| As discussed here http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=588148 I would like
to make a suggestion to be able to choose a 'trade' payment method, or even a
more advanced trading system where the seller has a drop down list of stuff they'll
swap for. Alternatively, I'd like to suggest the option to make your own payment
method, like with shipping methods. Please reply and vote if you agree.

You may be forgetting this is a for-profit commerce site. Any transaction involves
the use of system resources that cost money. Even the original owner, generous
as he was, would not devote any code to providing a function whereby everyone
could bypass attaching a monetary value to the transaction, or negate having
at least one side responsible for paying fees to the site.

That's why it's a suggestion for a payment method - one of the traders has a
store and the other uses LEGO as payment. BL still gets it's fees from the seller's
transaction.
Personally, I wouldnt implement this, as I'd rather selectively trade rather
than accept trades from any 0 feedback buyer.

Good point Ruth.
I think if trade were an option then we would see a great increase in underage
users.

Yes, it shouldn't be a payment method that the buyer selects, but maybe like
an item being reserved in a store.

Yes, I really wouldn't work if the buyer could choose it. Someone could tie
up your stock trying to come up with a trade that works for the seller. Working
it out and having the seller make it a reserved lot seems to be working fine.

I know. But your comment below and the others following are why I made the point.
The suggestion has come up many times before in various forms and never winds
up so simple as say, selecting that you will accept Paypal.

What about then, an 'other' payment method which could
a) Have a comments field for the seller to put what they want
OR
b) Have a text box for the buyer to add comments
OR (my preferred idea)
c) Only appears if the seller chooses to show it for a certain user(s), with
a comments field where the seller adds notes? It would be worth it to Bricklink,
as they'd still get paid fees. I've done a lot of trading on Eurobricks and Brickset,
and I'd much prefer to build up my feedback on Bricklink while doing it, and
wouldn't mind paying the whatever small percentage it is to Bricklink.

I've used trades many times. The problem with showing that as a payment method
is there must be a meeting of the minds BEFORE any inventory (from either party)
is taken out of inventory. You wouldn't want a buyer (any buyer) to come into
your store and check out with hundreds of dollars' worth of inventory, pick
"Trade" as the payment then send you an email saying he'll trade you a plain
minifig worth $2.00 for what he ordered. You can cancel, but you stock wasn't
available to other (real) buyers and you risk problematic feedback on top of
it.
Trading is fine; I had one just last week; as long as at least one party was
a "seller" to Bricklink can earn the fees it is entitled to. Trading can only
work if BOTH sides agree to terms before an order is placed.
