Considering that they are stoplisted, it probably should not matter any more.
The purpose of the stoplist is to stop them from buying from your store. It could
well be robots, but then it should equally not matter.

The proposed update has made me question the definition of a part.

The old definition: "Individual elements that make up a set."

The new definition: "Individual elements and assemblies used during the
process of building models." (emphasis mine)

The addition of "and assemblies" is significant. Under the old definition, parts
such as

Part No: 2878c02 Name: Train Wheel RC, Holder with 2 Black Train Wheel RC Train and Chrome Silver Train Wheel RC Train, Metal Axle (2878 / 57878 / x1687)
*
2878c02 (Inv) Train Wheel RC, Holder with 2 Black Train Wheel RC Train and Chrome Silver Train Wheel RC Train, Metal Axle (2878 / 57878 / x1687)
Parts: Wheel

Part No: 3680c02 Name: Turntable 2 x 2 Plate with Light Bluish Gray Top (3680 / 3679)
*
3680c02 (Inv) Turntable 2 x 2 Plate with Light Bluish Gray Top (3680 / 3679)
Parts: Turntable

Part No: 2429c01 Name: Hinge Plate 1 x 4 Swivel (2429 / 2430)
*
2429c01 (Inv) Hinge Plate 1 x 4 Swivel (2429 / 2430)
Parts: Hinge

should not even be considered "parts" in the first place because they are, in
my experience, never included in assembled form in official lego sets (other
experiences may differ, there being many official lego sets). However, the new
definition refers to "models" instead of "sets", so this implies that we are
no longer constrained by what is included in official, boxed lego sets. Where
do you draw the line between an assembly that is a "part" and one that is something
else? Should assemblies such as the ones above even be considered parts in the
first place?

I guess that loosening the definition of parts was needed in view of an increasing
number of parts that did not come in sets, like e.g. the BAM parts. The latter
never came in any set and they are also not necessarily assembled in a specific
way (like one particular minfigure).

We're considering the possibility of updating the page defining item types
on June 1st when we add the new category definitions.

Please take a look at the difference between the existing page:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=170

and the proposed update:

https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=2487

Are there any items in the catalog that still aren't addressed by the new
page? Put differently, what can you find in the catalog for which classification
by item type is still unclear when going by the definitions on the new page?

On the definition for figures: yes, I know that is very vague and could need
work.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Question: Will animals be now figures as well?

Please don't blame me for bringing up the following suggestion........balance in the FB rate.

I believe that once a buyer pays for goods, is when I should ALWAYS be giving
positive F/B, why wouldn't you, as their part is finished, without a problem

I give my F/B when I have finished picking an order, this way I do not have to
go back to see which order I am at, quite simple and takes up no time whatsoever,
as you are already on the order

Harry

It is so easy, I agree totally with you. It also gives a buyer a since of ease
when the leaves feedback. I also feel that a seller that does not has no faith
that they do everything correct. If a seller does what he should, why wait?
Or is the seller worried that "gosh, I am not that good, I better wait until
I see what the buyer does."

John P

I fully agree that if the buyer has paid swiftly without making any problems,
the buyer right away deserves positive feedback. But my impression is that some
stores do not issue feedback for the buyer until the buyer has given them positive
feedback, for the simple reason that in case there is a problem with the order
(shipment not received, missing parts, wrong parts), they still have leverage
over the buyer because they could issue negative feedback if the buyer does not
dance to their tune.

I do have some examples in front of me (genuine parts) that don't look at
all as Pearl Gold but do look as Metallic Gold. But the latter is not featured
as a known colour.

Can someone else confirm the existence of 3024 in Metallic Gold?

And if so, please add it to the catlogue as a known colour!

The Pearl Gold has shown quite some color tone variations. I have seen quite
a lot of such variations for different parts. I would think that the two 1 x
1 plates are such color tone variations.

Among the few chronic, but easy (I assume) site fixes, is:

The inability of the buyer in a transaction to apply order status changes i.e
received/complete, if the seller fails to mark the order as shipped. In my experience,
it only occurs occasionally but regularly.

It’s not a burning priority considering how long we’ve dealt with it, and also
considering all that’s taking place at the moment, but a nagging issue nonetheless.
Maybe at some point, a tweak or two could be made with the site’s code?

Thank you

Had that once with an order that did not get shipped. Was marked as Paid. Then
I issued NSS, good communication with the seller, problem solved, positive feedback
and everything good. But order status was set back to Pending after I removed
the NSS. And with this it still sits in my list. Would be really good if buyers
could change the status.

  Hello everyone,

Today I am very pleased to announce we have a new Catalog Associate! As you may
see from the Hall of Fame, StormChaser has previously held two catalog-type admin
positions - Inventories Admin and the legacy Catalog Admin - and has recently
returned to the site.

We're delighted he has decided to come back, and I know many of you missed
him as well. He has many ambitious plans for the catalog, and now that we have
more staff on board, it's looking as though we can start making some serious
headway.

So please join me in welcoming him. You can see his familiar profile in line
with the others here:

https://www.bricklink.com/memberAdmins.asp

StormChaser is also the first member to officially join our new Community Expert
Program. We hope to see the other catalog admins joining in the next day or two,
and the rest of our admins within the week.

Congratulations and all the best from me as well.

You sound like at this point you're willing to give up BrickLink's independence
for the opportunity to be ruled by the LEGO Group.

And yet in another message you don't seem to be fond of the idea of losing
BrickLink's ability to make independent decisions:

https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1167399

As for what they would say, the new color names are mostly TLG's own. What
do you think they're going to say?

As for

What they say will be correct !!

Do you genuinely believe that TLG is incapable of making mistakes? Are we to
now believe that every word they say is gospel and not to be questioned?

Look, I understand disagreeing with decisions. And clearly you disagree with
this decision. But I encourage you to retain your rationality.

There are two aspects to be considered in this color business: 1) useful and
meaningful choice of color names, and 2) consistency between different platforms
(which makes life easier for everybody, buyers and sellers).

I do not care as much for 1) as I do care for 2). The recent change has removed
some discrepancies between Lego.com and BL, but I am not sure what other platforms
will be doing. One should simply settle for any standard naming set (and I seriously
do not care which one it is) and then use it consistently on all platforms.

For obvious reasons TLG will not change their current color names. We are talking
about a company which operates on a global level and has production streams that
are distributed all over the world. Just think what happens if some color names
are suddenly changed to any of these production streams. This is simply impossible.

It is important to face realities and think about what would be the best for
the majority of BL users (sellers and buyers alike) in the long term. BL is not
some backyard garage run website project any more, but part of a globally operating
company.

As someone nicely stated it already: TLG is the manufacturer and they decide
how their product is called as long as they can sell it.

Could be, but then they renamed Medium Dark Flesh to Medium Dark Nougat, while
the official TLG color name of that one is Medium Nougat. So the outcome is more
fragmentation of color names.

Then you clearly didn't read Russell's message that started this thread.
SMH

So this has then been changed again from yesterday? Initially it was Medium Dark
Nougat. So much about this whole thing causing confusion. But indeed this is
better now.

I can't help myself from returning to this topic.

It is not right to erase people who have contributed to the catalog and turn
them into a meaningless number (and a username that rhymes with "loser.").

The first attached image shows people who have contributed a set inventory to
the catalog. For each person it was only one inventory, but it was time they
took out of their day or week to make a contribution.

The second image shows people who have added items to the catalog. One person
added 113 items. Another added 97 items. Yet another added 87 items. And so
on down the list.

Some of these unregistered users are no doubt dead. Some have moved on to new
pursuits. Some may be in a coma or in prison. Who knows why any one person
hasn't logged on or may never log on again?

BrickLink wants contributions. BrickLink wants an involved community. But when
BrickLink treats former contributors so dismissively, by erasing them into meaninglessness,
it makes me think they have no respect for contributors.

BrickLink contributors deserve better treatment than this. Anonymizing people
who have contributed to the catalog was a poor decision. It was a careless and
heartless decision.

I urge the site to reconsider the decision to anonymize any former catalog and
inventory contributors.

Actually the spokesperson from TLG stated that BrickLink wants contributions
and BrickLink wants an involved community. Let us take a step back and have an
objective look at recent actions and evaluate if this claim is meant as a true
commitment or not.

Great that it is now confirmed that this will indeed be a 32 x 32 baseplate.
So long ago that a white baseplate was available. Fits perfectly to this time
of the year, and the 32 x 32 size makes for a smooth integration into any city
layout (particularly great for mounting all the arctic stuff on proper baseplates).

While I champion the desired functionality change, I question the means to get
there.

The underlying catalog database needs to be reenvisioned from the ground up to
effect the type of change you suggest.

You've cherry picked one example out of hundreds where there is some underlying
catalog issue, so this is a piecemeal approach to a problem. The "solution" to
this one particular problem most likely will not be the same "solution" required
for some other element.

The database likely needs to be reconsidered to have these at least fields, probably
more:
- a part number ( e.g., 4085 )
- a mold variant value ( I'd guess three digits would do it...1000 variants
ought to handle it for our lifetime)
- a decoration value ( 7 digits would give 10 million possibilities)

This scheme would allow for
- 4085, 4085.1, 4085.2, etc.
- 973.1.0000001, 973.2.0000001, etc.

You could then WantList 4085 and have stores return 4085, 4085.1, 4085.2, 4085.3,
4085.4
or
Wantlist 4085.2 and have stores return 4085.2

...this is as opposed to...

The idea of a single field with 100 characters. It is too complicated and
too restrictive. This is the same problem we now have with the name/description
field. It is too short and populated too inconsistently for it to be useful.

You fail to present the interface side of the issue. At one extreme you have
grandma who wants to get grandchild a replacement piece to hold an antenna...and
she doesn't understand lego, and she doesn't understand variants, and
she can barely manage to navigate a web site to begin with. On the other extreme
you have the uberAFOLs who want to get extremely granular with the specifics.
The user interface for grandma is going to need to be decidedly different than
the interface for uberAFOLer. Grandma needs a drill-down; UberAFOLer wants a
dense form.

There are already too many "undocumented tricks" required to use the site search
as is. Needing to know to append an asterisk to the end of a search string to
return the variants is number one. Having to put quotes around search strings
is number two.

For matching wanted lists with store items: presume that wanted
list entries may contain a search pattern instead of a single
entry. Change the SQL from ‘=’ to ‘LIKE’ wherever necessary
or drop the quotes around the field. (But make sure
no malicious code may be entered through this field).

Statements like this...d'oh! Have a search field that's entirely open
for somebody to put whatever they want into it and at the same time don't
let them put anything bad into it. That's just way too broad an expectation
and impossible to code. With open search fields you have the problems of matching
strings, misspellings, punctuation, the frikkin' ampersand, and on and on.
Open search fields are, generally speaking, just plain bad.

The better solution is to make a search page with a series of checkboxes and/or
popups where you pick what you want from a fixed list. Potentially allow for
an open search box or boxes, but restrict a single search box to a specific
field within the database. Allow the user to also specify the boolean...whether
something equals (LIKE) or contains (LIKE%...%) a value or values.

Then there's the whole issue of having to explain to the user how to use
the search function or make sure it's simple and obvious how to use it...which
the current search function is definitely not.

All the elements of the database structure, data, forms (UI/UX), and programming
need to work in concert. You've addressed parts of some of these and none
of others.

Would your proposed change be helpful? Probably. But it's moot...at least
short term...because it can't be implemented in a useful way without a very
large amount of work. You have something here in embryo that's good/it's
not fully developed yet.

This all boils down to one important question: Will TLG as the new owner put
more resources into this site (i.e. more people)?

This picture is shown on all platforms, including Bickset and Brick Owl, and
also as you say in the LEGO online shop. The description however clearly identifies
the baseplate as 32 x 32 sized, and the price (identical to bright green and
blue 32 x 32 baseplates) matches with this interpretation as well.

It would have been quite surprising if a 48 x 48 baseplate would have come out
in a new color. Baseplates have become much more rare than they used to be.

  Hello,

While I favor buying other people's unwanted pieces, I always check the price
of each piece on "BRICKS & PIECES" (Lego website), in an attempt to avoid buying
on bricklink pieces I could get cheaper and brand new from Lego.

This is the reason why I would love to see in bricklink if pieces are available
on "BRICKS & PIECES", and at which price, without having to search.

Best regards

Right now, I do see both BL and B&P as complementary sources for new pieces.
Some pieces that came out very recently are considerably cheaper at B&P, while
at BL it may take a while for the prices to come down. Shipping costs for orders
from B&P within Central Europe are also mostly lower (except for very small orders).

On the other hand, many parts are simply not available at B&P, there is also
the 200 pieces limit, and prices for many standard parts that have been available
for quite some time are significantly lower at BL. Finally, specialized parts
like printed parts and minifigure parts from licensed sets are never available
at B&P. And availability of parts on B&P can change quickly.

So in conclusion, I think it is worthwhile to check both BL and B&P regularly.

My goodness why the focus on all de doom thinkers, now it sounds like everyone
assumes it will be terrible. That's neither correct, nor to our advantage.
I thought the replies to the news were really pretty balanced. We've seen
a whole range of different opinions and expectations. But I guess that's
how media work.

The answer to that is bad news sells, good news rarely does. It is, unfortunately
the way the world is. What a dreadful state of affairs that is

Sorry to disagree, but IMO* , there is no such thing as "the way the world is".
We all are making the world.

I once had a Belgian Buyer with a "me" page reading that he and his wife through
their 3 children all supported children in Africa. I dearly relate to that, I
support education for children in Africa as well, and my children will too, so
I wrote him He explainedme that the reason why he subscribed each of his children
to that program is that way they will grow understanding and being aware that
not all children in the world have the same opportunities they have. There is
no doubt in my mind that these children are going to be more sensitive to others
realities and less egoccentric.

We have to make the change we want to see in the world, to quote a poet.

I love good news, they sell to me. I spread good news. They sell to the people
I'm spreading. The bad, not really. Unless it is to allert to something potentially
nefarious.

I could go on with examples of playlists on the radio and tv shows, but maybe
some other day...

*There is no such thing as IMHO either, just political correctness

The only thing about this world what is just as it is are the laws of mathematics
and natural sciences. We cannot change what is predicted by that. But we can
change anything else.

And there is no scientific reason why there should be poor and rich, and no reason
why there should be war, why we should ruin this world, and why we should treat
other people badly. This is all up to us. To accept or to change or at least
try to change.

This inventory has been pending, unchanged, for at least a week. A review of
the pending inventory shows some printed parts still missing (but in the catalog).
There is no image for the "Central Perk" glass panel and the 1x4 "Service" tile
has already been added to the catalog. The only parts I can see that are still
missing (and still not awaiting approval) are the black 1x4x3 menu tile and the
sticker sheet.

Additionally the inventory still contains most of the minifigures parts which
obviously need to be removed. The Pearl gold cone listed is also the wrong variety.

It almost feels like the member doing the inventory for this set doesn't
have the set in hand: this should be a requirement, especially for an exclusive
set like this.

If an admin will release this inventory to me I will double-check it, remove
the extraneous parts, add the missing parts to the catalog, and have it ready
for approval today. I parted out five of these more than a week ago and have
been waiting far too long for the inventory to be completed!

The admin team discussed this situation behind the scenes and came to the decision
to release this inventory to you for completion. After some further research,
it was decided that this was the best course of action for this inventory. Good
luck!

Cheers,
Randy

This inventory is completed and ready for use. Thanks to the inventory admins
for the quick approval!

Thank you, very nice indeed. I am waiting for the minifigures from this set to
become available in greater abundance, because I like to populate my modulars
with this type of characters from licensed sets (admittedly this may not be a
purists perspective).

Should I just list them as 4070?

Thankfully, since there are so many headlight bricks with varying levels of partial
holes. It was definitely a manufacturing defect.

Now if we could just get rid of the ridiculous entries for "smooth slopes."

Why do you think that smooth slopes is not an appropriate entry? I actually prefer
textured slopes and when I order textured slopes and get smooth slopes it does
not make me happy.

I had enough of these in the last few weeks that waiting 2 full weeks is painful
to complete them.

I don't mind the 1 week to pay before it is started. But another full 7 days
to complete the NPB is not necessary.

I would propose 3 additional days and that is it. Let us get our stock back
in our stores to sell to someone else instead of being held at our will for 14
full days when 10 is plenty enough.

I can't be the only one that feels this way and 14 days might have worked
10-15 years ago when access to Smart-Phones wasn't as widespread, but these
days, you can't go far without having the ability to respond. Thanks

OK then in return I propose that we buyers can initiate and complete NRS and
NSS after proportionally shorter time. If sellers want to give us buyers less
time to make the payment, then they should also have less time to issue invoices
and ship. Something for something. As a side note, I would like to mention that
in Europe many payments are still made by conventional bank transfer, which may
take few days to complete (and will only be processed on business days).

Final comment: Sellers that want to push for high-speed payment should accept
the fact that for 99% of buyers this is a hobby whereas for a considerable fraction
of sellers it is a full- or part-time business. We buyers typically have a normal
job and need to find the time to do things related to BL.

As I’ve said, we’re not talking about a large discrepancy. I do have a single
s/h charge. It’s $4.99 for standard mail for any order size
which is closely related to actual cost on average. Minimum postage is $3.66
plus all associated fees/materials/etc.

And I would say that is fine, adding on a dollar or so for additional costs is
reasonable. And I imagine most buyers here would agree with that. I can see that
is the case, as a huge majority of your customers don't mention it, but one
has.

What you are proposing would ban that user from leaving poor feedback about shipping
costs. However, it wouldn't just ban users where the additional costs are
not too severe, but it would also ban users from leaving poor feedback where
the shipping costs have been massively inflated at the checkout for profit rather
than be based on realistic costs.

Remember not everyone knows the sizes of parcels, the cost structures of international
postal companies based on weight and size, the weight of the packaging a seller
is using, and so on. Sellers need to be believed that they are selecting the
right postal service for a package and are charging honestly for it. If buyers
cannot leave feedback about postage costs just because they already agreed to
them up front, then I imagine it would be abused. Sellers could make out a parcel
is large, charge for a high shipping band, then send it via a cheaper one and
tell the buyer they agreed to it so they cannot complain.

I prefer a feedback structure where sellers can be outed if they do wrong, even
if it means one person every so often complains about something when they probably
shouldn't have.

Does one neutral feedback in a few hundred damage a seller? No.

Does stopping buyers from commenting on whether they think someone is a fair
seller damage the marketplace? Yes.

Fully agree on this one. We must use common sense and reason. Reasonable buyers
will not complain about small things, like the little bit more expensive shipping,
the small extra handling fee, the little fee for packaging material and the like.
This will also extend to the conditions of parts and the quality of packing.
Of course there are the complainers which will always find something to complain
about. But I think they are a minority here on BL and it would be unreasonable
and actually way over the top if the feedback system would be changed just to
stop these few from posting unfair feedback. The feedback system must however
still leave a possibility to post a warning in case of the stores that really
make purposedly profit on fees rather than on Lego. This is a Lego marketplace
and not a fees markedplace.

  Hi all.

Suggestion ….

Feedback is not always left by the customer. Positive is left most times, and
a customer will always leave negative or neutral if there is something wrong.

One assumes that if nothing is heard from the customer, it must have been delivered
and was ok. Therefore - Can we have an automated positive feedback say after
2 months(or whatever length of time is felt suitable) of order being delivered
for all orders still showing as shipped. It could also be implemented if the
seller has not given feedback.

Thanks

Tracy

If feedback would be posted automatically, then we can abandon the feedback system
right away because it makes no sense at all. How can the system decide / judge
automatically if the customer was satisfied? For example, I am very reluctant
as a buyer to post negative or neutral feedback even when I am not too happy
with an order. In such cases I simply do not leave any feedback.

Dear Members of the BrickLink community,

as many of those of you who buy LEGO parts etc. on this site may know, for quite
a while the Buy Wizard (as invoked from a Wanted List) has shown a price comparison
for parts as percentages relative to the average price. This was visible when
selecting an individual shop from the results that were shown by the Buy Wizard,
and price differences were highlighted in green or red (indicating whether the
price of a part was higher or lower than the average price). In addition, a total
average difference (also expressed as percentage) was shown at the bottom of
the list.

This was in my view an extremely useful feature which made it possible to identify
particularly inexpensive parts from a sellers list or highly priced items. I
have used this feature in many cases, and for example have increased the amount
of parts ordered for relatively inexpensive parts and removed very expensive
parts from the list that I then added to my shopping cart.

Now suddenly this feature has been completely removed. I have initially suspected
this to be a bug, but E-mail communication with maintainers of the BrickLink
site has revealed that removal of this feature was intentional. This has been
done quite without notifying the community and without providing any reasons
or explanations. I do not agree with the removal of this feature and believe
that many users - especially Buyers - find this feature extremely useful. I therefore
request that it will be restored and ask for the support of the BrickLink community.

Best regards, Thomas
