yes, I saw them, but I'm not sure, if they are really the official ones which

And also... those prices are in euro, so... are they the european prices? If
yes, for which country. Cause the VAT can differ also per Country. Like Germany-Slovakia
have (I think) 1% difference in VAT.

They should be the original RRPs and the Euro price we show is the German price.

They are not errors as such. We only list those that have been published by LEGO.

Would love to have Bricklink add a new feature that would show the list price
for sets at their time of release when known.

The problem with MSRP is that you would need/desire to list all the MSRPs for
every market TLG sold the set. There could be dozens, and there is no guarantee
that any retailer actually observed it. When the NBA collector sets came out
in 2003, every retailer listed them for $5.99, excelptWalMart which went with
$7.99.

At one time brickset was listing MSRPs, but I don’t know if that is still true.

Yes it is: we show them on set details pages, under the 'prices' tab.

to make sets out of other parts that are already in my collection. I'm aware
that a way to do this already exists (go to a specific part and look up what
sets it comes in), but I feel like this will be an easier and quicker solution
and will help people a lot to discover what parts are needed. This could also
be expanded to exclusive minifigures, and who doesn't love exclusive parts?

It kinda works on brickset. On any set inventory page, do a text search for ‘In
1 set’ and see what you get. I use this to scan for new stuff when creating our
set inventories.

However, not all unique parts appear there, there will be duplicates from Lego
changing their part codes, and sometimes the data for older sets disappears.

It would be a great feature!!

Jen

There are also links at the top of inventory pages to show just unique parts,
or rare parts (in 5 of fewer sets)

me around $1,000 to have the catalogs professionally scanned, and I'm not
going to waste money like that without knowing the scans would have a home.

Sorry if I gave that impression. I would happily host them although I would not
advocate spending $1000 to have them scanned!

Unfortunately nobody has had success with this feature. Just continue using Brickset.
BrickLink’s “new and exciting feature” is 100% useless. Even if you do succeed
in the import, it automatically says your entire collection is “New, Sealed”
and you can’t change it.

Didn't work for me either. Errored, and imported less than half of the file.

I wonder if it's due to mismatched set numbers, which is always going to
be a problem when transferring data between sites.

Thank you. I don't envy you having to decide what's a figure and what
isn't.

Could someone explain why the mushroom in sets such as https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=71366-1
is not counted as a 'minifig'?

This is a good question, Huw. For most of BrickLink's history there were
no written definitions of figures and thus no criteria for categorizing them
or even what they were.

We're in the middle of trying to make sense of all that right now and the
Mario figures have been a good test of our standards and how well they work.

There is presumably some logic to it but, given it has eyes and appears to be
as sentient as the other two in that set, I'm not sure I understand why.

Although a mushroom is just an object in the Mario games, it is similar to what
we would consider a figure in this set. It has a scanner code like other figures,
a name, a face, and doesn't appear to be just an object. So this one should
probably have a figure entry on BrickLink.

Are the 'rules' concerning what constitutes a minifig explained anywhere?

Now there are, yes. They were created (not just edited/updated) a few months
ago:

Seems it does include parts that already existed.. not just the new ones..

The list linked to in the thread will show parts that have been added to set
inventories added to LEGO Customer Services in 2015.

If LEGO renumber old parts, which they often do, if moulds change slightly, for
example, then they will appear in the list.

I don't really have a strong preference about the catalog. I've uploaded a minimal
amount of info to it and don't really care how it gets used/abused. I'm just
trying to explain some of the rationale I have seen in these discussions previously.

If I wanted to champion the release of BrickLink catalog data, I'd start the
argument with BrickStore. That is oddly omitted from many of these discussions.

The catalog is, and has always been, freely downloadable:

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogDownload.asp

All of it.

With no restrictions placed on it.

By design.

Dan was always more community oriented than commercially oriented and believed
in freely sharing information to foster the community. Yes this may lead to
some use that we do not like, but that was the tradeoff for for the positives.

Brickstore would be one of the positives. It gives users the ability to do things
that Dan either could not or would not support on BrickLink. It was a winning
situation for everyone. Dan didn't have to provide features that only a small
subset of users wanted/needed. Members still got the features they wanted.
The author of BrickStore was able to make some money to defray the cost of producing
the software. The only negative is that the software is no longer being developed.
But in true community spirit, it is open source, so people can continue the
development on their own.

I believe that Brickset would also be a positive for all involved, depending
on how it is implemented. I believe that Brickset has a wider reach than Bricklink
in that it reaches people outside the core AFOL market. As such, it could only
drive more traffic to BrickLink, which makes BL more money and makes BrickLink
sellers more money. The only issue to be resolved would be how to compensate
Brickset for sending the traffic.

Any agreement between the two sites could stipulate that the inventory and parts
catalog information could only be used to link back to BrickLink and not to other
competing sites. Brickset maintains its own catalog of set information so it
would remain free to continue to link set info to eBay and Amazon. There is
also potential for information to travel in the other direction as well. BrickLink
could use set reviews.

Troy

I am encouraged by the generally positive nature of the discussion this time,
and thank you to everyone who's putting the case forward for allowing it.

I understand the concern about Brickset promoting eBay and Amazon, your main
competitors, but I'm pleased to see that many of you recognise that it would
be better for you if it were to promote eBay, Amazon AND BrickLink.

To clarify a few points:

- If Brickset were to display set inventories, they would not appear on any page
that also showed eBay or Amazon links at the same time.

- Links on image/part numbers would lead directly to the appropriate place on
BrickLink (whatever you stipulate that to be, the catalogue or for sale list,
perhaps)

- Currently, Brickset does not promote eBay or Amazon when viewing minifigs and
that would be the case for parts. Data provided by BrickLink would NOT be used
to promote anything other than BrickLink and would not be made available to 3rd
parties.

- There would be no stress placed on the BrickLink system by retreiving the inventories,
as it would be a one-off exercise when one was first requested by a user, possibly
refreshed every couple of months.

- There would potentially be an increase in requests for images from the BL server,
but arguably no more than if someone viewed the inventory after clicking on a
link to view it at BrickLink. In most cases users' browsers would cache these
anyway so any increase would be negligible.

My motivations for wanting to do this have been questioned in the past, often
with suspicion. Of course I want to do it to make Brickset a better website which
provides its users with more information. But, in doing so I believe it can make
for a more joined-up community which will benefit BrickLink as much as it does
Brickset. As someone pointed out earlier, Brickset's demographic is very different
from BrickLink's and many of its users do not even know BrickLink exists, or
are suspicious of it. There are several discussions in the forum where this has
been raised.

Finally, I have a working prototype showing how I would like to integrate BrickLink
inventories into Brickset and I can make it available for testing to anyone that's
interested. Drop me an email (huw@brickset.com) with your Brickset username.
(I wrote all the code to do so a few years ago but have never made it publicly
available)

Thank you for reading this. I welcome your comments. I would also welcome knowing
who ultimately can make a decision to allow this.

Thank you for discussing this. My previous efforts to do so have usually ended
in tears so I'm not going to pitch in on this thread unless I can answer any
questions.

I sincerely hope you, as a community, can see the benefit of displaying the inventories
at Brickset (most of which have been mentioned in this thread already) but I
will of course respect your wishes should the answer still be no.

I think this is an great idea.
I'm a frequent vistor to the Brickset website and I think it's an excellent site,
providing a lot of information free of charge for people to make good buying
decisions.

There was a discussion in there forum recently regarding using Bricklink to build
discontinued sets such as cafe corner etc. and what surprised me was the number
of users who hadn't used or heard of Bricklink before and where now going to
give it a go.

Bricklink's two strengths are parts and discontinued sets. Having Bricklink integrated
into the Brickset site would make it an easy choice for people that want parts
as there's little competition here. And with discontinued sets, I would expect
Bricklink sellers with their fine reputation and lower fees to be able to compete
strongly with with Amazon Marketplace and ebay sellers. At the moment unless
people already know about the Bricklink site we're not even getting a look in.

I don't know much about the technical side of integration, but as an idea I think
it's a good one.

James.

In Suggestions, DadsAFOL writes:
This is based on this thread: http://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=128729
that discussed this idea in general. There were no opinions posted opposing
allowing non-retail, non-competitive sites to link to and refer visitors to BrickLink
stores.

I have no conflict of interest in Brickset. As an independent seller, I'm simply
proposing another way to draw traffic to BrickLink.

This suggestion would enable Brickset to 1) display the BL inventory detail and
part pictures for any set, 2) link from the parts to the BL catalog page for
that part, and 3) provide links to stores with those parts for sale on
BrickLink. Brickset would sell link placements similar to the existing Peeron
business model. Orders on BrickLink would show the "Referred by www.brickset.com"
message on the bottom of the order detail.

Per the discussion in the other thread, this suggestion applies only to this
one site. Other sites would need separate forum suggestion threads.

If you have a comment relating to a Brickset relationship, post it here.
If you have a general comment about the concept, please post it to the
original thread.

Thanks. -Jason

Perhaps you need to explain this more. My understanding is that this suggestion
is for a link on these other sites that would send buyers to BrickLink. Those
buyers could be tracked as coming from those referring sites and compensation
may or may not be payable to the referring sites for such referrals. Is this
correct?

That is correct.

I am not against this suggestion BTW. I am still undecided. What concerns me
is why BrickLink would have to pay anything to these referring sites, especially
if there is a reciprocal link on BrickLink which would refer BL members to those
other sites (like BL already has for Peeron, TBB, BrickSet and others).

In Brickset's case that is true and in all honesty I don't require or expect
payment to continue to link to BrickLink. In fact, I am trying to increase the
number of links I provide to BrickLink (by using and displaying BL's set inventories)
but, because I also link to eBay and Amazon, as an affiliate, there has been
opposition here to me doing so.

It's particularly frustrating because I found this site, http://www.toysperiod.com/,
which is blatantly ripping off BrickLink's pcitures and inventories e.g. compare
http://www.toysperiod.com/lego-set-reference/space/space-police-2/lego-6957-solar-snooper/
with http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=6957-1. There are no links
back here that I can see and it even watermarks the pictures as if they are its
own!

If there was an affiliate framework then as part of that there'd be agreements
between publisher (e.g. me) and advertiser (i.e. BL) which would lay out the
terms under which the advertiser's assets could be used. At the moment there
aren't any. Some sites, like the above, rip them off anyway. I had the courtesy
to ask first only to be refused by some people.

Furthermore, if BL does not already do this, I think any other site (e.g. BrickStore)
which freely uses BL assets and resources (such as BL images, inventories, Price
Guide data, etc.) MUST - as a condition to that free use - include a prominent
link on their website referring people to BrickLink. If some already do then
how is this different than the affiliate program you are suggestion?

Agree entirely, but the conditions under which other sites can 'freely uses BL
assets and resources' is not clear.

Please educate us and maybe this idea will have more support. Right now, all
some people read and react to are the comments saying there might be additional
fees for implementing this feature. If this fear is overblown, explain it to
us.

It doesn't have to be that way: eBay and Amazon do not charge sellers more if
their items are sold through affiliates: they take the hit.

Personally, I don't think an affiliate scheme would work here due to the nature
of the business model unless 'BrickLink inc.' took the hit, which probably would
increase fees across the board. As I said before, I only jumped on this thread
because if it did have one, some of the blockers that I've come up against would
have to be removed.
