I got one used copy in a lot in which all sets were in perfect condition with
their box. Indeed, the same lot in which there were few space sets like 926,
a train 7715,...

The parts of this station 148-1 are in very good condition. Looks like they were
not played with. The door 33bc01 has hinge on the left. I don't know if TLG
produced and used both it depends on the set?

I bought this set with box and everything from Germany few months ago. I can
say the parts are original. Some are yellowed. And yes, all the light gray round
bricks were solid stud. Did the previous owner or owners replaced all 52 open
stud 3062b with solid studs 3062a? All the 52 copies of them? I don't know
if the submitter have an original copy of this set coming with light gray 3062a,
but I believe this inventory change request is correct.

The same AFOL mentioned about his set 310-3 that comes with the blue brick 1*2

I checked few used copies and saw both variants in different copies.

The situation with these vintage sets is complicated, specially when it comes

Awesome! How cool is that?!? A 38-year-old set inventory may be correct for the
first time ever!
I love things like this on BrickLink.

So do I.
Maybe the most popular train in 80s is 7745-1. With the help of few AFOLs, we
collected many photos of sealed and used copies to find out the inventory of
all variations (1985-90). At the end, I wondered how or why nobody else corrected
any of this before us?

I think this inventory will not change any more (unless minor changes like something
in the counterpart section,...)

The first variant has three hols on each end as it shows on the instructions.
It was used in starting 1993 for this set and 4547-1. In later productions, the
later variant with one hole on each end was produced coming with this set too.

The set you linked to shows proof for the one-hole version, but I do not feel
comfortable to add the three-hole version just based on the instructions.
At this time,
* | | 2972 Train Base 6 x 34 Split-Level with Bottom Tubes (Undetermined Type) Parts: Train Marked for Deletion |
is basically a catch-all entry since it can include both versions of the part
as the catalog note states. Therefore, the inventory is technically not incorrect
until the one-hole version gets its own catalog entry and this part gets marked
for deletion.
Any additional thoughts on this, Paul?
Randy
|
Hi Randy,
In my opinion, there is no doubt the three-hole was the first version and it
was used for both sets 4547 and 4549. The set 4549 was available in US only as
"shop at home" as far as I see in the catalogs which is why it is rare there.
If you check in some European markets, most copies come with 3-hole versions.
Let me share my thoughts on this one.
This piece is rare, appeared only in early releases of there two sets. If not,
then we should assume that TLG produced both versions since very early 1993,
used the one-hole version for 4547-1 (against the instructions) and the three-hole
version for 4549-1 and later, they used the one-hole version for 4547-1 too.
Then as most used copies of 4549-1 in Europe come with 3-hole versions, we should
also assume that their owners replaced the original 1-hole one with the 3-hole
version.
Here are two used copies. I also bought one copy from Germany coming with 3-hole
variant
https://picclick.de/Lego-System-4549-Container-Double-Stack-Road-%C2%B4n%C2%B4-Rail-153552552889.html
https://picclick.de/LEGO-Containertransportwagen-Container-Double-Stack-Set-Nr-4549-183867635295.html
It is possible to find an opened new copy of 4549-1 coming with 3-hole version,
sometime in the future but then, how can we be sure that this piece would be
original to the set as it does not come in a sealed bag?
I have ordered a light tent but I am not sure I have the one-hole version. I
need to check my second copy of 4549-1. But I can add it to the catalog and then,
you can decide on how to proceed with the inventory of this set.

* Add 4 Part 3242 Light Gray Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Straight
|
The source is from a NIB set sold on Ebay in Italy.
I have also seen used lots containing 4.5v sets+7822 and 4 extra conducting rails.
This set is advertised 4.5v in catalogs 1980-2 but TLG included 4 straight conducting
rails too so at the end, it was both working with either 4.5v or 12v layout.
|
I'm not convinced that this set would originally come with conducting rails.
It seems more likely that this seller would throw those rails in with the set
as a service for buyers who might want to use it with a 12V layout. I don't
remember my own set coming with these rails.
|
This is the only MISB set I have seen. I contacted the seller and asked him more
photos. He didn't know about Lego much and didn't have other train-related
staff. He was certainly not a Lego dealer, that I am sure.
We would never know if ALL copies contained these extra conducting rails.
The problem is that I cannot trust used lots at all as conducting rails are so
common and people have them. However, I attach a used lot containing only 4.5V
sets sold on Ebay in US where 12v train were not sold. We see 3 straight conducting
rails and there may be one extra (or maybe lost?).
I do have another set of photos of an NIB copy but the quality is bad and we
cannot see much.
|
I also point two things:
1) how did the seller know he had to add 4 extra conducting rails but they are
included in peeron, bricklink,...? why did he do that? I remember he did not
claim the set was complete. In the advertisement, he mentioned something like
"all bags are sealed. Not sure if complete"
2) The conducting rails have contact holes. These are produced between 1980-87.
But they came in two versions. The first version didn't have plastic reinforcements
below the notches (1980-84) but since 1985 they added extra plastic (to all types,
including straight, curved, cross, points,...). See
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1078534
In the photos we can see two conducting rails don't have reinforcements (the
other two are not visible). This is also why I trusted them.
|
Ok. Maybe you are right about these. But if we add these I think they should
be added as extra parts and not regular parts. They are not shown anywhere on
the box art or instructions. That would fit the definition of extra parts.
|
I am not convinced about this change request, either, but if we do end up accepting
it, they will most likely need to be added as Extra Items with an accompanying
Inventory Note.
Cheers,
Randy

Hi Randy,
I admit this is a tricky one. I recall the baseplate of 7838. I had seen all
used copies (about 20 maybe) coming with the version that has dot prints
[p=3811p010]
But I saw in the photos of store Bluxe a NIB copy coming with
I asked him and he said he had never seen or had 3811p010 in his collection.
But I still couldn't trust. Then, I saw a second NIB again from France coming
with 3811p010. This time I believe it. I bought the copy and it came with a catalog
from 1986 but the set was advertised in catalogs 1982-5. So, I think TLG ran
out of 3811p010 and used 3811 for latest production.
The 12v series were first released in few countries: Germany, Switzerland, Belgium,
Netherlands and Scandinavian countries in 1980. I have very strong evidence that
some sets like 7730 and 7750 were only produced in 1980 and then TLG stopped
producing them as they had already enough in their warehouse/shops. However since
the summer 1981, the 12v series were introduced in Italy, France and UK too.
in 1980, only few 4.5v sets like 7720-1 were available in the market of these
countries. So they produced more of some not-well-sold sets like 7822 and It
seems they re-purposed this
set to be 12V as they were no 12v station between 1980-82. Also, they were a
second run of production of 7730 for these countries (together with Germany and
maybe Scandinavian countries) as the strong evidence shows that this train was
not produced anymore for the market of Netherlands/Belgium. So this inventory
change request is certainly possible, regardless of the evidence I provided.
Anyway, this inventory change request is not very important. In case you reject,
we may still be lucky and find in future another new copy in UK, France or Italy.
Cheers,
Reza

Photos are courtesy of the owner of the shop "The Treasure Islan".
This is the very early rare copy of this set as the yellow-black sticker on the
lid says
"Constructional drawings on the back"
As far as I recall, the instructions are placed inside the flap cover in all
copies of technic series 85x.
In my own sealed copy (already sold), there were three gears
(I did my best to check the content from all angles and was convinced there were
only three, but my copy was sealed anyway). In this copy, there are four of them.
I requested to add the black gear
as alternate as this appeared in only few copies (the set was in market until
the end of 1984), similar to the inventory of the set

|
|
|
|
|
|
I have 2 of this set, one purchased while we were in Europe and another that
was purchased in 1994 at a ToysRUs in Texas. Neither had 12v conducting rails.
If this change request were to be presented at Rebrickable, we could handle it
with an alternate inventory version, giving members the option of choosing the
one that fits their actual set. Since this is not the case at BrickLink, adding
these rails as extras creates a problem for anyone in the future selling this
as a New Complete Set. Buyers would expect to receive the 12v rails, even though
the actual set may have been part of the original production run that did not
include them.
In other situations similar to this, BrickLink has included notes stating the
differences between early and later production runs. Perhaps a note stating
"Later production runs of this set included 4 12v conducting rails." would be
sufficient.

Always An Adventure!

Hi Thea,
Thanks for your input. This set was first released for few countries such as
Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden but in summer 1981, 12v sets enterred
in UK, Italy and France. It is likely that TLG added 4 straight conducting rails
in later releases. One way to check this is this part in red
They are used for this stickered assembly:
[p=BA17pb02]
It would be nice if you check this part in your copies. Are they 3040 or 3040a.
(I checked mine last year using a knife. I pealed off the sticker a little bit
and bend the two red slopes to see their bottoms. No damage was done to stickers.)
It is possible that your copies are the early releases.

It has been long time that I am thinking if these should be extra or regular
and still don't know what is better. But no problem if you put them in extra.
This set in new condition is so rare but if I see another one in the market,
I would try to check its content.

Two more comments:
- I don't know if the bricks 3002, 3003 should be kep as alternates or not.
I don't have any evidence for them coming in later releases.
- I had previously submitted a request for adding one red 1*1 tile as extra.
I gave a reliable evidence. My other inv. change requests were accepted using
the same evidence. But that one was rejected with no comment. I would like to
know why (and it helps me to know).

Hi Paul,
No I didn't forget. There are so many inv. changes, catalog changes, adding
items,...that I have plans to submit, take photos, upload them to my PC, and
then, upload them on BL. The only way I can handle all these is to do them step
by step, as my time allows me.
This NIB copy that I purchased should be from 1988 since the box is the first
version (1986-8) and the straight conducting rails don't have holes and have
reinforcements under their notches (1988-90).
I have never seen light gray hinges with solid stud with this set. I even have
one used copy that I bought from the first owner and was an early release too.
The (light gray) hinges with hollow studs were produced since very early 1985
