| I find it very difficult to input a cost per part or lot when parting out sets
on BrickLink. That is because I know only what the entire set cost me and do
not know what the prices for all lots or parts will be until after I have parted
out the set. What I would like to see is a BrickLink feature which would automatically
calculate and enter costs on the page where you finally confirm everything before
finally submitting the part-out.
The cost for each part would be calculated by a formula which considers (a) the
total cost of the sets (input in advance by the seller) divided by (b) the cumulative
part-out price, which is in turn (c) mulitplied by the price you listed for the
individual part. So for example, let's say you part out 10 sets which cost you
a total of $107.90 and the total cumulative price for those parts listed in your
shop is $175.88. Thus, if you priced one of the parts in that set at $0.07, BrickLink
would automatically determine and input your cost as $0.043(1)
Sure, you can go back and manually determine by hand or calculator the cost for
each part in each lot which you just uploaded. But that takes time, especially
since these new parts and lots are now mixed in with hundreds or thousands of
other lots in your inventory. It would be so much quicker and easier for BrickLink
to automatically do this when parting out the sets.
Thor
(1) $107.90 divided by $175.88 equals 0.6134864. Multiply this by $0.07 and you
get a cost of $0.042944 or $0.043.
P.S. I don't know if BrickStore or any other offsite software does this, but
even if it does, I would like to have this feature right here on BrickLink. I
do not like to rely upon any offsite third party functionality when listing items
for sale in my BrickLink shop.

Absolutely.
I'd like to see the allocation process be a bit more flexible, even than in your
outline. Yes, each part should get a weighed Cost based on how what fraction
it is of the total cost. But I want to be able to choose what is used for the
weight.
Like this:
Use the following values to determine cost allocation:
0 Average price of part in my store
0 6-month sales average
0 current item for sale average
If a price is not available for the selected option, the system will default
to the option below it. (For instance, if you select the cost in your store as
the default, but your store doesn't actually have that item for sale, the cost
allocation routine would use the 6-month sales average instead. If the part has
not sold in the last six months, it would use the current item for sale average
instead.)
I know that this makes the system more complicated, but this is one area where
I don't think that complication would be a problem -- the people who would use
this feature pretty much know what they're doing, and would appreciate as much
flexibility as possible.

I forgot to mention this part: BrickStore does not do this natively, but it can
be used to assist with the process. I use it for this purpose all the time, not
only when parting out sets, but when calculating My Cost for items that I purchased
on BL with the specific intent on reselling.
Perhaps we could even see a simpler version of the idea be implemented for this
smaller subset of reselling, as a way-point to the larger idea. BL already knows
how much each part cost in existing orders. Allocate the shipping (and other
fees) based on their contribution to the total, and assign that part a "My Cost"
which can then be immediately uploaded into your inventory.

| As long as there's a mechanism for updating/not updating the cost price of existing
lots that get merged, this would be great.
I part out at 6 month qty average, and modify the price from there. I'd like
the costs calculated/distributed on that price, not the price I sell at. But
the difficulty is what to do when there is no price available (this item has
never sold before); perhaps in this case the cost should be calculated from selling
price. So, on parting out the system suggests a cost price, with a chunk of
JavaScript to fiddle the fields where there's no price?

| This shouldn't be very hard to do; in fact, in theory, a Chrome or other browser
add-on could do the work as all the information except purchase price is there
on the screen.
This would greatly help tracking inventory value for tax purposes for the larger
stores, too.
I may even try to figure out how to write such an addon.
