Wouldn't it be nice and very useful (and logical) if you could add a recent
Bricklink order you placed to your collection? Sure!
But you can't.
TWO
OK, I'll try something else: the import function. I downloaded my recent
orders as a XML and CSV. Now I can add all those parts to my collection!
Unfortunately, you can't, it just doesn't work.
THREE
^ I see, too bad. But let's try a wanted list. You can download a wanted
list as XML file. Now I upload this to my collection, easy peasy lemon squeezy,
right?
Oh my, it won't import.
So what's left of this feature?
Nothing.
What you can do is part out a set to your collection. It does it quickly,
hooray! But then? All you get is a list of parts (maximum 200 per page) but you
can't do anything with it.
You cannot:
- sort
- search
- add notes about location
- perform any other operation upon the items in your collection
The only thing you can do is binge watching your parts. I have around 131,198
parts in my collection (according to Rebrickable, a great site!). And this is
only from sets I own. I own another 200,000 parts from Bricklink orders (rough
estimate).
Basically it comes down to netflixing / binge watching your parts. 200 per page,
300,000 parts divided by 200 is 1,500 screens to watch. Click next screen. Click
next screen....
For some reason I get the idea that Bricklink, owned by the largest toy company
in the world - which we all love, otherwise we weren't here - doesn't
take us seriously.
My hands are itching to offer myself as a software developer at Bricklink but
I'm afraid I have to talk to that nephew of 11 year old.
Sarcasm included, but really....

I agree with a lot of your points. There's really good potential in a My
Collection feature that just isn't being realized yet. But all those functionalities
probably take a long time to develop. Especially when integrating with something
like purchases. Let's not forget BrickLink's "Spaghetti Code" handicap.

It is for data mining. Anything that has been done here recently is only for
data mining, you are being used to gather data and then that data will be sold
to "partners."

It’s 200 lots per page. You don’t have 300,000 lots. Most likely 5,000

hours at a time before needing to go to something else.

So you're doing 2 actions: picking the bricks to separate the bricks, then
picking them again to separate 2x4s and 2x2s, etc.
We directly sort every different lot, it's more efficient IMHO.
But of course I'm talking about sorting bags of Sets. Not the case where
you sort a 20lbs Used bucket...

The category can be customisable, you could totaly make one with only the 2x2
bricks in shades of blue that is not in regular blue.
|
This and so many other things.
The problem is not imagining or selling an auto sorter.
It's to build it and make it:
* smart enough (recognition)
* be reliable (same results)
* be fast enough (1 part per minute, is it worth?)
* be worth economically (1M$ cost, or a whole night of 500W power for 100 parts?)
* use the less space possible (a whole room ?)
* fixable (plans, tools, source of parts, 3D prints ?)
* updatable (software, database, parts catalog ?)
* not harmful (230V hazard, finger pinched, emissions, kids!)
Then comes the distribution. Will you provide "open-source" plans and software?
Will it be sold? From a Company? Warranty? Regulations on electrical apparels...
and so on.
But good luck - just make a prototype!

I agree with, when i said that i was thinking about, regular brick, slope, inversed
slope, panel, chain etc..., anyway the sorter will probalbly have lot of problems
with printed parts, because there is a lot diferent and, for example, if the
head do not face the phone, the ia could only make theories.

Hmm, it seems to me that middle sizes are always more problematic.
I mean:
— If you don’t have many parts to sort, you can sort and store directly in one
move.
— If you have 10x of the same set, you can sort “by bag” in a smallish temporary
storage/area and then empty/move the lots in your final storage.
— But if you have only 1 of a 1000 parts / 200 lots set or unbuilt MOC, you can’t
sort and store directly and you need too much space / temporary storage to store
the 200 lots.

You might want to rephrase/expand on that because it sounds like “The gall of
them! We give them a job and they want a break after merely 8h!”
Or maybe it’s all the posts about the Eiffel Tower that put the 19th century
in my mind

The sorter could easely sorter 4000 parts overnight, but if you do that you'll
need to use box that have a the right size. If the problem is choosing a category
for every lots, i think i could add the option to use the basic bricklink categories.

Categories? It's worth nothing mixing all Minifig heads alltogether. The
sorting is only interesting if it differentiates every different lot.

Not necessarily. When sorting out our pieces, they are first broken down into
40 or so different categories. After that, we then break them down to individual
pieces then color and decoration. The first broad sorting is very monotonous
and it's hard to find employees who can handle doing it for more than a few
hours at a time before needing to go to something else.
A machine that could accurately organize into the 40 categories would be interestin.

+1 it took myself with several helpers about half a year to do the first sort
(something like 1500 pounds) we had to do before I could even start listing anything

So you're doing 2 actions: picking the bricks to separate the bricks, then
picking them again to separate 2x4s and 2x2s, etc.
We directly sort every different lot, it's more efficient IMHO.
But of course I'm talking about sorting bags of Sets. Not the case where
you sort a 20lbs Used bucket...

setup earlier (manualy or from bricklink category for example).

Me too I had this dream, no problem. Just do it?

So you see saying it will automate putting the parts into specific locations
into a storage system of 5000 bins - that is, the storing rather than sorting

yes, but there no point to have the storing without the sorting, same for having
5000 bins unless you want to have a bin for prety much every single type of part.
I'd rather imagine someone put drawers (see the picture) in the right place
around the sorter, let the sorter make his thing and then take off the drawers
and put them in there cabinets.

Frankly?
There are tens of those projects to be seen on Youtube; some ar already advanced,
but still not usable.
What you're showing is a general idea and a price.
Unfortunately, it's very very more complicated than this, and your prices
are way way off.
If you wish to sell 500$ a device that can differentiate bricks from technic
axles, slowly, why would anyone buy it when they can do it far faster and for
free?
Factory sorting machines are more around 100K or 1M$ worth, and they are fast.
I don't support collecting this kind of form with data especially for such
a vague project.
Maybe try to build and use one, and in a couple of years open a kickstarter with
real/actual results?
Wishing you the best!

Also, you could also upload the list of the part you sorted ovenight directly
in your bricklink inventory.
