Going through the building instructions there are only 14 of these brown 2x2 plates in this set:
page 3, step 3: 1;
page 4, step 5: 4;
page 9, step 16: 1;
page 21, step 34: 1;
page 22, step 35: 1;
page 23, step 5: 1;
page 25, step 37: 4;
page 26, step 3: 1.
Maybe someone else can confirm this.

Please take a look at the attached photo and let me know if the 1x6 bricks should still be listed as alternates when it seems that six of them are coming along with 4 2x6 bricks i the same box.
Picture shows the content of an unopened polybag from a new opened set (took me some time to sort them like this in the closed polybag).

Looking at the box it shows the ship with lamp and antenna on all sides but the front, very very strange.
You can also see it on the instruction that it should be in the set

Nice catch. But as you can see on the attached scan of the first page of my original
bulding directions the mentioned pieces are not part of the main model but were
only used for alternate builds.
So i think that the two pieces should be listet as EXTRA and not as REGULAR.

The quantity of this part has been changed from 8 to 7 in august 20008. But 8 is correct. As a proof i will attach scans of my original building directions. No.3 is hart to spot and may be the reason for the miscalculation. Or there are more than one version of this set. Does someone have a different set of building directions with only 7 panels?

Seems to me that there were at least two versions of this set. Look at the pictures of the common available scan from the internet and the hi-res scan of my original directions.
Instead of a 1x4 plus two 1x1 bricks it shows a singel 1x6 brick.
Further one of the 1x2 plates in trans-clear is in fact a light grey plate.

I bought this set 17 years ago and build it only once. So i am pretty sure, that the set came with two 6er axles and not two 4ers. Can also be seen in the directions last building step.

I have checked my original directions multiple times and my count of the above items seems to be correct.
The additional black plate is needed to build an alternate model of the ship as shown on the last page of the directions. Can provide scans if needed.
If there is any interest i can also provide a better scan of the front page of the directions. But i need someone who can tell me were to send the image.
