So there is an inconsistent approach.

Nevertheless, we need the ability to display and use inventories in different
ways based on the needs of the person viewing that inventory. You don't
think so, because you want inventories to be structured in the specific way that
you feel is best for users of the site.

Why not just agree with me that inventories can do more than the system currently
allows and join me in the push for customizable inventories?

This feels like a false choice. Of course we would all like to see greater convenience
and functionality, but that does not mean we should allow information and functionality
to be removed now in the hope that someday we'll have a system
that lets us put it back. How about we use the existing functionality,
which will support all the information people want, including the full box contents
as they were packaged as well as the parts that form a "complete" set, and then
when (if) those extra features come along we can talk about how to use them?

Because we have put the cart firmly before the horse, here. There are thousands
of complete set listings right now that do not include all the parts Bricklink
says they should - some of them quite expensive parts. This is not due to any
error or wrongdoing by the sellers. It is purely the result of inventory changes
that have been made to accord with bad policies. I don't hear anybody really
defending that. I'm not surprised, as it seems indefensible.

Yes, the OP is correct, but for the wrong reason. The inventory would still be
"correct" even if the instructions only showed the two darts that can be held
by the model, because there are three darts in the parts list. The parts list
determines whether a part is extra or not, and not the building instructions.

Bricklink set inventories are not based on the building instructions at all.

That is absolutely false. From BrickLink guidelines for what should be included
in the Regular Items section of an inventory:

"Parts required to build the main model and any secondary models plus
any other parts on the official parts list. In the absence of an official parts
list, the official parts count, the instructions, and/or images on the packaging
are used to determine as closely as possible the contents of this section."

  In Inventories, 62Bricks writes:
The printed parts list is the only thing that matters.

That is absolutely false. From the Standards for Inventorying a Set section,
which explicitly states that the source of an inventory should be a physical
copy of a set:

You have forgotten to boldface plus any other parts on the official parts
list.

Since there will be no parts in the building instructions that are not also on
the parts list, the parts list is all that matters.

"You should have a physical copy of the set you are inventorying to properly
identify the parts and colors. When this is not possible for old or rare sets,
then it is acceptable to use the instructions, set picture, or parts list (sometimes
printed on the box or in the instructions) to complete the inventory."

I hope the following sentence clears the confusion:

BrickLink inventories are based on what actually came in the box or bag.

Parts lists have errors. Set photos have errors. Building instructions have
errors. You like the idea of simple, straightforward, commonsense guidelines,
Don. Well, the sentence in bold text above is as simple and as sensible as you
can possibly get and you should applaud this if you stand behind your principles.

As I have pointed out elsewhere, packing a lot of vagueness into a short statement
does not make it more simple. "Based on" is the slippery term, here.

You are playing fast and loose with the definition of "inventory." The discussion
here is not about the complete inventory page, but in what section the parts
appear within that inventory. Nobody disputes that if three darts came in the
box, three darts should appear somewhere on the inventory page for the set. However
as is demonstrated by the existence of this thread, there are many people who
have come to understand that the regular section represents only the parts included
in the building instructions. For purposes of classifying parts within the inventory,
the building instructions do not matter.

I understand and have participated in the debate about how to best represent
what came in the box or bag, but saying that BrickLink bases inventories on the
parts list only and that inventories are not based on the building instructions
at all is spreading misinformation.

I disagree. The building instructions are not used to determine whether a part
is in the Extras sections or the Regular section. The parts list is used for
this determination. The building instructions do not matter.

Where the building instructions do matter is in the determination of a
"complete" set. Unfortunately, since the fairly recent romp through the inventories,
Bricklink is no longer a reference point for this information. It is now up to
each individual seller to verify their own complete set listing against the building
instructions. It takes about thirty seconds to amass thousands of listings for
used, complete sets with the remarks that they do not include the "extras." What
sellers almost always mean by "extras" is "the parts listed in the Extras section
of the inventory."

The admins know this, but the official response is, well, you know, it says at
the bottom of the page the inventory is just a guide, so, you know, let's
just pretend that our actions have no consequences and make with the change requests.

it does show 3 Items are used but only 2 are actually used in the set. At first
I would think the 3rd piece would be considered an extra part, but since all
three are listed in step 101 the last Instruction step. The Inventory should
remain unchanged.

Bricklink set inventories are not based on the building instructions at all.

The printed parts list is the only thing that matters. It is a widespread misunderstanding
that the regular section of the inventory lists the parts needed to complete
the set according to the instructions.

All three are listed. But only two were used. There is no place for the third
one.

Thank You for Your Answer. I have read it, but it was not plausible to me. But
now it is clear. It listet all the parts from Both Sets. So there are 31.

Thank You again.

1. There are different Inventory-List in the Internet. Was there really a Cable
inside the box? Light Gray Electric, Wire 12V / 4.5V with four 1-prong connectors,
96 Studs Long

2. At the alternative Items there are 31 Light Gray Train, Track 12V Conducting
Rail Curved
But must it nor be 15?

Thanks for the Answers

Is there anybody, who haves a picture of the Box Backside and Inside?

Hello,

I think the the answer for you 2nd question is on the note at the bottom of Inventory:

Regarding the curved conducting rails included in this set, the timeline for
inclusion in sets is believed to be as follows:

1980: 16 of part 3241b Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved without Cable
Connection Holes shown in the Regular Items section
1981: 16 of part 3241 Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved shown in the
Alternate Items section
1982: 15 of part 3241 Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved, 1 of part
3241c Train, Track 12V Conducting Rail Curved, interference-free and 1 of part
117983a Paper, Information Note, Special Suppressor Rail - 117983 shown in the
Alternate Items section

Thank You so much. That helps a lot! I am new here at the forum. I took my old
LEGO from the 80's from my Brother. And now I try to find out, what was in
the Set and what not.

Again. Thank You.

The most accurate inventory for this train and other vintage trains (and most
other vintage sets) is Bricklink.
Concerning the wire, see the discussion and the photos on the bottom of this

As others mentioned, probably extras. But you can always tear it down and start

Don't worry about it. This is a piece that normally has extras included,
but the extra parts can vary by production batch. For extra pieces, the Bricklink
inventory is a guide only and your contents may be different.

Yes, it is quite likely that some of the clear 3024 are extras and that they
have not yet been determined in BL's set inventory.

https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?id=167789#T=S&O={"iconly":0}

However, I had trouble doing so and could not provide images of the individual
medium legs myself. I wanted these separate legs inventoried so they can be added
to Studio 2.0 in the future. Thank you!

You could use Brick Seller. It's browser based so it should work with the
Safari browser on your iPad Pro.

You can find a link to it on the BrickLink Inventory Software links here: https://www.bricklink.com/links.asp?catID=9

Think of it in terms of sold-in-units-of. In other words, if you place a one
in the box when listing, shoppers are able to buy in units of one, i.e. 1, 2,
3, 4, 5 through to any amount you make available. If you place a two in the box,
shoppers are restricted to buying in units of two, i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10…

And so it goes with any other number place there.

The format is beneficial in several ways, which you’ll learn of, as you gain
experience at selling here. You'll find the tier pricing (to the right) no
doubt useful as well.

Hi!

24 cards
24 pieces for the watch

Thanks in advance

The only way is to upload an XML file. However, I've not had great experiences
with that and you still need to create the file.

For a set this old, unfortunately, a person just has to do the work. Are you
not wanting to open the sealed bags?

is it better to just wait until someone opens the sealed polybags to get accurate
quantities?

Depends on how long you want to wait. That set's been in the catalog uninventoried
for 18 years now . . .

The box does not have a parts list printed on it and AFAIK there are no instructions

I noticed there was a sealed one on eBay recently and I've been thinking
about spending the $100+ just to add an inventory to BrickLink. You could save
me that cost if you wanted to add the inventory. Just saying.

I have an open brick box but the polybags inside are all still sealed. The set
is currently without an inventory

Set No: 2184 Name: XL Bulk Bucket
*
2184-1 (Inv) XL Bulk Bucket
1000 Parts, 1997
Sets: Universal Building Set: Basic Set

There are nine bags of bricks and each one is different. I tried inventorying
the sealed bags but after one polybag I decided it was taking too much time.

I'm wondering if there are other options to inventory this such as submitting
a list of unique parts (but with quantities of one or estimated quantities) or
is it better to just wait until someone opens the sealed polybags to get accurate
quantities?

The box does not have a parts list printed on it and AFAIK there are no instructions

There is an uncorrected error in the inventory. The error stems from unwritten
(but rather commonsense) policy related to either the catalog or inventories.
What is the error and what is the unwritten policy?

First person to correctly reply wins. As usual, there will be no prize.

The flowers? [p=3742c01] since presumably the build and the instructions only
show the use of 3 of the 4 on the sprue, the remainder being an extra? I don't
think I have ever seen a set use all 4 of those on the sprue.

Grin, too early in the morning here, should have read properly. Nice photo by

Correct! And close enough to what I was looking for that I will count it right.

So the unwritten policy is that when figures are not clearly defined, then they
are not added to the catalog. This usually only happens for sets that lack instructions,
but has been an issue for other sets, too (like when a figure is included with
both male and female hair).

So for this set the male figure is shown both with red legs (while standing on
the shoulder of the giant) and blue legs (while seated in the amusement ride).
This set, being Freestyle, likely didn't include instructions. So the male
figure should not have been inventoried in the set. I only recently discovered
my error. Oops.

I probably approved that inventory myself, BTW, since I was an IA at the time.
What needs to happen here is that both figures should be removed from the inventory
and their constituent parts added to the inventory instead.

As a reward for getting it pretty much right (and it was a tough one), I will
release a truly rare item: a photograph of myself. This is the first time one
of these has ever appeared anywhere on BrickLink and you will be the first to
see it. It was taken within the last six months.

As promised, it is not a prize.

No, the part arriving in new sets disassembled is a more recent phenomenon.
As you can see from sets in 1998, this part came assembled:

Should show:

122 Parts
3 Minifigs

(They are present in the Set Inventory.)

Good catch. They are present, but for some reason they are listed in the "extras"
section and so are not being included in the regular inventory.

Error when submitting the inventory maybe?

Have you tried contacting Lego customer service? I am sure Lego knows what's

  Hey all,

Apologies if this has been asked before but I can not find a discussion for it
and it does not seem that bricklink provide this functionality.....yet at least
although I hope I am wrong. I assumed this would be under the inventories section
but I think this more for sellers to list all their inventory.

What I wanted to do and I believe it would be a really cool feature, is to create
a list of all the lego parts (technic mostly in my case) I own. This way I would
have a list of all the parts I have, then I could for example compare this to
a set I wanted to see if I have the required parts or not. It could also allow
me to do a generic search for sets I could complete, for example it could say
you need 10 parts for this set or 50 for this another one.

Hope I have missed this 'feature', if not - do you think it is a good
idea? Is it something that could/will be added?

Thanks

WOW … thanks for asking this question Nathan. And Thanks for the answers from
Sylvain and Thea. I was just wondering how I could do the same thing! I have
all my parts listed in an excel file. And I was wondering if there was an alternative.
This info is great. LU

At least three ways to do that:

1. Become a seller and keep your store closed.

2. Use BrickStock (or your own tools) and manage your inventory offline.

3. Use https://rebrickable.com/

Awesome thanks, rebrickable is what I needed thanks but it would be cool if it
could be built in to bricklink.

There is good cooperation between BrickLink and Rebrickable. At the bottom of
each BrickLink Set Inventory there is a link to the set at Rebrickable. This
lets you quickly see if you own the set already.
At Rebrickable you can use the Build this Set Feature to see what parts you have
and what parts you need to buy. Once you know what you need, you can use the
Buy Parts to get a list of BrickLink stores that have parts you need. Those
you need can be added directly to a BrickLink cart or you can export the parts
to a BrickLink wanted list.

I am Thea at both BrickLink and Rebrickable.

Thanks

Nathan

Set No: 7518 Name: Cool Room Catchers
*
7518-1 (Inv) Cool Room Catchers
111 Parts, 2 Gear, 2003
Sets: Clikits
here and I'm trying to verify and repair the inventory
and I have a question for someone who has done one of these. The inventory said
I would find a lot of undetermined pieces and once again I have been disappointed.
But I have found that several of the lots are mixed between the frosted and
polished versions. Should I say the set has 5 polished versions and 2 frosted
versions like someone carefully made it this way or should I say there are 7
polished ones with 7 frosted ones as an alternate?

I am talking to myself here, I know, but I'm talking with 18 months of experience
and much more Clikits knowledge. If I don't get around to getting a more
concrete answer from more sealed sets, I can at least answer one question more
definitively. After opening and inspecting sealed copies of almost every Clikits
set, I have never found a mixture of frosted and polished in the same color again.
Not once. So what I feared was going to be a normal slushy thing with Clikits,
I now believe is unique to this set.

Unfortunately, I cannot find that I made a record of the distribution I got the
first time. But when another 7518 is opened, I believe the inventory should
be changed to reflect exactly what is in that set rather than alternates.

Yes, without pictures such parts aren't accepted.

Will a screen shot of the instructions and or the decal set suffice?

No, such will be rejected.

Bummer, I got 4000 lots to update. XML code isn't the easiest thing to chop

I am alone in finding out today that a lot of work I did yesterday afternoon
(British time) was lost from my inventory? Luckily I remembered what colours
I had been adding so was able to replace the majority of items but it is very
frustrating to have to redo a lot of work for the second time. This is not the
first time I have noticed this happening. Currently my inventory is at 56, 500
approximately, I estimate I lost 500 individual additions. I will now start to
check my inventory total night and morning to try to pinpoint when and if it
happens again.

I think it stands for Match ID. The number and color correspond to different
but similar parts found in a set (that is, parts that are slightly different,
but function in the same way, like the tap with and without a hole - parts 4599a
and 4599b, respectively). If a set inventory shows these colored squares, scroll
down to the bottom of the inventory there will be an 'alternate items'
section that shows possible variants of those parts that might have been used
to make the set.

Hope this helps,

Steve

The issue here is that because you acquired the set used, there really is no
way to verify that those parts actually came with that set when
it was new, regardless of what was said about the set. So unless those parts
can be verified with an unopened set I don't think they should be
added to the inventory.

Thank you for the help.

So far this is what I have and is in line what you are saying:

- This container should contain 165 pieces (Pretty close to what is in it)
- Mostly if not all CA plastic (correct!)
- Puzzling the inventory together based on "what can be made with this set" info.

I believe I will get to the 165 pieces.... I will upload the inventory as soon
as completed.

PS: This is a picture of the canister.

Short of someone finding one that is still sealed, we may never know.

Basic Samsonite sets of this era usually included a generic instruction book
that had "ideas" but no part list or indication of the parts included. This set
would just have had mostly red and white bricks (1x2, 2x2 and 2x4), possibly
some trans-clear bricks, and some red windows and doors. It was introduced in
1962, when the bricks and windows would have been made out of cellulose acetate
plastic, but beginning in 1963 they may have been mixed with ABS parts. It would
not have had any wheels or wheel holders, as these were sold in a separate set.

This particular set was sold only through department store catalogs (like Sears).

Hi niklasgustaf,

you need to submit an inventory set request. See the bottom of the inventory
of 148. You also need to click on "Show Inv Item IDs" and find-out the Inv. Item
IDs for the existing parts in the inventory of 148 you want to remove/change:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=148-1

But this inventory will be rejected. If you click on "log of completed changes",
you can see all the changes made in the part on this set.
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=148-1&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1

First see this change in 2017

Then this from me which is recent:

If you're new to this, then I would not suggest parting out sets like that.
I did that when I first started, and it was a bad mistake because there were
so many variations I didn't know even existed. Such as the brackets and panels
with and without rounded corners. Or the three kinds of jumper plates. Or antennas
with rounded or flat tops. If you part out sets using the "part out" function
on bricklink, I would still take a very close look at what you're listing.

Just a friendly suggestion so you don't make the same mistake I did.

Tha Catalog should be used as guide.
Always verify the parts when uploading stock.

I am parting out a set that I have three of, but only one of the sets seems to
have the "extra" parts. I'm newer to selling and thus parting out sets like
this, but is this normal? Every other set have have parted out always has the
exact number of "extras" as Bricklink says it should have.

I have one here (not new!) containing only old grays and Peeron says so as well.

Don't say "all versions". There are a lot of versions and some of them came
out in the years following the first. I don't think there are old grays
in the one from 2007. The one that you have came with old grays, but likely
came with new grays too if it was a 2004 set.

Because this topic is for automatic messages created when you fill the “Inventory
Change Request” form (see link at the bottom of the inventory, e.g. https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChange.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=4032-1
).

How do I report possible error in a set inventory?

Ref: Aqua Raiders set 7774.

In the inventory list for the the following entries the inventory lists only
one per item. Yet the actual set and instructions shows the set requiring 2 per
item.

There should be:
2 sets of fins (2 fins per set)
2 head gear helmets
2 scuba tanks
2 visor scuba diver mask

They are considered the same (for now) if they have the same Design ID/Element

no issues.

I'm parting out set 70418, and I have the sticker 70418stk01. it appears
to be the same at the one shown except the one shown has 128984 in the corner.
Mine has 134071A in the corner. I looked at other stickers that had alternate
items for the north american sticker and the international sticker, and they
had different numbers by the copyright. (see 75106stk01a and 75106stk01b).

My question is do I have a "different" sticker than 704189stk01? According to
the naming conventions with the (60466/6273230) they would be the same. I'm
willing to upload a picture and submit a change report, but wanted to make sure
it needed to be done. If someone buys my sticker with the 134071A in the upper
corner are they going to be disappointed it doesn't have the 128984 in the
corner (though I sell so very few stickers).

thanks,
jed

30 minutes i'm trying to add a new minifig and can't do it.
I want to create a new one ans start in the reserve minifig and got the answer
"Item Not Found in Catalog "

I understand why people get discourage by adding stuff.

Instructions to add are done really in general and find nothing to help.

I'm giving up .

That's too bad. The catalog Add or Change pages are very specific out of
necessity. If you are trying to reserve an item, you are already to the inventory
section. All you need to do to add a new minifig is go to the Catalog Add or
Change tab and then click Add Item: -Minifig. Then, it gets much more complicated!
People here will answer questions so don't struggle with any one step too
long.

Good luck,
Jen

Thank you for the help. I did it but it look like the figurine that i created
was SH522 done in the past.

Good there is people who check the inventory closely.
Thank you

The minifigs in set 75948 do not appear to have been inventoried yet and according
to the catalogue page it is not pending - is there a problem with these?

I just ordered the set and reserved all the minifigs.

Great - it is a very good set (In our humble opinion, of course)

I didn't do them before because they are so specific. I have a growing Harry
Potter minifig collection, but I don't really need them at the Yule Ball.
But I'll probably just sell off the minifigs when I am done.

They are all in one set. Just no one has done it. Do you want me to?

Yes please, if you can - we are in the process of parting out several of them
