postal service has it's own 'limits'.
When I look at my own country, it difers from my straight Neighbour-countries...
UK, The Netherlands, Germany, France... Everything is different if it comes down
to have a choice between 'envelope' and 'package'.
The primary choice would be for a seller to select 'mailer' or 'package' for
each item (then work on volumes and weights in accordance with local Postal services)
