The title explains it all.
A lot of minifigures sales data are influenced by the fact there are people selling
them without a part. I would like to have the same option sets have.

Last 6 Months Sales price for NEW reflects all NEW items, so also the incomplete
ones. This is a huge perturbation of the real average price for NEW SEALED sets
and should IMHO be fixed asap.

E.g. 75978 Diagon Alley shows an average of +/- 185 euro for NEW.

Why not just click the EXCLUDE INCOMPLETE box.

I agree with the OP.
The default for every user should be the COMPLETE and the box should show "INCLUDE
INCOMPLETE".

As is evident from many forum posts as well, many fresh buyers don't even
know what a "lot" is supposed to mean, let alone they will understand the concept
of minimum average lot value.

I agree. It's been a reoccurring expressed confusion for some time.

Start with a more concise definition of the term "lot" and it's specific
applications for both buyer and seller on BL.

I also like your idea of suggestions as examples in a popup window. Examples
tend to paint picture in our minds for a more visceral understanding, and why
we use them.

I would rather BL take this away altogether. You already have minimum buys to
avoid small orders, you can already set a minimum lot quantity for purchase.
Why give an impression that an item can ship by itself, when you as the seller
is not willing to sell it like that? It confuses buyers when sellers willfully
shows prices for goods they are not willing to sell at.

That doesn't always help though.

If a store has a $10 minimum and a $1 lot average, then a buyer can buy a $10
item plus another 9 1c items and checkout.

If they have just a $10 minimum, then another buyer can buy 1000 different 1c
items. What a terrible order to pick. Of course, a seller can bag those 1c items
up to sell in quantities of 100, with a $10 minimum. So now a buyer can buy 10
bags of 100 parts but hav no choice to buy less if that is all they need.

But what if the buyer only wants one cheap item to go along with their expensive
part? They are forced to buy 100 of the cheap part even though they only want
one, or not buy that part at all.

I have a minimum lot value and a store minimum but I frequently sell low numbers
of cheap parts to those people that are also buying more expensive parts. I don't
mind those orders. However, I don't want orders that are for many different
low priced parts, even if they meet the order minimum. The minimum lot value
stops those.

Trouble is, I wouldn't use it if it wasn't necessary - I just get flooded
with tiny lots if I don't use it. My pay per hour would make a huge drop.
In my own webshop I am not able to set such a minimum, and sometimes that really
gets me the "order from hell" that sucks up all the time of the day that I planned
to use for 10 other orders on my list, for only €50 pay. Not fun for me and not
fun for the other 10 buyers.

Not fun or particular good use of time for a buyer to sit for two hours and still
cannot checkout either. I've had some of these where I sit for 30 minutes
and then go what the hell, let me buy everything in the store. Then I still cannot
checkout, because I still have not met the minimum lot average. I agree you need
a happy medium, but your pay per hour is dependent on your selling price less
overheads, not on buyers seeing listings at prices you are not willing to sell
at.

On the one hand, I fully understand that from an interface point of view it is
not really good (you do not get immediate feedback), on the other hand it's
simply necessary for me to do business. So we best look into ways of making the
interface help out as good as possible.

On the balance of averages, does it help when buyers contact you and you explain
it to them better than BL does? In other words, do you close the sale to that
particular buyer once you have answered his question and do you get a return
for the effort you made to assist the buyer to checkout? Or do you never hear
from the buyer again?

Rather suggest, if sellers really want to use this, that the quantities the buyer
wants cannot be added to the cart unless the minimum average is met automatically.
That way the cart is managed for the buyer and nobody has to know the why and
the wherefores of why an item cannot be bought for the price it is listed at.

Good suggestion, can't really decide right away whether this would be good
or bad, but it's definitely good to write such ideas down and investigate
them. (I guess the downside would be that your first lot immediately needs to
meet the criterium, which is unfortunate if you came for a small plate but also
plan to add a minifig).

Then your terms were not read

A colour marking in the cart of which lots are below
the threshold might also help.

Possibly, as long as the buyer knows immediately that there is some difference
and do not like, at present, either have to keep a running total in the head
or toggle between the store and the cart incessantly. In countries like my own
where data is expensive, this adds insult to an already horrible shopping experience.

Whatever improves the interface to make the buying experience more positive,
I'm all for it, so it's good to keep these ideas coming.

But that would lead to other problems. Like Teup wrote about the first
item has to be over the minimum average. And the orders real minimum average
isn´t calculated until the buyer has filled the cart with all the things he/she
wants so having a block on adding lover priced items, and without explaination,
will cause even more frustration. The only way around that suggestion is to make
the buyr add the items in the "right" order - most expensive lot first and downwards
until they´re add the minimum average limit, a block there would work. But it
seems highly unlikely that it is an easy and good way to solve the "problem"
at hand.

Very true. Maybe an alternative is to have a warning sign like a red triangle
with a ! in it in the cart to show that you will not be able to checkout with
the current cart if you do not meet minimum order values, minimum lot values,
and so on.

Walk into store to buy bread, get to till, no you MUST buy 1 kilogram of fillet

the bread costs, which is the only thing you need. Leave bread, walk out.

It does not matter how good you explain it, buyers do not understand how you

must put in a cart before you can, well, pay for it at checkout.

Sound like fun to put items on auction.

Please also make Dutch auction possible.

Maybe add suggestions: "Try increasing the quantities of some items in your cart,
add a more valuable item, or remove some low value items from your cart."

Thanks, Judith!

btw, my daughter and I were just yesterday, talking about Rhode Island's
fall foliage.

Are you looking forward to it, next month?

Found this photo looking up what this year is projected to be like

I'm not so sure it will be colorful in RI this year. We, like the west coast,
have been classified as Extreme Drought conditions. So I think it will be an
early leaf drop with lots of browning. It is downright crunchy here - I gave
up on my gardens. We need rain!

My expectation is that this is the exact type of item that sellers would want
to sell via auction.

The other is bulk lots.

Marketplaces should be designed to minimize transaction costs. Depending upon
the nature of what is being sold, different marketplace structures accomplish
this. (Note: the casual economist might not realize that transactions BELOW
the highest price are a type of transaction cost.)

Auctions work best where the market is thin and the true market clearing price
is difficult for a seller to intuit. There is no need to auction bulk white
bricks. There is an absolute need to auction a store display from the 70's.

I would argue that most Buyers of hard-to-find or unusual items are already visiting
Bricklink regularly. Public ignorance of Bricklink may cause inexperienced sellers
to list on other sites, but Bricklink would immediately become the premier auctioneer.
Once that happens, Buyers will be able to spend less time searching.

And Bricklink might make a few extra dollars.

A quick note on the argument against this suggestion: Auctions required more
administrative time than the (much smaller) site could devote. FleaBay's
fees are much higher than Bricklink's. I would not be surprised if the fees
for auctions needed to be higher. That is also a transaction cost, but Sellers
who felt it was too high could always just list the item the same way that they
do today.

I voted "Yes" when I saw this. Turns out, I was just repeating my actions from
the distant past.

From what I can recall, the auction system discontinued due to a huge added administrative
burden. It was popular and had a lot of potential. Eric should consider hiring
a small team to restore, develop, and maintain the system. If necessary, there
could be higher fees, or tiered fees, in the auction format to make the concept
worthwhile. I think the BrickLink community was fairly unanimous it its disappointment
over losing the feature, so putting it to a vote won't prove much, just reiterate
what is already known.

I miss the auctions too ... although I do recall the reason for their being discountinued
as lacking support and following Flea-bay's lead in going to fixed price listings
... can't remember if it was Dan stating his rationale or not ... as a man of
mystery he didn't often say why he did things the way he did

True, a major part of the reason he discontinued it was its *lack* of
popularity. The relatively little use the feature got didn't justify the resources
allocated to it.

Hahaha and 111 months later ...

I don't know about pouring soap directly on unsubmerged parts. I had bad
results with that in the past. It leaves a film on the parts that is pretty difficult
to remove unless you scrub it off. I like to use a lot more water and dissolve
the soap before dropping the parts in the bin.

As now you can know how many items and lots you have with a certain remark.

I think it would be super useful also to know the total value and mycost of all
items filtered by a remark research.

For now I have to download the inventory in excel/calc filter by remark and make
a sum function.
That's a lot of time.

Thanks.

There was no decision, btw. This has always been the rule, but we're finally
getting responsive enough with the admin team to start enforcing it.

so why not simply change the listing to used instead of deleting and leaving
a notice ? ...

That's an excellent question. I think it mostly has to do with how the system
is currently set up, as we don't have that option when handling these requests.

But it also might be that some sellers do not like the idea of admin tampering
with their inventory and making choices for them. We have had one person mention
that they don't want to list them as Used, because they are concerned that
a "used sticker sheet" carries some negative overtones they wouldn't want
on display in their store.

Before deleting an item listed for sale, please give a notice to the seller.
That way the seller can change the listing to comply with the rules (instead
of having to enter everything again).

The e-mail does not give the full listing details, so it is not always clear
what is wrong with the listed item. Also the reason given is not clear.

I just recieved an e-mail stating that a few stickers I listed are deleted.
Reason given: "Item is incorrectly defined as New/Used or Complete/Incomplete/Sealed"
It concerns a few incomplete sticker sheets. I have more incomplete sheets listed
and they are not deleted or mentioned in the e-mail.

Is it wrong to list incomplete sticker sheets as 'new' (with a picture
of the actual sheet and clearly stated in the comments that it is incomplete)?
The stickers still on the sheet are new (never used).
Just to be save I changed the remaining incomplete sticker sheets to 'used'.
And I will re-list the deleted items as 'used'. Hopefully I can still
fing the pictures of the deleted items.

Sticker sheets missing stickers must be listed as Used.

Why can't partial sheets be sold as new, but indicating incomplete? After
all, it happens a lot with minifigures, even though parts are missing and there
is no formal incomplete setting.

totally agree!!. I just got a sticker sheet removed that is a rare large one
from idea book 250....meaning long ago. It was missing one small sticker. The
rest was mint. This to me is New/Incomplete which is how I listed it. It for
sure is not used. Used brings up images of wrinkled, cut, stickers taken off
and put back on the sheet. Stickers missing one sticker or more is not used.
It is incomplete. Lately stickers coming out of new boxes are wrinkled or have
a sticker stuck to the instruction book. These were still considered new but
incomplete.
This was a bad decision.

Just open a shop, set the minimum buy to sixty quadrillion dollars

You can then browse your bricks & sets in peace (or you can rule the galaxy if
you actually have the stock and the right buyer)

Other options are just to close the shop or put the bricks/sets into your stockroom

It's quite easy to use BL as a personal inventory catalogue

Cheers,

Ole

You're not the first, Steve, wanting to see something along these lines implemented.
The general idea is brought to the forum from time to time, the suggestion has
merit.

Who knows if something is ever implemented at some point, perhaps a third type
of account could be created? But until it’s realized (if ever) you could simply
upgrade your current buyer account to seller. I'd venture a guess that there
are a good amount of seller account holders that have never made a sale, and
some that never intend to.

Websites as Rebrickable.com and brickset or the Brickstock program have these
features.
You can always upgrade your account to seller and keep the store closed.

Maintenance has to happen at sometime. Given the redirection has to happen from
a requested URL to a the maintenance URL - https://www.bricklink.com/oops.asp?err=dailyOffline
- could that URL encode the original target, so a refresh will execute the request
at 4pm, once the site's back up? Better yet, include an automatic, timed
redirect so I don't even have to manually intervene.

Or should I move to a less inconvenient timezone? Would that be easier for you?

I find it hit when I am doing my mailing as well (after work and kids are in
bed). I have found that after the site is back up, if you use the back button
in the browser, it usually goes to where you were and can then continue. For
instance, when adding inventory and you click th last button and it goes to the
maintenance page, if you go back then click the add to inventory button, it adds
the items.

My suggestion is to please make an effort to encrypt e-mail to recipients wo
support it, for example by looking up their public key in a well-known key server
(such as keys.openpgp.org, the default of the enigmail add-on), or just by adding
an option to upload one's public key somewhere in the My Settings page.

If you need this level of security, you may wish to consider using an address
other than where you live.

If a seller were using an order management app, that used the BL APIs, does that
data cross the wire encrypted ?

Yes, the BL API is accessed through "https" connections.

I highly doubt this will get implemented. If you are worried about this info
reaching you in plain text, you can opt to disable messages-to-email and only
use the BL messages. That won't do anything for emails with your info going
to the seller, but then again your proposed change won't help there either
as _very_ few sellers will use OpenPGP or similar.

That is highly variable. If the recipient is using POP3, then I agree that there
is exposure. But using an email client, which makes use of HTTPS, and which is
being transported across an encrypted cellular link, then WPA2, should provide
some protection.

Perhaps a PGP encrypted orders download, as an alternative to email distribution
? The existing email layout has not substantially changed since 2000 (when I
was on 56K modems). There should still be a minimal email notification, but how
much information is present might be a starting point.
